Fools Forever in the Dark

Description
I couldn't get into the right creative frame of mind for a Bond tune so I'm posting this one instead, which is I guess quite the opposite - a country-tinged indie rock ballad kind of thing. I REALLY wanted an authentic Pedal Steel part over this, but I don't know anyone who plays one, so I opted for some hacked up samples, supplemented a little by my own slide licks so they hook up okay. The result is that some of the 'pedal steel' parts are a little rough and disjointed - so let's inagine that they were played by a rusty old timer or a new beginner :)
If anyone out there plays Pedal Steel, please let me know if you're interested in doing a collab or two. I really love that sound.

Lyrics
when i'm away from you
your last words are on my mind
your face is the only thing
i see when i close my eyes

and i wonder what you're doing now
alone in your bedroom
i wonder if you're sad like me
and if you're thinking of me too

so say you'll take me
it's been a long time for you and me to be apart
and i will come back
so we can be together fools forever in the dark

the mountain is singing back
the songs that i'm playing for you
but mountains don't harmonize
the chorus like you used to do

so i'll play this song alone
the only one singing is me
and when we are back as one
we'll sing it the way it should be

Maybe if bond were a redneck this would be his theme song. Redneck James Bond. Now that's a movie I'd like to see. Thanks for the comment!

Sparklehorse...
... man this reminds me of Mark Linkous' first outing as Sparklehorse - my all time favourite album "vivadixiesubmarinetransmissionplot". Great atmosphere. wonderfully bleached out vocal and gorgeous slide.

Well the
sampled steel sounds real to me... Excellent... vocals have that slight detached feel which is very cool. Nicely done!

i guess it turned out okay, but i think a real steel player would listen and think 'what the hell?' I think there's a few licks that are poorly edited together.. regardless, i'm happy you like it and thanks for the feedback!

You always seem to deliver the goods
no matter what you post Ridd.

Love the desperate moodiness of this. "Pedal Steel" parts may not be perfect, but they work well here.

Enjoyed!

Be well!

Listening to this
I imagined myself driving through the desert, among tall cactus or is it cacti. There's some one in the back seat strumming a guitar and the vocal is coming through the old am radio, in other words this put me in a nice contemplative mood. Nice production, nice work.

Brilliant
Absolutely love this, man. It has that indie feel with half a cup of Nashville.

You know, the "hacked up" samples you were talking about sound better than an actual Pedal Steel part. They give it a quirky, planned choppiness that sounds amazing.

If you hadn't mentioned that the steel guitar was sampled I wouldn't have guessed..so top notch use of the samples.
Really like the chord structure.
You taken the 'country' feel and added some really nice touches.
Great stuff

love the pedal steel
sound fine to me. I love that instrument. I went and bought a loop package, but they have been hard to use and transpose, not to mention some of the samples have a lot of noise in them - these sound really good to me

the pedal steel sounds fantastic!
the overall sound reminds me a bit of Neil Young's country-rock efforts.

Absolutely fantastic.
Can't get enough of this sound. The steel sounds great for the genre. There are no Nashville pedal steel players on indie records. I'm with Kevin, the vocal sounds so good. Performance and effect. Love it.

pedaling
i'm with paddy on the sparklehorse sound, but also hear some neil young from harvest moon, one of my all time favorite neil young records. i've been loving your cowboy/country tinged stuff, hope it continues. vox are great btw, sound nice and lonely.

Lovely
Big bold sulky guitar sounds massive,
I love your voice and how it's pushed back like that creates a lovely wistful feel.
Lyrics are superb, Yeah a pedal steel would be magic
As it is it is a beauty.
Thanks for sharin

delicate singing
That "telephone" EQ-narrowing on the voice and the way you sing, makes this very delicate and tender sounding... and the main guitar strummed chords (and melody) are luscious. I'm not much of one for the country-slide style, but overall this is great music... again :-)

Slide sounds great
I know what you mean. I've always wanted to learn pedal steel. It is such an expressive instrument. I'm amazed at how well you did with just disjointed samples and your slide. It is very convincing and a really crucial part of this song. Really nicely done.
