The System Finds a Way to Stay the Same

Description
I wrote this a couple of weeks ago in a frenzy of cynicism, but just recorded it last night... I'd welcome thoughts and suggestions here, as I'm not sure about the wisdom of combining timpani samples with an analog synth plug-in and my Drop-D acoustic guitar strumming, but rather than figure it out on my own I thought I'd submit it to the collective MJ wisdom.

Lyrics
THE SYSTEM FINDS A WAY TO STAY THE SAME

It started so well
The ceremony on the lawn
The party was swell
The band played all our favorite songs

Flashbulbs and shutter clicks
Paintings and candlesticks
But we got nothing that we really wanted
We got nothing that we really wanted

Now you and I sit across this table
Neither of us deserves the blame
Momentum dissolves into inertia
The system finds a way to stay the same

When did we go wrong?
Or was it fated from the start?
Were you putting me on?
Was I only playing out a part?

Blank stares and repartee
That's all the news today
We got nothing that we really wanted
We got nothing that we really wanted

Now you and I sit here with these papers
Neither of us deserves the blame
Momentum regresses to inertia
The system finds a way to stay the same

You and I sit here with our failure
We tried to start a brushfire but we brushed against the flame
Momentum burned down into inertia
The system finds a way to stay the same

This is lovely ....I can see how this is so
passionate to you ...and you certainly express it
all and I admire all the wonderful wisdom here
using timpani is a classic folk way on the 60s ..
and you just brought back this sound ..it gives
depth maybe this is what you were looking for ..
and its wonderful ..thnx alot for sharin !!!!

Intelligent music
Really like that relaxing mood, the sad feeling.
Melody line is solid, but could be a bit more inventive in my ear.
Chord changes also good but some variations would catapult the tune to another sphere, I think.
I like your tune, very good work in my opinion!!

beautiful recording
and excellent lyrics... I told you I love your voice and this is exceptional in the vocal department. The accompaniment both guitar and the backing synth (?) sound wonderful and well balanced..... just lovely, regards M

System
Another winner, Michael. Beautiful melody, wonderfully sung. I think the back tracks work really well. Might turn up the synth a tad on outro.Love your stuff. My only nit is the line "momentum regresses to inertia". This just clangs to my ear, scans a little clever clever. but then lyrics are such a matter of taste. It's your song...and a really lovely one.

neat arrangement
I like the melody on this one, good singing and playing.
I especially liked the little arpeggios that sounded like strings on the chorus... that could have been even brought out a little more I thought...
nice post!

oh man...
great sound... gives me kind of a old simisonic/the weakerthans sound to it.... this is seriously a great song... your voice has just the right amount of strain to not "go country" and everything comes together really nice...

lyrics are great as well....

What they said
I think the timpani goes well with your guitar. I think whatever you put together would work, with your great vocals!

great work
your vocals are beautiful man, and i really appreciate your phrasing/rhyming, it's so natural. so much to like about this...the keys, the string sounds, the backups, all so quietly but effectively done. i generally hate political songs but i could listen to this all day. really nice tune.

As painful as breakups are, they serve as inspiration for the most heartfelt songs. Really enjoyed your vocals especially. I think the timpani/guitar is working fine here.
