Stars On Her Eyes

Description
Going retro with Logic 9 amp sims. This is the first tie that i used Logics amp sims on all guitar tracks. Since it is a bit of a retro rock tune I chose vintage amps like tweeds and a pawnshop amp with a 8" speaker. They sound great but will take up some cpu power.

On the verse guitars I also split the chords in two between the two guitars one plays two lower notes and the other player two higher notes. not a big deal but it does give some better definition when you deal with overdrive.

Lyrics
Stars On Her Eyes

she buys every tabloid
at the newsstand (there's so much to read)
immersed in every page
black ink on her hands

she has stars written on her eyes
the star voices fill her ears
she has stars always on her mind

she reads between the lines
in black and white (and the day goes)
her friends are here in print
knows what is meant

she has stars written on her eyes
the star voices fill her ears
she has stars always on her mind

a lifetime of memories
outrageous stories (what's so wrong in believing)
bundled up and stored away
aging day by day (now i fade away)
this is her diary

she has stars written on her eyes
the star voices fill her ears
she has stars always on her mind

Thanks Feter
it's no big secret, turn down the guitars rather then trying to get the drums louder. But it does take some time balancing the whole thing.

A Fitting Tribute...
...to those sad individuals whose own lives are so boring that they have to live vicariously through the lives of celebrities.

At first I was thinking "there's no way to get that kind of sound definition with a virtual amp". Thanks for letting us in on your little secret of how you pull that off. *wink*

Cheers,
Jim

Hey
Scared the shit out of me at the intro. That's my little gripe.

Now the song. Your voice is in top form here along with cool Byrd-ish, Petty-ish, Badfinger-ish, Harrison.ish guitars.

stars and guitars
super cool illustration dude. guitars just sound fab all the way through. really a guitarist's tune. i like the black ink on her hands line. pretty soon that will be an antique observation. terrific solo, up and 100% pop and then back into the prog rock. as you know by now i love how you do that.

You hit that retro target dead center. Guitar work is great, and the amp sims chosen highlight the guitar lines in a way that resonates to those of us that grew up listening to 60's and 70's rock. Maybe the song could benefit from a bridge that underscores the sadness of a person that devotes that much time to celebrity gossip (I think the last verse is headed that way), but I think it is good as it is.

i think it is mostly in the chord structure. originally it started as acoustics, but switched over to the electrics and upped the bpm a little to give it a bit of the classic rock.

thnaks again for the listen!

Reading Gossip mags!
Dont we all know some people like this :)

The type of progression and spacing of the chords evokes feelings... so essential to some great rock songs.
Cool how you split the chords, maybe thats why the guitar is smooth and balanced.

Great stuff again Vic!

i wanted a lot of air mostly in the verse. i figured i could get a larger spread on the guitar sound by splitting the chords, just have to make sure the timing is dead on. a few notes are more defined then playing a full chord at times.

One of the great frustrations...
...of my year was seeing the new amp sims in Logic 9 and then reading that it wasn't supported for Power PCs/G5's.... Man... Although I hear that you CAN, maybe, run it on a G5, only... if something goes wrong...

All of which is to say that I'm listening to this and feeling a solid and satisfying envy... Sounds like you're having a lot of fun and are in guitar player heaven...

For all the tracks, every one is audible and clear, not all mushed together, with its own distinct sound....

Sounds great, Vic...

Ed
Vic Holman said 2801 days ago (October 24th, 2009)

this was totally done with the sim amps. i have used them on some other recent songs, usually one track. they are pretty cpu intensive though.

the rhythm guitars went through one they call pawnshop prize, i set the gain to full and it has a nice crunch. the lead was through a old tweed amp with the gain cranked and the amp reverb on, it is the same one that neil young uses. it really has that crazy horse lead sound in my opinion.

i know nutty isn't it. i split the chords so i could get a wider and defined stereo field that one guitar couldn't do. besides i wanted to hear how it would sound. the music i had done well before the space challenge. it did come close to being shelved since i had other songs in the works. but it bugs me after a bit to leave a unfinished piece, when the folder is glaring at me every time i turn the 'puter on.

There's Something
About a crisply produced guitar tune that, when it hits the sweet spot it hits right between the eyes. Of course, you and 'guitar sweet spots' are almost synonymous by now. Just love how this sounds from the first hit and the flawless balance of drums, bass and drums. Sometimes simple is the most elusive target to hit and you never miss. Ever. I can almost taste the clarity on my tongue.

Mmmmmmmm.
