The Last Goodbye

Description
A new song, partially inspired by Dean Wareham's book "Black Postcards" and the documentary film "Tell Me Do You Miss Me." It's about goodbyes and being brave enough to admit when you're done. I've had to do something similar lately, though thankfully not in respect of my music.
We all get older, we all get wiser and we all have to let go eventually.
I've played with some slide guitar here, though not particularly successfully - I couldn't find any slide loops that I liked so I bought a slide and had a go...
Obviously influenced by Luna and Galaxie 500 but a definite stylistic link to my songs "Stonehearted" and "Metropolitanne".
For your consideration.....

**NB** This is a new version of one posted earlier today (20th Oct 2009) which contained the wrong vocal tracks

A Bit Gloomy For You
But then a grey winter is on it's way. Not that I do not like it, I do, just an observation. Kind of Leonard Cohen meets english progresive new wave, Lightning Seeds, someone like that.

Gloomy...
... yeah but Dean's book is quite gloomy overall so I guess I caught the vibe! Glad you liked it man.

great tune dude
love that bassy lead line. the "bye bye bye" chorus with the little muted arpeggio is inspired. had this playing while i ate lunch standing in the kitchen and the mood was just right. aint it cool when you read something so impressive that it makes you want to write a song?

Always...
... happy when you like my stuff man. I gotta say I'm stealing "standing in the kitchen and the mood was just right" for the opening line of a song! The book that inspire this is just such a great view of the indie rock scene during the major upheavals of the late 90's it made me sad for all those old aspects of music; vinyl, gigs, fanzines. Stuff that seems to be incidental these days.
Thanks for your kind words fellow DVPer

Bass
... funny you should mention the bass as I really wanted that effect of the bass kicking in and boosting the song into its journey. Glad you enjoyed it.

The Last Goodbye
Dark yet poppy. The only pick I would have is that maybe the guitar is a tad out of tune? I hear it on the verse picked guitar parts mostly. I could be way off on that. Maybe it is just an effect. Like the hook in the chorus and the bassline in the verse is very catchy. Great tune. Love all your stuff.

Tuning
I think you spotted a tuning issue but not the right culprit! I'm convinced what you're hearing is my out of tune vocal! I always tune up my guitars prior to recording and during my sessions but my voice is another matter! I've already re-recorded the vocal on this which I'll post at some point once I've worked on some further BV. Thanks for listening.

slidey
Another cool song, really like the slide part - it's a hook! every song needs at least one of those.
Also like the guitar tones, the harmonies and the muted-string "chk chk" thing you do a couple of times.
I like this style of music a lot...
thanks for posting!

Slide...
Thanks for mentioning the slide stuff. I've always loved Dean Wareham's slide work on the Luna albums and wanted to evoke that. I remember Ridd talking about using slide loops but couldn't find anything that worked so I got a slide and played about. The slide hook was the first slide work I ever played just as I was getting to grips with it and it seemed to take the chorus into the next level so I was pleased.
I'm glad you noticed the "chk chk" too as that was a conscious effort to start using the guitar in other ways from straight strumming and riffing. I'm not a natural guitar player by any means but I'm working on finding a personal style.
Thanks for your kind words man.

I dig the slide over the chorus and there are some good ideas here. that guitar needs a tuning though!

I grew up in the 70's and 80's in the south of the UK in an Irish family. I had always loved music but was never given an opportunity to explore making it for myself. About 10 years ago I bought an acoustic guitar and began strumming in earnest. To d... [see more]
