Description
This is my other contribution to SpaceRace Challenge 2009. To one of the lonely places in our Solar System, the small Saturnian shepherd moon* Pandora, discovered in 1980.

12 tracks with the Yamaha, and one Zebra 2 track. The title is a nod to Eugene O'Neill.

Photo:

Faint ringlets abound in this view of Saturn's F and outer A rings. The F ring presents its familiar irregularities near the ring's outermost edge. At lower right can be seen faint ringlets within the Encke Gap. The oblong moon Pandora (52 miles across) appears to hover above the ring, overexposed in this photo (it's much smaller than it looks). This view looks toward the unilluminated side of the rings from about 1 degree above the ringplane. The image was taken in visible light with the Cassini spacecraft narrow-angle camera on March 4, 2008. The view was obtained at a distance of approximately 784,000 miles from Pandora.

Photo and Caption [altered]: http://photojournal.jpl.nasa.gov/catalog/PIA09877

* Shepherds are moons that orbit within or just beyond a planet's ring system. They have the effect of sculpting the rings: giving them sharp edges, and creating gaps between them.

Space ambient
becomes Ex_Silentio! You are really good at this (too)! I can even hear a bit of "shepherd" sounds in this, especially early on. Very effective ending too, from just after 6 minutes. Sweet.

Thanks for posting a second SRC-piece. Take care.

I cheated a bit. This had been in progress for awhile. Just fooling around with the keyboard. Another huge area of tech space to explore. When I saw that picture, which is, unfortunately, too small to appreciate the exquisite detail (the blown up version is incredible), I decided to try to finish it off before deadline. Glad you liked it.

Nice music Ex
Love the way that Yamaha sounds. I have an older SY99 that I can get similar sounds out of, but these are stellar. (pun intended

I love the way this grows and the different pieces blend and swirl around each other. Very cool my friend.

Hi Ed
Thanks very much for coming by. This is the first time I've committed Yamaha sounds to a recorded piece. An initial foray. It does way more than I'm able to get from it. It's huge, and the manual is not friendly. Well, thanks again.

Now this is another great tune
I would have thought that all of your creative juices were used up in your first entry but I can see that I was WAY wrong about that.

You really have left a ton of room: aural-space-wise and time-wise, for the development of your themes. The layering is restrained, the tensions held so that they can really be felt, then the sound slooowly morphs.

Masterful! I truly feel that I am far far away in a very alien place. You have nailed the atmosphere in this one. The almost distorted voice at 3:45 is like a call of loneliness and danger at the same time. And the synth voices at 6:00 - an outstanding choice. The perfect headphone music to listen to in the dark.

Only nit - I would not have cut off the voices at 6:29 but would have had the whole soundstage fade out as you did with everything else. But that's my taste, and regardless I think this piece will be a favourite for a long time to come. Dloading now....

Doug

Hi Doug
"I would have thought that all of your creative juices were used up in your first entry...." They were. Hahaha. But here it is anyway. I appreciate very much your detailed comments. I tried to convey loneliness, but without sadness. It's just a feeling I had about this photo, and I'm more of a rock 'n' roller than a capturer of moods (but Ex doesn't rock). I gave it a shot. Your nit is certainly valid, and I'm glad that you mentioned it. I'm sure that would have worked, as well ... to fade away, as though pulling away from the scene, a restoration of total silence. Seems appropriate. Thanks again.

Hi Duane........
You've really hit the mark with this piece. It's perfect and very topical. I wonder if your next entry? will be about the newly discovered outer ring?? Just a thought.

I love evolving Ambient. This piece evolves through very well crafted sections. The jigsaw of soundscapes have fitted together into a brilliant design.

What's 784000 miles between friends?? Pandora's out of the box now.

Take care.

Paul

Hi Paul
Yes, timely. I read about that discovery just after I posted. It's an amazing place, this universe. Next entry? Well, if I had your creative energy, I would be about ready to post, but since I am only me, it will be awhile. Thanks much. Always appreciate your input.

Pandora
What a lovely name for this small moon. You've certainly captured the mood here. Great choices of synth voices.

I had a look at the full sized photo. It is quite something. Such clarity, from such a distance.

Once again, your musical skill leaves me wondering why I bother. Much kudos for a beautiful piece.

The photo
I'm glad you took the time to look at the expanded view. I just stare at it, and it does something to me, very hard to describe. That's the effect that space has on me. It's not even deep space. It's in our own "little" neighborhood. Thanks for the nice words, dava. An honor.

Too bad Kubrick's
not around any more because he might have made a film just to this soundtrack. Very beautiful, delicate and spacious soundtrack.
Cheers,

just read about the outer ring as well
apropos. the music here is serene and thought-provoking. it then begins to grind its way through the rings of space, roiling up a vortex of dust, sometimes chaotic, sometimes patterned with beauty. thank you again for your contribution before and for the spacerace challenge.

sound vibrations. how did you accomplish such deep energy? breathtaking soundscape - deep and complex. from the smallest dynamic to the fullest of it's 13 layers this piece is rich beyond belief. i had no idea there would be room for growth and yet it kept growing gorgeously. perfect use of pan and fade. just a stellar tune. you've left me speechless and content to ponder pandora.

Shepherds
moons that folds space gas, particles. I imagine that gravity is what does that. How profound a thought, that a small dark rock imposes upon its neighboring entities.
Influences, Interconnectedness, Reciprocity. In Space..laws, immutable. You are a wonder. Beautiful. Thank you.

Gravity, yes
A deep comment Char. Gravity is an amazing thing. I have long been fascinated by it. But it is weak compared to the other three forces of Nature. It has the unique aspect of acting over very large distances. A kind comment. Thank you.
