Description
Sabbatical shamatical! I’m finding that this hit-and-run approach is working well for me. So here I am, back with another song.

Just a love song from my characteristically twisted perspective. Hope you enjoy it!

The Band:

Calchas [Micheal Wark]: Vocals, Acoustic guitars, and Charanga [Andean Lute].

Relic67 [Alec M]: Violin.

Andy Mackle: Percussion.

Heartfelt thanks to the boys in the band!

Lyrics
DAYS GO BY

I.
Jolted out from our dreaming;
that mean old alarm clock ringing.
We open our eyes to rise
and greet the brand new day.

II.
Distracted yet so serene.
Lost in our morning routines;
I catch a glimpse of your soul,
out the corner of my eye...

Bridge:
And just for a moment, a blink
coy Meaning smiles
---hoists her veil up,
and gives an etheric wink
as she goes floating by.

Chorus:
And bathed in Her holy light;
I clearly see all is right;
and I find that I’m quite content
to watch the days go by.

When all has been said and done;
hey baby, you are the one.
I’m happy to sit with you
and watch the days go by.

III.
The news of the world intruding,
confusion and fear exuding...
We struggle to free our minds
out from the web of lies.

IV.
Two ancient and weary souls in
a-never-ending-magic-lantern-show...
Our love is the only thing
on which we can rely.

Closing:
And when the curtain it finally closes;
---time for a change of clothing.
We will return here again
to watch the days go by.

Boats, eh?
Is this some kind of trick or what Daug?

Oh well...No need to try and keep up. For now, I'll hang around whenever I have a new post, and listen to and comment on everything that I can, and then step back till the next post. It's the only way I can get anything done!

Glad you like the tune bro!

MMmmm... love the Fiddle work!
Woots to Alec for the violin work, and Andy did great on the drums (though the mix made them a little "thin".) Mr. Wark, I lOVE the tune, although your main singing line is a little wobbly here and there (like *I* should talk)... the composition and the harmonies make me think this is a Moody Blues B-side... very nicely done! Really nice charanga accents too, now I know who to call to actually PLAY my "Andes Off" piece! :)

Yes! Yes! Yes!
"Woots" to Alec! He sounds like Fairport Convention's whirling dervish Ric Sanders on this piece.

As for me and my vocal. Well...I've always wobbled on my axis a bit.

RE the charanga: I don't own it, but can borrow it whenever I need to. Let me know if you wanna collab sometime.

Great acoustic band sound. Shades of The Waterboys. Charanga? I am impressed. Awesome fiddle break! Like the key change into the chorus. Nicely written tune.

Calchas said 23 days ago (October 28th, 2009)
Hello John!
I remember the Waterboys! (And Horslips, along with a host of others...)

The Charanga belongs to a good friend. This is the first time I've used it to strum chords. Turns out the first four sets of strings (EXcluding the high E strings) are tuned like a ukulele. So I found some ukulele chord charts online and got busy. I really like the end result. It adds a bit O' lilt.

RE the fiddle break: Alec totally OWNS that solo!

Thanks for listening and commenting friend!

This has
a sort of 'festival' folky feel about the rhythm and with the wonderful sound of the violin seems like all that rest is giving you plenty time for inspiration and giving you renewed zest.... you sound quite relaxed on this with your voice in fine form, cheers M

I was going for that folky feel of course, and Relic really gave it that Fairport Convention sound. I think he sounds remarkably like their current fiddle player Ric Sanders.

When I think that just about every style combo has been tried
I'm proven wrong to my great delight. Thanks to Mike and the guys for a fine tune that sets such a light and optimistic tone. Your lyrics also point to a cherished one in a directly honest and forthright way. The orchestration choice of a violin was right on and the performances all were terrific.

I hear what Drak says about the Moodies' sound here and there yet there is another band this reminds me of that I cannot put my finger on. This is a great tune and two listens aren't enough. On to 3rd...

Take care,
Doug

Hi Doug...
RE combos: That's one of the beauties of Macjams, isn't it? We're free to experiment and follow our unique musical visions, without having the Suits looking over our shoulders telling us what we can and cannot do. The results aren't always golden, but sometimes things gel quite nicely.

The lyrics are deliberately ambiguous. At any given time in the song one never knows which level of reality is being spoken of. This is because I believe ordinary, everyday reality is a theophany (so to speak). Nuff said...

Anyway, thanks so much for the encouraging words my friend. Glad you enjoyed the song!

Be well!

Perhaps if more people listened to your music
they would come to appreciate your point of view about everyday reality. To paraphrase a poem from the Moody Blues "it's all around if we would but perceive".

Peace,
Doug

RE words: Ha ha...I guess my "la la's" must suck...

As I listen to this I am reminded of the Moody Blues, which after looking at some of your fan's comments I see is not an original thought, but hey - that's what I hear. Very folksy tune with that late 60's, early 70's type of chord progression and vocal melodies and harmonies. Your collabs are getting better and tighter Mike - good job - thanks for sharing (and reminding me to have a listen) - Sig

RE 60's/early 70's: Yeah, my "sound" pretty much dates me; but that's when I grew up and it's who I am. If I can approximate the sound and feel of my old heroes, I am a happy camper!

Rubber chicken for the soul
This one's good for what ails you... me. I keep looking for ways to describe your voice, which I like a lot. Today's words? "Resignation to resolve." Here, I'm getting a Lucid Dream feel, as if a dream of some kind of Medieval adventure evaporates from the brainpan as you wake, and you resign yourself to living in the "real world."

It's all good here, from the bones (chord structure) to the sticks to that fine violin. What would I change? Hell, I could pick if I tried but I'd rather just sit here and listen to the music go by.

You never fail to crack me up Bob!
But as there is a certain amount of "resignation" in my heart and soul, it is no surprise to me that it shows up in my vox.

Your dream description tells me that I succeeded in making the lyrics vague enough to evoke a number of interpretations. My own interpretation is personal, and I think perhaps only one or two folks here share it to degree. But that's the beauty of lyrics like these!

Glad you enjoyed this one my friend. And now, back to lucid waking...

Cool song!
This was a great listen from start to end. You capture the listener in the Intro and keep me there until the song is finished. Everything with this song is great! The only constructive criticism I have is that the mix is sometimes somewhat busy. Specially in the choruses. On the other a part what makes the song so intriguing is that there is a lot going on there! I like your vocals a lot, they are real!

So good
to hear from you Magnus. Back when you were a regular here (a few years ago when most of what I was producing was crap) I was a huge fan of your work. Many thanks for the encouraging words!

Be well friend!

a
folkish and delicious song.
Killer violin by Relic.
Wonderful chorus!
I has the effect of those bombastic and cathartic ones but you didn´t even need to raise your voice!Those vocal harmonies gave me goosebumps (in a good way!).

Great stuff
I really like the folkish feel here. The production is amazing. What an amazing collab! Vocals and backing vocals are awesome as well/
