Description
For the Space Race 2009 Challenge

My place in space is the human artifact that is farther away from the Earth than anything else yet.

Except for the voices, all sounds were done using the Crystal Synth plugin.

"As the Secretary General of the United Nations, an organization of the 147 member states who represent almost all of the human inhabitants of the planet Earth, I send greetings on behalf of the people of our planet. We step out of our solar system into the universe seeking only peace and friendship, to teach if we are called upon, to be taught if we are fortunate. We know full well that our planet and all its inhabitants are but a small part of this immense universe that surrounds us and it is with humility and hope that we take this step."

For some reason....
...this sounds to me like it should be a "lost track" from soundtrack to the trippy David Bowie version of The Man Who Fell to Earth.

Cool, cool stuff.

Very subtle Bill
and thought provoking, I like the quietness of this, which is more like space than most of the "Space Ambient" pieces I've heard.

I have to wonder, not if, but when will that disk be listened to, and by whom. I'm sure I'll never know. but someone will, someday.

Excellent piece Bill, Kudos,

Ed

i agree
with Joseph, this would be a lost track from the Man Who Fell To Earth. make sure you have your intergalatic passport ready upon arrival. :-)

Has a 50s Sci Fi feel to it
Slowly unfolds, simplicity works really well as each sound can be appreciated as it reveals itself and morphs. Your restraint here is so powerful - not sure I could do it!!

Very cool and spacious.

Cheers,
Doug

This is ground control
a very nice piece you've put together here.

I'm watching over my shoulder for the aliens.

Cheers

nicely done
meticulously pieced together. Patience is a virtue you hold. That sample sounds great in there!

V'ger meets close encounters
A cool trip Bill. As Ed said, the quiet is appropriate, but the rest is cool, too ;-)

Hi SmokeyVW.....
This is a great atmospheric space piece. I love the use you have made of all the different sounds, it all adds together into a great listening experience.

Take care.

Out there
... in the sheer emptiness of the vast stretches of space where our lonely artifact drift. Out there in a space measured by numbers too big to comprehend, where every concept becomes abstract..... our little golden disk floats on, pictures and sounds carrying what we might hopefully become someday.

Beautiful piece, Bill. To not be afraid of the quiet is a rare skill. Nice work.

Crystal
Yes, a good synth to do something like this. I like especially the echoing motif. Real nice.

Veejer!
I remember Voyager taking off, and hearing about the recording onboard, and thinking it was a cool idea... then later wondering how the heck anything that found it would figure out how to play/listen/understand the messages. Would it be just cricket-chirps and whale-song to them? Would they even have ears? It really got me thinking as a kid.

Nice tribute, and gave me flashbacks thinking about all this again. Excellent eerie synth voice choices.. I lost Crystal in the upgrade to the new machine, need to download it again. I hear a thinly-veiled reference to the close-encounters motif.

Drakonis

I'm hearing the music of the spheres and the echo of the Big Bang... Impressive the way you assembled those diverse sounds around the theme and made it work.

Eclectic, at best. I learned some music theory at school, and read a ton about it since. I've listened to lots of music over the years. I once played guitar in an actual garage band and actually got paid to play! Once. Although live performance is an... [see more]
