Description
Futatsu (japanese word for 2)

char asked a good question: "what is an open fifth?" i first answered with rye humour about whiskey in a flask. however, now i have decided to answer her question with an example. an open fifth is two notes, 4 steps apart on the scale, for example, A and E. open fifths are often frowned upon, because they create an ambiguous harmony, neither major nor minor. they are missing the middle note to make a triad.

i had an idea for a personal challenge. can music be made with two notes? only open fifths? i chose an arpeggio of an open fifth. i repeat it at different speeds, in different voices, and sometimes different keys. but it is always an open fifth. it is simple music, with a simple purpose, from a simple mind.

Mission accomplished Eduard
The sounds prove it, and it turned out to be quite interesting and pretty. Teaching by example works for me. thanks for the lesson my friend,

you know
a lot of heavy metal music relies on just fifths... the notes as well. nice piece

well
you know i have a soft spot for open fifths. or is it a pathology? this is a great little experiment. you can definitely hear how the tension grows as the need for a resolution increases. a very effective compositional tool. always fun to do these little trials and find new things.

i would take it one step further

can you compose a piece with just one note (of course there is at least one piece that was written with no notes at all)

Very nice!
Didn't know about open fifths, but I like this kind of experimentation. I tried to do one with one note only, a C at that. (http://www.macjams.com/song/46696) However, this piece was at least twice as enjoyable to listen to ;-) My only crit would be that it is a bit shortish, I suppose I have to download and put on repeat...

Thanks and take care.

take the fifth!
cool concept, nice execution!

thanks

a fifth is actually 4 steps of the scale, not 5 whole steps...

Clever idea....
This is almost a little fugue. You could seriously make it go on longer and it would continue to be interesting. Very ingenious.
Peace,

Very Nice and
love the sound.Of course the horns of old used to sound the charge were in open fifths as well. Kind of reminds me of that. I also could go for an open fifth of scotch. Just saying lol
