Honeymoon on Mars - MJ Space Race 2009

Get Flash to see this player.

Description
This song was originally written and recorded by a trio I played with back in the 70s (with Don Wrege and Chris Lee). I recently arranged and rerecorded this. It seems appropriate for the space race 2009. The song is a whimsical sci-fi piece describing a honeymoon on the planet mars.

I played all of the parts, except the intro which I salvaged from the original 70s recording (Don playing some analog synths with some embellishment from me).

If you like this, please listen to "the Sphunx": http://www.macjams.com/song/54834
Chris wrote the lyrics to that one also. It was written around the same time as "Honeymoon" and performed
by the same trio. Hope you enjoy it.

Lyrics
Honeymoon on Mars (lyrics by Chris Lee)

Phobos they say is made of golden honey
Thus sticky sweet, to feed your cuddle bunny
and double moons make double tunes and slurpy spoons
and juicy joons and countless other groovy boons.

So pack your pillow we'll hop a rocket
I'll pack my plug, you tote your socket
It's good old tab A in good old slot B
for you and me... Eternally...

Honeymoon on Mars
Fly me to the stars

The red hot rhythms that you rumba to
are like some science fiction dream come true
Why you and me can boogaloo supreme
In oceans of absynthe whipped cream

And all the creatures of this peculiar planet
will not deplore it, censor it or ban it
if the maiden dance of the martian fire ants
should cause us both to wet our pants

Honeymoon on Mars
Fly me to the stars

Down those canals that folks most seldem use
doing things they seldom dare
All the ecstasy is real, luxuriating without care
its just too bad there isn't any air.

And if some sexy saucaline should spy us
maybe they will land and maybe try us
If they like us they may fly us far away
to where the sexy saucy saucer people play

Honeymoon on mars
Fly me to the stars

Honeymoon on mars
Fly me to the stars

Space music
I loved Passion Play. This was originally written around 1972 (maybe earlier...), just before Passion Play, but the same vintage and certainly subject to many of the same influences.

Funny about the vocal work. I played this remake to one of my original band members. He liked it, but said the vocals didn't quite have the youthful sound they did 30+ years ago. Some things get better with age, some don't...

Hah! Awesome effects...
...a little like the old "Outer Limits" series, only BETTER!

Very cool tuneage. DEFINITELY prog!!! Love it!

Be well friend!

Thanks.
I love the sound of those vintage analog synths in the intro. They were from the original recording. I added some shiny new digital filters and delays to punch them up a bit, but the coolness is from the original sounds.

Thanks

this is great, yeah!
Reminds me of the best of 70's music! And yet so fresh and NOW for me, too!

Thanks, Ramona
That is exactly what I was going for. I redid three songs from that trio. I uploaded this one, the Sphunx and I'll upload the third soon (Damballa). I'm glad you enjoy them. I had a great time putting my mid-life crisis energy into re-living this time of my youth. I did the sports car thing a few years ago, now its guitars and music!

Sexy saucer people
Lots of complexity hidden (well, not that well hidden) behind the whimsical nature of this tune. I think the lyrics are quite clever, and make good reading even if the great music was absent. Thanks for unEarthling this very cool piece and redoing it. Great addition to SRC.

Hi Steve......
This song is just brilliant and I only wihs that I could song along with it but my voice clears airport transit lounges!!

Wonderful lyrics and backing. Very fresh sounding but I hear the song's roots.

Take care.

Everyone can sing along with this one. After all, there isn't any air on Mars so don't be ashamed of clearing transit lounges on earth. On Mars you can sing to your heart's content without bothering your neighbors ;)

Smiling Moon
Red hot honeymoon going on here. Arrangement is built for space travel with seemless keys and guitars. Outstanding vocal harmonies Steve, I love your quirky guitar stylings as well, great tune!

Phobos, sweet nectar
Interplanetary honeymooning. My wife and I have been married for over 30 years now. Phobos is high on our list, just after Niagra Falls for our next 3rd and 4th honeymoon destinations.

As for the quirky harmonies and guitar. I try to play them straight, but they always come out quirky. There has to be a digital filter somewhere that can translate for me...

space-kink!
yes. this is weirdly delicious, like the B-52s merged with Robert Palmer. great singing, wonderfully twisted space-kink lyrics (that should be a new genre, sign me up.) When I book our next vacation, you want me to pick you up a couple tickets too? :-) wildly inventive stuff!

Honeymoon on Mars
starts off reminding me of the theme music to "Outer Limits" (oh, i see Mike said that already LOL) - anyway, love how the real song then starts, and off we go on a wild, fun ride. so glad you pulled this out of the archives - great tune - much fun for this challenge!

I appreciate it. I hate to attribute it to this, but I'm just old. I lived through the 60's and 70's music scene which is where I learned everything useful. Now i just use modern tools to make sound.
