Description
I wrote this song back in 08 and i could just never get it right. i posted a crap version last year and since then i've revisited it now and again but was always frustrated by it. Until over the weekend I had a spare 10 minutes and I by chance opened it up and for whatever reason it came together. I like this song so much and to have it done to the point where i can listen to it in my truck and sing along and like it is like christmas and my birthday in one.

Lyrics
2 o'clock in the morning
in the kitchen drinking coffee
waiting for the phone to ring
for your key to turn in the lock
i called up your sister
to ask her had she seen you
she said did i know the time
and i'm not my sister's keeper

why you gotta be the kind of girl that's cutting those eyes the minute she arrives?
why you gotta be the kind of girl that says that she's tired and he offered you a ride so?
why you gotta be the kind of girl that walks to his truck with her shoes in her hand and
why do I gotta be the guy sitting at the bar wondering where you are?

i'd call up your momma
if i could stand to talk to her
instead i'll light a cigarette
and think of ways to say goodbye
i'll fall asleep watching sports zone
i won't hear you come home
when I wake up you'll be asleep by my side

chorus

all those italian girls in their brother's hot cars in high school, i should have taken up with one of them instead of you

Compare/Contrast
I'll have to take a little more time to make an official decision. I like the even more laid back vocal in the verses, but I miss the punch the chorus provided. It's a hell of a song any way you slice it, though. Didn't Paddy take a crack at this, too? I've always admired the reality of your lyrics. The line "She said did I know the time and I'm not my sister's keeper" Is so subtle but so vivid.

i used to hate those essays
in 5th grade i was supposed to write a paper comparing and contrasting the best and worst days of my life. thus far. for a mayberry 5th grader. not like we were in somalia or anything. well the worst day was when i was inducted in the child army, and the best day was when..anyway i thought it would be killer witty to write how my worst day was also my best day because i learned from it, right? Like don't eat barbecue and then go on the rollercoaster. I got an F.

like the bass line, and the background vocals esp.
the raymond carveresque storyline is compelling too.

Raymond Carver
man I was such a huge raymond carver fan and then i read the manuscript of "beginners" and saw how his editor (gordon lish) had really been responsible for the "ray carver style"...so I guess as a tag team they are still great but it dampened my enthusiasm a bit. if you like carver you should check out Larry Brown, a more southern fried version of Carver. He has a collection of short stories called "Big Bad Love" that I highly recommend.

oh and glad you liked the tune!

Nailed it...
... man you got it together at last. It was always gonna happen, just took time. I remember how you hated your original "sitting at the bar wondering where you are" and liked my take. Well you absolutely nailed that line here. The new backing vox are top notch and add to the otherwise sparse arrangement.
Nice work dude. Now I'm gonna have to go back to "Hometown" damnit!

Ain't it just that way sometimes? Glad this finally saw the light of day. I like it. Really dig the lyrics.

Don't know if the "country-western" genre fits though.

Be well friend!

Really enjoyed this track
Very focused lyrical perspective--great voice (and not just the vocal). At first I thought the mix wasn't bright enough but by the end of the song I was "getting" the overall sound, and I think it works nicely with the story. This is a good one--thanks for posting.

I think you
save the best for last with the comment about the Italian girls - that one hits close to home!
Bob6stringer said 2872 days ago (November 9th, 2009)
What is it about those Bellas?
I really like the lyrics and your vocal here. The mix is fine, although I'd try to "un-perfect" the the drums a little more if it were mine. But the song is killer. On a bad day, I completely relate to the last line - except in reverse: I married one of those Italian girls and she runs hotter than my old Fiat Spyder did until I installed new muffler hangers to keep the tuned ANSI exhaust from rusting off (the car, not the wife -- YET.

Nice song Craig
Great lyrics and the vocal is working good, I do think the vox needs to come up in the mix a bit. Usually in a country song the vocal and lyrics are prime, and should be right up front an in your face.

I'd love to have your tracks and do a remix on this, and maybe add a little Pedal Steel to it. It's a killer song Craig, that just needs a little tweaking to bring everything you've done here into better focus.

Love it my friend, keep at it, I like the direction you'r going in.

"you'll be asleep by my side"
Love that spot particularly, the way your vox falls off with a sort of lust in recollection.

yep.

I think the overall levels seemed low? Great C&W song.
