Description
Here's another one that's been in the works for a while. I wrote the lyrics late last year, but never did anything with them. I stumbled across them last week and they screamed "I'M READY!!!" So, here we are...

This one has a heavy, droning sound, which I hadn't planned on, but ended up feeling perfect for the tenor of the tune. There are, I think, 10 guitar tracks and a bass track that basically drones the bottom note of the chord through most of the song. And there are plenty of vocal harmonies woven in here and there.

And after a nice, shiny popish tune for my last post I figured it was time for something moody.

So, here you go!

Enjoy!

Lyrics
Brave New World
©2009 Joseph Gurner

I used to be a beggar
But I’m not yet a king
Time swept past me like a tide
And left me on this shore

Where I’m going. Where I’ve been
It’s much too soon to tell
I’ll just keep going down this road
Until I freach the end

The past has lost it hold on me
and I’ve laid my burdens down
I’m no longer on my knees
tears falling on the ground

It’s a Brave New World we’re moving toward
A place we’ve never been
We’ve gone too far. We can’t turn back
We’re moving on --

To This Brave New World

I used to be a blind man
But I can’t yet see
Phantom chains held me down
While I longed to be free

The past has lost it hold on me
and I’ve laid my burdens down
I’m no longer on my knees
tears falling on the ground

It’s a Brave New World we’re moving toward
A place we’ve never been
We’ve gone too far. We can’t turn back
We’re moving on --

To This Brave New World

Nice one Joe - moody works for me
Shades of Neil Young and Crazyhorse at the start, but much more sophisticated harmony work as the tune progresses. I'd probably have dropped the double timed hihat in some places in the first half for added effect, but not a big issue at all.

Good words, and your vocal has an extra confidence compared to a year or so ago.

One of your best posts for sure.

Good to see you back!
Hope you enjoyed your European walkabout.

I had originally thought this would go in a more acoustic direction. Boy was I wrong. But I like where it ended up.

I definitely could have done some more work with the drums. The more I listen, the more I notice the hihat and some other things that could be taken away and added. I actually used some drum loops I haven't used before, so I'm still kind of experimenting.

The main vocals were actually a "one shot" thing this time. I've gotten away from doing that and picking and choosing the best bits from multiple takes, but I liked the feeling I had after I recorded them the first time, so I just stayed with it. You've always been a big cheerleader for me and my vocals and I really appreciate it.

Glad you liked it, Neil.

Thanks a lot for listening
This was definitely one I enjoyed doing and getting out there for everyone. Kind of cathartic.

Thanks, always, for your support Feter!

Brave New World
Like the slow durge-like guitar feel of this song. Like the vox a lot. I think the drums need to have a heavier feel. Maybe a slower high hat that is looser with more bottom end on the snare and kick too. Sounds good as it is but that is what my ear said. I am a perpetual tweaker though, lol. Very good song, enjoyed it!!

also
upon listening again. I do like the sycopated ride cymbal beat toward the end though. I think accent points with a vibraphone would be cool in there too. There is a nice vibraphone in garageband btw.

To tweak or not to tweak...
I know what you mean about being a perpetual tweaker. Sometimes I just have to say "That's it" and go ahead and post a tune anyway. The drums were the last thing I did on this and they ended up with a completely different sound than I had started with. They were actually much lighter than this. The hihat does get to be a bit much, but maybe at some point in the future I'll go back and tweak some more.

I've actually used the vibraphone in GB a good bit. It is very good, but I'd not thought about it on this one. Maybe I'll give it a try at some point.

Thanks for taking the time to listen and comment. It's much appreciated.

shoegazer
somewhat.

I like the feel and approach to this Joseph.

great mood and a wall of guitars come off heavy and thick which adds to the whole vibe of the lyrics.

But I wasn't wearing shoes...
So does "toegazer" count?

Definitely some heavy effects going on here. One of the reasons I used so many guitar tracks was to get just the right mix of guitar mud for the background. It's pretty close to what I was hearing in my head.

Thanks for listening Vic!

There's a...
...sadness to this that's got a sense of reluctant acceptance. The music fits the lyrics perfectly. Your Paul is quite nice...
