Grandad and Waylon

Description
I've been wanting to write a song about waylon jennings pretty much ever since he died, but i didn't want to write a tribute kind of thing, more of a "how waylon related to my life" song, and the lyrics just never came to me. Until a week ago when i was tilling the garden, thinking about a trip home i was about to take and how i was going to have to go see my grandad in the VA, he was a huge influence in my life, just a big strapping son of a bitch and i hate visiting him now, he thinks he's 8 and he doesn't know who anybody is. if i had more guts i'd shoot him. but anyway i realized that waylon was the same kind of giant guy, the same presence in my life, and that i actually feel to this day that i knew him, which is i guess the highest praise you can give a singer/songwriter.

Lyrics
first time i heard you sing
i was sitting on my grandad's knee
you were tired of feeling ornery and mean
but you weren't apologizing
he said that there ain't country
not like web pierce and the grand opery
but i was thinking it hit pretty close to me
and i wasn't apologizing
no i ain't apologizing

hey waylon life surely kicked your ass
ended up stove up waiting for your turn to pass
your guitar was tuned
and your women were firm and willing
but there ain't a dream
that time won't get to killing

grandad's living in the VA
he don't know where he is
i don't know what to say
waylon died in 2002
web pierce well he's dead too
all the old boys that taught you how to live
someday will teach you to die
that's just the way it is
yeah all the old boys that taught you to live
will teach you to die that's just the way it is
they'll teach you to die that's just the way it is

reverb
thanks feter, glad you liked the story. always difficult to know how to treat the vocals in a traditional type tune, i was trying for that "singing cowboy" type dry sound

Just some good old boys
Nice slice of Americana, Tempie style. Really cool guitar solo-right up my alley-DIG IT

Entertaining as hell. If it means anything to you, I like you better than Waylon. I didn't even know he died in 2002.

that's the way it is
wow what a great song! the lyrics are utterly fantastic.
like the rootsy vibe and the signature tempie sounds on the guitar solo.
This is going into regular iPod rotation (along with most of your other songs).

that's a good point, hadn't really thought about it like that - don't know how well i'll be able to do it, but it's a good point. glad you like the song and glad you're a waylon fan. he's one of those guys that has just been around rock and roll since forever, most people don't know to what extent. he was and remains one of my music heroes.

Love it
There's a reality in the lyric (and delivery) that I think makes a lot of people uncomfortable. And that is a good sign. Guitar break is on the money and that organ sound is perfect. This song ends up being a wonderful tribute to 3 people and 1 place. Efficient.

Slight change of style...
... still Tempie but more thoughtful and gentle. Excellent execution and wonderfully tuneful. Love those guitar breaks all over the middle segment.

I love the vocal harmony in the chorus, there's a cool tone to your voice.

really like this
you managed to keep that upbeat fun tempie sound with a little deeper than usual lyrical content. great changes throughout. love the BG vox on this one. very cool when the electrics kick in and take over for a while too. first time i've heard the word 'ornery' in a song. congrats! great post.

thanks dude glad you liked it. i tried to keep it upbeat. life is what it is, you might as well swing a bit, even when the lyric is a downer.

Giants
This is one of my favorite Tempie Toons for several reasons. I guess the concept of the song was pretty major when you shared it with me months before any of your "new friends". Serious, I love the comparison between the old boys that taught you how to live. That authentic B3 sound is the cake beneath the icing. It really does something magical to this song of yours. I told you in a response to a barrage of personal emails how much I like your guitar sounds. The strumming sounds, the chunka chunka crunch and that colorful lead of yours are well orchestrated. I personally witnessed you laboring over this song so I have a greater appreciation for this song than less than one of most of your other "pals". You do the math.

Strong vocals on this and I really think your decision to keep the organ in the outro with your expressive vocals was a great idea.

I feel like I know you.
Firm and willing.

you're the (breaking) wind beneath my wings. and good idea to keep the organ in the outtro, especially since i had the axe poised.

grand ole tempie
I like it that you're acknowledging the influence but without aping country and doing your very tempie thing without apologizing.

I especially like the rumbling bass dynamism of the drums in the chorus, the bridge is fine, too. and the muted string/clock sound (if you see what I mean)

great lyrics as usual both in concept and details (the last lines)

country
for the longest time i tried to find my own sound. now that i've found it i sound like "tempie" no matter what i do. if i knew how to play pedal steel i'd have thrown some in. but you get what you get. glad you liked it!

Hell of a story Craig
Sorry about you're grandad, but sometimes, that's a part of life we have to deal with. But it's still hard to handle.

The fact you can relate these two one time strapping big men together and produce a song like this, say something very good about the lessons your grandad taught you.

This has an honesty to it my friend that makes it stand out. Great lyrics, sung with heart and integrity. Got that guitar going on in the break, and the whole song just works. Great job Craig,

Ed

the story
hey man thanks for the listen. i'm glad you liked it and glad it struck you as honest. it is a good story isn't it? the cool thing is that it's everybody's story, at least the sentiment. that in a way makes it easier to process.

Where to start on this great tune & story?
Big man-hug for the song, the lyrics, the delivery. Okay, we better break it up. I hear ya. Papau was right -- there ain't no country left in the country, at lest not coming out of Nashville (except when Brad Paisley shuts up and picks-up his guitar). However, I see a resurgence of guitar-based rock and I believe it's coming from Nashville. And I see hope for it all. Still, I miss Waylon's breed of country outlaws. But as I see it, Waylon and his early buddy, Buddy Holly, both straddled the country/rock tightrope.

My mother is on track to catch-up with your grandfather, time's a real bitch. Hope he's comfortable at any age, real or imagined, it's okay as long as he's not in pain.

Grandad - RIP
Well, one of my favorite Tempie toons has even greater significance.

Sorry for your loss man, but it seems to me like grandpa passed down some of his piss and vinegar to you. Maybe more than he actually had in the first place.

You consistently write some amazing stories, but this is one of my favorites.

RIP Grandad
