Description
PLAY THIS LOUD!

And now for something completely confusing... so, despite the fact that the song is called Tiny Man Inside, it is not a collaborative effort by my virtual band Tiny Man Inside. This is a solo piece. Are you confused yet?

I guess this song is what happens when your favorite playlist includes System of a Down, Beck, Tom Waits, Static X, Tool, and the Beatles. Believe it or not, the Beatles song "Glass Onion" was my biggest influence when writing this...

The entire concept of the song came from personal reflections on living at "the Fan Club" in Ithaca, NY in 1997. The line "spray paint your grass" served as the nexus for the idea. I'll leave it at that.

I used two different homebuilt guitar amps to record the guitar parts in this song - the rhythm guitars were recorded through my TMI Atom Smasher and the lead guitar parts were recorded through a new prototype preamp that is currently mated with a 2W PP 6SN7 poweramp based on the AX84 October Studio design. This new prototype is still a work in progress and is likely to sound much different than what is currently presented here.

Here is a picture of the TMI Atom Smasher, which I finished about a year and a half ago. This is the first recording using this amp, and I would very much like to re-record all of the previous Tiny Man Inside tracks with this amp, as I consider it to be the closest thing to a signature sound that I've found.

Lyrics
Tiny Man Inside
Feeding You the Lies
Read Between the Lines
Tiny Man Inside

I’ll mop your dog and massage your floor
Burn up your britches and kick down your door
I’ll kick and scream, ‘til the light turns black
Frame you for murder, then I’ll take it back

Tiny Man Inside
Feeding you the lies
Read between the lines
Tiny Man Inside

I’ll mow your ceiling, spray paint your grass
Recite some Shakespeare then I’ll kick your ass
I’ll drink your gouda, and make you whine
Take out your daughter, bring her home on time

Tiny Man Inside feasting on your precious thoughts you cannot hide from the Tiny Man Inside

I’ll smash your ego, get inside your head
Tiny Man Inside, making you see red
I’ll rob your bank, then I’ll solve the crime
Keep smashing atoms ‘til the end of time

Tiny Man Inside
Feeding you the lies
Read between the lines
Tiny Man Inside

Tiny Man Inside feasting on your precious thoughts you cannot hide from the Tiny Man Inside

"The man that hath no music in himself,
Nor is not mov'd with concord of sweet sounds,
Is fit for treasons, stratagems, and spoils."

Yeah, LOUD is good for this. Really great to hear your work here. All too few and far between. Love the guitar work and the sound. I didn't know you sing also. Great job! I enjoyed the quote also. Is that yours?

The quote
Thanks for the kind words Reggie. The quote at the end is from Shakespeare's Merchant of Venice, it has always resonated with me as a wonderful descriptor of those who find no joy in music.

Not my genre, but admire the wit and the skill of this piece. I appreciate that even though this rocks hard, I still can understand every word you say.

Great tone from that amp
I'm amazed at what people do with 5 watts these days. Cool song too - killer riffs and drive.

addictive!
Those drums certainly rock hard, love that double kick! Guitar tones totally rock, of course. All amp overdrive, right? Pure awesomeness! Glass Onion? You're right, that's hard to believe. hmmm maybe lyrically.

amp overdrive
Yes, 100% tube overdrive. I used Masterworks Leveler to add a touch of compression on the rhythm guitars, but that was the only effect.

Glass Onion was my main influence lyrically, but I even poached a few musical ideas, just distorted them a bit ;).

Nice!
Came to listen 'cause I wanted to know what that bad ass looking amp sounded like. That's only 5 watts? Sounds like waaaay more!
MasonAtom said 64 days ago (September 22nd, 2009)
5 Watts
You'd probably be surprised at how loud 5 Watts can get. Volume does not scale linearly with output power from the anode of the power tubes. So actually a 5W amp is half as loud as a 50W amp when cranked. Depending on how you design the circuit, you can get a BIG sound out of less power. Makes my life a whole lot simpler for recording at home.

Killer tone
sounds like the Randall that Dimebag Darrel uses with Pantera. U sure that Pantera isnt an influence on your music? Really has a Pantera vibe to it. Sounds great. Love it. Not much Hard Rock on here. Great Job!!
MasonAtom said 64 days ago (September 22nd, 2009)
Pantera
I certainly listened to A LOT of Pantera when I was growing up. Obviously DD was a major influence on my playing, especially his use of pinch harmonics, which I like to showcase very much. I haven't actively listened to that band in a long time though.

YES YES YES
Those amps sound really nice. You need to start full scale production on those ASAP. Everybody is scrambling to get a piece of the small watt tube amp market. Really, really nice work. I can tell it's a labor of love. Seriously, maybe you don't want to sell your amps, but now is a good time to do it if you are so inclined to do so. Orange has the Tiny Terror, Vox just cam out with the Night Train, Marshall just came out with the Class5, Fender has the Blues Junior, okay I'm sure you know about those already so I won't bore you!! Anyway, once again, sweet stuff! Keep on making those amps!

amps
Thanks for the kind words. I'm well aware of all the amps you mention, believe me. I keep an eye on what's available and have been trying to test out as many different commercial amps as possible these days. There is a ton of really killer stuff being made now, the options are so much more plentiful than when I was coming up as guitar player in the early 90s.

I'm working hard on several different designs and builds right now, including some very low power stuff - like 250 to 500 milliwatts or thereabouts, using some different vacuum tubes that not common in any commercial designs. Honestly you'd be surprised how loud even 1/4 of a watt can be when cranked.

I'm not sure if I'll ever get to the point where I do full scale production but if there is enough interest I may start doing custom builds. I still have A LOT of things that I want to improve upon - increase my build quality, learn more about the cosmetic aspect, learn a lot more about the theory so I can improve the sound and reliability, etc, etc...

I'll keep everyone here posted on my progress. This is the type of thing where I'm always going to be learning and hopefully progressing. I view this as likely to become a lifelong process.

Amps
Cool! I commend you on your quest for continual improvement! Keep us posted if you get any prototypes of those 250/500 milliwatt designs.

Do you have a background in electronics or is this something that you've been teaching yourself. Any books you could recommend for somebody new starting in electronics? I'm interested myself in building analog stomp boxes.

yeah
glass onion is so brilliant. "Fixing a hole in the ocean / tryin' to make a dovetail joint, yeah!" has got to be one of my favorite lines in rock history.

Thanks for the kind words regarding the amp. I'm really pleased with how things are progressing. It really means a lot to me when one of my favorite guitarists on the site complements my sound.

GEEZ - this is incredible! this is you singing? (guess so, that's what you said - lol) - you've got some vocal chops there! i've been following the story of your amp, so it's great to hear this. really impressive work - sorry i'm so late to get here! thanks!

haha
That's a new one! I've never been accused of having vocal chops before...

I'd say that the vocals are more a product of having the freedom of doing 40 or 50 takes, rather than a reflection of any real skill on my part. You got to hear the 2 or 3 takes that were actually in tune. Even a blind squirrel finds a nut sometimes...

Wicked
Good driving tune with some killer tones. Must be awesome to paly through your own amps. Sort of like catching a fish with a fly you tied, only must more painstaking I would guess.

Great sounds!
