Orchid's Bottom Drawer (Complete)

Description
B at particledots_collab_box made it possible to post this piece. My hat if off to him!

B compressed this file to get it under the MJ buffer. This is 4:09, but was over 40MB originally. Being unable to get this compressed small enough to post with any quality audio, a piecemeal approach was demanded. I will leave the "uncompressed", part one, up and you can compare the two.

I am very upset with having to post inferior versions of this material due to buffering issues...

This is the most complex piece I have posted since "Double Daugbird."
Part One:
Three is repeated in various rhythmic settings. 6/8 then 3/4 and swinging very hard if you have ears for it. Lol. The phrasing in the bass is "New Jack". The keys are more strict in the time, so this "saunters," no shuffle! The percussion has "New York" compression to aid in this effort. See a tutorial on YouTube, because I can't explain it, but I know it when I hear it...
Loops were used for the percussion tracks, little penciling was done.
The guitar solo features attempts to divide the time in threes, moves around the true downbeat and converses with the horns at the same time. Notice triplets were avoided? All the guitars and horns were first takes no redoes, cause I was playing as I heard it...the keys are another story, I had to piece those together. All the accessories are unique, the "laugh" is a take on what should be well recognized by most longtime alternative listeners. Please post if you can identify what well known "laugher" is being parodied.
Harmony is Daug standard, lots of whole tones dissonance. The horn line lives in the second mode of the tonic.

The second and third sections are much more difficult harmonically. If you want to know specifics you can email me. I never quantize anything...the third section is a new harmonic idea for me, a similar setting in part three of "Rehab", but the harmony is moving "away, away, away" yet one doesn't notice because the lines repeat. This idea was first used on Daugbird, but without the root movement.
Section two harmonizes a melody with chords "without harmony". (Try and figure that one out my friends...)

Thanks again B! As I am thinking now, I will not create any new Orchid's to post. I have three more in various stages. It is unclear if I will post them here. This could be your last chance at real Daug Jazz. I hope you enjoy it and maybe have your ears tweeked...

Orchid's Bottom Drawer
This is Impressive ..the whole complex timing
with the bass and drums ..the keys ..its like
an expressionist piece ..yet its more progressive
just shows how talented you are ..while the theme
here and there sound 70s but the whole
arrangement gives you a modern feel ...a top
notch work ..kudos ..thnx alot for sharin !!!!
Daugrin said 73 days ago (September 14th, 2009)
Hello Feter
Thanks for listening. The first theme 70s? Maybe "Stuff" if you know what that is...if ya don't research! Great band, with C. Dupree at the wheel.
Modern feel-Orchid is not going to blush...

Listening to Bryn is my Habit
Nice to see you got the Gershwin from part two...
Bryn is my "shinning example" and probably the reason you have any Orchid's at all to listen too. I tried to make something to compliment his style, way crash and burn, Bryn's work is singular...

Sax well...
Our favorite Andy has an " Orchid" sketch on his board now. The buffering issue may prevent us from finishing the piece. The idea was a colab between Orchid and Andy. The piece Andy is listening to will be very difficult to finish. I guess we will have to see about that over time...
I can't use the sax plug-ins at all. Wayne Shorter is not available in this price range either...

Bottom Drawer/Top Shelf
Sorry to hear about buffering issues. But after all--this is a mini-epic in scope and size.

I enjoy listening to your posts multiple times while reading descriptions. First, because they stand up to repeated listenings. Second, because they're so unpredictable and multi-layered, you're not gonna get it all in one bite. Often I don't get but maybe 50% of what you're saying. But then I find, on repeated listenings, what at first appeared opaque becomes clearer. I start the hear the 'saunter" as opposed to shuffle, etc. Very cool.

You are making art. And because you push the boundaries, you create permission for others
to follow suit. Well done, sir!

BTW, loved "Stuff".. Cornell Dupree, Steve Gadd, Richard Tee, right? Used to see 'em live when I worked at The Bottom Line in NYC "middle-late 70's".

Thank You John
Appreciate you listening to my tunes, your comments are always spot on. Orchid's are experiments. If you want to learn aspects modern music, a lot of techniques are attempted, maybe some work. I don't know if this is art though.
There is some "boot draggin" goodness will pick me up at your house for certain...

It does sound
very complex the way you describe it, but I just go off the sounds being entertaining and these certainly were. Melodious and discordant in the extreme in parts, but very enjoyable and listenable and obvious that a lot of work has gone into this piece, regards M

Music theory
I hate to use the word "interesting" when commenting, but this is interesting in the sense that it is worth studying with interest. I would love to hear more of this kind of thing at MJ. Even if I didn't enjoy it (which I did) I would be impressed with what sounds like a huge effort. And thanks for the detailed description, another thing I would like to see more of.

I'm glad you enjoyed the ride.
I develop Orchid's to demonstrate specifics. The first one, "Orchid's Next Fling" was posted without insights and pimps and largely ignored. Three are available, and satisfying in the sense they are listenable and interesting, at least to me...maybe to you as well Lol.

Nice piece of
syncopated jazz. Enjoyed the big band sound in the background. I may have brought the brass up just a touch but it is a matter of taste I guess. Some crazy chords in there. Enjoyed it.

Hi Charles
Your mission was to have been to sing the melody synth line in part two. But, I couldn't get in touch with you. You and crazy chords...

Super creative
This is what I like in jazz, you know, something that takes me for a journey to interesting places. That's practically the defining characteristic of this tune. I love how it keeps making new colors, what with the syncopation and chromatics and stuff. Great stuff.

Thanks to Rocha for turning me on to this.

Sounds of the panty drawer.
Love the theme. I can see them dancing in my head. Like some Disney cartoon that Zappa/Daug did the sound track to. Really wild composition. Incredibly tasteful. I'm on my fourth listen to this. Never the same. Brilliantly constructed.

Yes, the Panty Drawer
A girl that keeps her buck knife in the panty drawer is always my favorite. I like this picture 'cos it appears the drawer is organized in the manner of a fine craftsman's tool box. What else would Orchid do?
Thanks for the encouragement Steve, I appreciate you stopping by...

Excellent post Daug
definitely swinging and sauntering not shuffling. Reminds me a bit of some of Ornette's Prime Time work and the Stuff reference is a good one too. I used to see those guys at Mikell's back when. Pleawse continue to post - a good head cleaner like this is what I need from time to time. Really liked the free guitar playing too.

Hello Bud!
Nice to see you here. Prime Time and Stuff, nice touch stones for this, part one for sure. Part two and three are a ways off that mark, more like "thoughtful things".
I appreciate your listening. Nice to get noticed for soloing cool against this groove-no cliches?
