Never Say Goodbye - Bond Challenge

Description
Finally!

I've stopped tinkering. The uploads are up and going. It's almost as if someone, some mysterious person or persons unknown stooped a villianous plan to keep the James Bond tunes in the dark. Are Simon and Miguel REALLY Sean Connery working behind the scenes to save the day?

The world may never know...

As fort he tune, I had fun with it. As far as I can tell, there are only about three Bond themes that have been sung my men - McCartney, Duran Duran and Aha. I'm not completely up to snuff on my Bond stuff so there may be more. Anyway, it was kind of a cvhallenge coming up with lyrics that, well, um, didn't sound strange being sung by a guy, but I think I did. I'm not a huge James Bond fan. I've seen al the Connery and Moore movies and the new one. But I've always been interested in the darker side of Bond, kind of touched on in the new ones. I mean, come on, he's a pretty messed up dude.

Anyway, it was neat working on this. Musically, it was fun skirting around copyrighted riffs and such. Plus, it's got a lot of time signature changes in it, which I've never really done before.

So, sit back with your vodka martini (shaken, not stirred) and your favorite euphamistically named lady and enjoy.

Never Say Goodbye
(2nd lyrics)
©2009 Joseph Gurner

You never say goodbye
when you’re needed
Always ready
to be a hero

Just a man
on his own
with the world
on his shoulder

Never let go
Never give in
Queen and country
Always work to be done

Never look back
Never fall
Never feel
the weight of it all

When all is lost you
Never say goodbye

Just a man
with no fear on his face
Feel him stare
with mirrors in his eyes

Moving on
to all his tomorrows
and putting yesterday
aside

Never give up
Never fall
Never feel
the weight of it all

When all is lost you
Never say goodbye

Just a man
alone in the darkness
Just a man
who’s giving it his all

Lonliness
follows like a shadow
never quinched by
desire
Never look back
Never fall
Never feel
the weight of it all

When all is lost you
Never say goodbye

You never say goodbye
when you’re needed
Always ready
to be a hero

Never give up
Never fall
Never feel
the weight of it all

When all is lost you
Never say goodbye

Love the song Art... Absolutely great!!!

Wow... The piano and vocals are stunningly great! Awesome job! Love the lyrics!

I also love how in the middle where it reads "Never let go" you took on a up/down sort of secret agent feel to it... Very cool.

Excellent work Joseph! Excellent!

Simpson... Homer Simpson...
When I saw that artwork, I just couldn't resist.

Part of the fun of this challenge was getting the feel of the whole "James Bond sound" without actually ripping off any of the themes. Plus, as I mentioned above, trying not to make the lyrics seem weird when sung by a guy. :)

Thanks for listening and glad you enjoyed it.

Bond theme stew
Live and Let Die (the Wings version, not the GnR version) along with Nobody Does It Better (The Spy Who Loved Me) are probably my favorite Bond themes (sorry Duran Duran and Aha.) So going into this, I kind of had the idea of what it would sound like if those two songs got together and had a baby.

This was it.

Glad you enjoyed it.

Thanks Feter!
The orchestration for this was a blast. And it was actually the first part of the piece I came up with. The lyrics were the very last thing and they kept changing every time I recorded.

As always, I appreciate your support!

Smooooooth
Very cool entry, the various time changes make this sound epic and grand. It reminds me of the stylistic smoothness of Roger Moore at his sly best, with the naked women in vivid technicolor drifting across the scene in teasing slo-mo.

The contrast between the darker, somber lyrics and the smooth, richly orchestrated music puts a real tension in play that marks a real Bond theme. Mission accomplished, Joseph - well done!

Composing
a ballad for a male singer is no easy task and you succeeded beautifully. I really like the lyrics, too.

You know,
I think that this is an actually good (professional) enough piece of songwriting to be actually used as a bond theme. Masterful and very, very impressive.
Cheers

Never Say Goodbye
That should be a Bond title. Is it? I like this a lot, would be great to hear with a real orchestra, because the songwriting is so high quality.

Intimate and Epic
...a tricky move to pull off successfully, but you did it and made it sound tailormade to the Bond franchise. I love how the lyrics make the extraordinarily rare peek into Bond's world from his own inner world, and how difficult it might be for Bond the man to live the life as Bond the spy. The gentle piano carries this very well, with the surges of orchestration reminding us that Bond does this 'for Queen and country', not for personal glory.

Very, very thoughtful entry, and beautifully done.

Joe,
I went through the same feelings as far as the guy Bond theme too. You handle it well here. I especially like the way it moves to the "B" part. I almost could hear McCartney doing this.
Very nice,
Stephen
