Pulsar Encounter [Space Race Challenge 2009]

Description
The ship approaches the pulsar. An alien vessel is sighted on the long range scanner. Contact is made, data exchanged. The ship departs...

A tune in a day. Rather rushed therefore, but I wanted to get one in before the deadline. For this, I've used u-he's Zebralette synth exclusively. [A great synth, comes free with the Zebra 2.] There are 11 tracks.

Most likely needs a good remix, but I haven't had much time for music of late. Have a listen anyway, feed back is much appreciated, thanks.

Sci Fi movie soundtrack
is that would be perfect for. Like a new version of Space Odyssey or something. Very cool sound textures without getting too busy. Nice work

Thanks
Yes - a Sci Fi movie soundtrack! I wish...

I think it was all classical stuff in 2001 a S.O. Richard Strauss' "Thus Spake Zarathrustra" was used for the opening sequence. I don't recall any "electronica" therein, but then again, my memory is shot to hell.

Thanks again.

Lift Off!
I just knew we were in for some good sounds from you Dave and I'm not disappointed love the purring sound and the glassy sounding synth, which really does give that 'Outer-Space Frontier' sound. Good stuff as always, regards M

Thanks Mo
I spent about 10 hours on this yesterday, from scratch. Stiff neck, I ended up with! So it was a bit rushed. Glad you approve though!

Cheers.

Thank you.
No, not random! Many synth sounds just, well, clash with each other. I spend a lot of time tweaking and try to make sure that doesn't happen. Not too sure if I do it successfully, but I do try!

Thanks again.

Great one
But you always do things I like. Trippy stuff is what I love most as space tunes, this is a mix of it... Cheers man.

I use the Zebra 2 quite a lot, but really wanted to do something using just its little brother. I'm very impressed with the Zebralette. You can do a lot of morphing with it. And yes, it is good for space sounds!

Thanks again.

Sounds like I
have a little Alien singing in my ear through some of it.
Very, very atmospheric - yes, I could imagine this as a soundtrack too. Wonderful mix.
Cheers

Billion g whiz
You've managed to put the Zebralette to work for you. I haven't had much luck with it, but you have tapped it most effectively. The glide notes are choice. The 2:10 and after section is profound. The slow pulse comes to the front under the swirl. Very nice. Top mix (of course). Excellent contribution to the SRC. One of my favorite subjects, too.

Pulsars
Yes. I listened to some [research!] but the "pulsing" seemed rather too staccato for what I wanted. Artistic licence used liberally here I would say!

Thanks anyway. I think it turned out not too badly for a rush job. You should persevere with the Zebralette, by the way. I'm getting to like it more and more.

Nothing wrong with a little exchange of data
I always say. By the way, Alien to who ? Are we the ones this piece is about, or are we the Aliens ? Good questions all !

I like the feel of this and the "Pulse" is right there in your face as you approach.

Very creative Dave, The storyline is right there in the music, for the listening. I like what you've done, quickly or otherwise.

Very cool my friend,

E

Aliens
Ha! Yes. Which are which? My idea was that "we" encounter the aliens at the pulsar. It's all very scientific and not at all hostile. Which is the way it should be.

Thanks Eddy!

I appreciate feedback too
and there were lots of sounds here that I like just as much as feedback. Sorry - bad joke. Really though this is a cool piece and the sounds you've gotten out of the Zebra are really interesting.

Thanks Bud
I enjoyed the challenge of having a limited time all right, though my back and eyes are getting a bit too old to do this much! They complained, but did I listen?

Used the Zebralette btw, not the Zebra. It's like a little brother, but a well equipped one!

Cheers!

dark side of the pulse
pretty darn cool.

if pink floyd would of been more synth orientated, i think this would be close to what they may have done.

Nice comment
About the Floyd. But I'm not in the same league. I think they did a pretty good job at the synth stuff too, with the added bonus of analogue instruments. I can't do that I'm afraid!

Thanks anyway.

Thank you
I started with presets [as I usually do - lazy I know] but ended up tweaking them rather a lot. I like to do this - make new sounds. This particular synth is very tweakable!

Cheers.

Sounds wonderful
so far: I may be having trouble with the player so I have downloaded a copy to enjoy later (and I know I will). Rushed or not, Dave, it pulses! Sometimes that helps you keep focus on your intent (being rushed). Coming at a project with fresh ears can make you hear it differently in more ways than one, which could be good or bad.
Sorry, didn't mean to get unfocused here. I like that you credited your patient partner.

davajonah said 2755 days ago (October 12th, 2009)
Yes
You're quite correct. Sometimes a rush job turns out better. I'm guilty of over mixing sometimes. You can get really bogged down in it, and I find I often go back to an earlier mix. All good fun though.

I've been having some trouble with the player too, but thought it was my connection slowing down. Maybe it's an upgrade glitch!

Thanks for stopping by and the kind comments.

Nice entry
I like the build of this as well as the sounds you get out of that little wild "horse". At around 4 minutes it sounds a bit like coming from Vangelis album Spiral, or is it Heaven and Hell(?). Anyway, very cinematic and spacey. Enjoyed a lot and DL'd even before hitting the play button. A nice addition to my growing Space Race Collection. Thanks, and take care.

Hi Dave..........
I thought this was very good for a days work. You nailed the mood and sounds very well.

You can't beat the old Z-synths. I'm a fan of these synths myself and keep returning to them.

Take care.

Love those synth bells
or whatever they are. They add darkness and a harder character to the other swirly bits. The slow high pitched synth's entrance at 1:50 is so very delicate and mysterious. You've handled the slow way it slides into consciousness with great skill - certainly not a rush job!!!

I really like this one, how it slowly plays out its story. Another dload!

almost out of time.
the beginning of this gives hints at the beginning of "Time" from dark side of the moon, strangely. however, it then moves into its own world. the slow phase-shifting beat does feel like a pulsar spinning. a lot of sawtooth synths give this a sharp bite. very good work for a day, I cannot imagine whipping together a cohesive piece like this in a day. very impressive. thank you for rising to the challenge, never a disappointment.

Yes, it really was in a day. Not had much time to make music lately, boring money earning things to do.

I've been so impressed with the quality of the music that has been posted in this challenge. A fabulous cross-genre playlist. It's really an honour to have made a small contribution.

Thanks again. :-)

Now wouldn't it be just the coolest thing to actually get up close to a pulsar? [Shields set to max, of course.] As a child, I used to think I'd be doing stuff like that when I got older. Instead, I teach. Oh well...

I'm getting to really like it. It does make some really cool sounds and is easier to play with than it's bigger brother [or is it sister?]

Thanks Kass - very kind comments from you, yet again.
