Description
Some of you may remember Queen Caroline's Lament (http://www.macjams.com/song/54777 ) a song I wrote for a campaign trying to stop their council estate being bulldozed to make way for luxury flats.

I decided I didn't want to leave it at that and have embarked on yet another project. This one is called Suite For Queen Caroline. The idea is to get a CDs worth of songs that focus on individuals involved in the project and what they feel about it. Someone losing their home who doesn't want to go and maybe someone who can't wait to leave the estate and move elsewhere. The view of the demolition man or the reporter covering the story. What are their motivations and feelings?

For the non-Brits Walthamstow is an area in North East London (a long way from Hammersmith where the estate is)

This is the song of the council leader.

I am indebted to:

Tim (Macferret) - who wrote the "bridge" (it was supposed to segue into another song but didn't in the end), played slide and added some strings

Pete (http://www.cdbaby.com/cd/peteyoung) - who agreed to sing on the chorus then suggested I also sing and then it all got a bit out of hand

Charles (Sir Dennis Crowther) - who added a piano part at the last minute.

I used - Garageband, Apple drum loops, Yam 12 string, Strat and the Boss GT-8, Ibanez bass

A Good Nights Sleep © Dick Langford / Tim de Ferrars

They say that I'm a callous man
But they don't really understand
That I have to do just what I can
To make their lives worthwhile

They say that they don't want to go
But honestly how can they know
What life is like in Walthamstow
Ah, life could be so fine

How do you sleep?
Very well you know/thank you

I feel that I'm misunderstood
All I try to do is good
I'm only doing what I should
I'm doing good for me

And so I'll wield the council sword
I'm told that I could be a lord
or get a good job on the board
of a blue chip company

Bridge
I need a reason
To acknowledge you at all:
My eyes are roving round the room
Seeking men who wield the power.
I think I'm dreaming:
These dreary emails on my desk.
Sweaty ugly people - pleading cases,
Hoping I'm impressed.

Interestingly enough
I find I write better when I've got a purpose to write. I'm hardly a self starter and giving myself a project works very well for me.

Thanks for the comments and taking the time to listen.

What life is like in Walthamstow
Great song Dick. Your vocals are about as good as they get, and I mean that in the very best way. I've always liked your voice. I like the way you take your time going into each next verse. That space is very dramatic and well designed. It builds up nicely and then blammo, that offensive raw meat lead guitar of yours drives through my lawn, through the bushes and crashes into the pool. A clean pool.

The bridge is perfect and the chorus of vocals is heavenly.

Thanks Dick.

D/L'd and faved!!

I don't know
and the point is that neither does the council leader. He just needs to relocate these people and he doesn't really care where that is.

Thanks for the comments on the vocals I also thought it was one of my better performances for once!

The solo was one-off and I don't think I could ever repeat it so I left it warts and all so I hope you don't find any in that pond of yours!

Thanks Bob

You know that
little break you had did you some good I think. You have come out of that in amazing musical and creative shape.
This is just wonderful, love the unusual but compelling progressions and the changes of mood. Great instrument choices. Grabs the attention right from the start, production is sensational.
Everyones contribution is a real contribution - that guitar break is very impressive. Run out of words so will download and listen some more. Thanks.

Love the words you put together Dick - this has a very Floyd feel/sound.
I like the way you set musical (and especially lyrical) parameters and then develop your ideas within them. Great production - really enjoy your vocals and guitar.

I;m not sure why the vocals are any better than normal but they seemed to come very easily this time. As I said to Neil, I'm in protest singer mode so maybe that's got something to do with it.

Thanks fro the comments

very impressive
Everything about this song is great.
I loved the inversion at the end of the chorus.
I just had to dry and work it out.
Is it F sharp minor with an with an inversion on the 5th fret of the G ?
Whatever it is it works brilliantly.
And love the way the 'chorus' drops down.
That guitar solo is also wonderful.
I live near Stevenage where some of the first wave of evictees of the east end slum clearance were 'moved' to and the sense of displacement is sometimes very evident.
Anway
Enjoyed very very much

Very generous Mr KB!
Mr KB

Ah, a man with some experience of the effects of displacement. I lived in Basildon for 20 years and there didn't appear to be that sort of feeling but maybe that was because Basildon at that time (in the late 50s early 60s) was actually far more preferable to an East End slum.

The difference for these people is that they don't live in a slum. They live on a council estate with a thriving community that is seen as prime real estate.

The dissonance you hear is an F# minor with an added C (played in Em shape with a capo on the 2nd fret.

If you're in Stevenage why not join us for one of our London MJ beers sometime. Normally Wednesday evenings near London Bridge station. We meet up every 5 or 6 weeks with the next planned for early December? We get a reasonable turn out - usual suspects are Len Gold, Stevel, Bob Rogers, Komrade K, Peter Bauckham, Chris Chaplin and Sir Dennis Crowther. Slim Girl Fat and Simon (Mr MJ himself) turned up once!

Many thanks for your comments and the detailed listen.

Cheers

The highest accolade possible in my book. I don't deserve it but I'm more than happy to pretend :-)

Is he good, bad, indifferent
In the beginning it sounded like you were going to try to make him sympathetic in some way, but in that last verse he's just plain selfish. Could be. In all likelihood, _is_.

Nice tune, especially the vocals. I'm not sure what that subsonic rumble in the beginning means. The rest of the tune is not at all in the aggressive electronic mood, so I'm a bit confused.

Btw, great guitar solo.

Perceptions
He believes he is doing good. He believes that relocating the residents is in their best interests. He also believes that moving the residents is in his best interests and so he justifies and validates his actions.

By his own moral code he's behaving perfectly reasonably. By our moral code he's a git.

The rumble is simply an opening to get the listeners attention and wonder what's going on.

Thanks for the very perceptive comments.

Cheers

I don't understand...
why you're not writing and producing your 10th West End/Broadway show, Dick. You have such a feeling for these sort of "grand spectacle" numbers, this one being powerful in its lyrics, but understated in the music itself. Wow. The chorus "How Do You Sleep" is powerful! Ah, and then there's your signature metal lead at about 2:58 or so. Just a stunning performance all around: composition, orchestration, playing, singing, mix of the whole. Such a pro. What a pleasure to hear your work.
Peace.

Greasy pole
The phrases 'Pink Floyd' and 'concept album' sprung to mind whilst listening to this (particularly with the cracking guitar solo) . Another scary thought I had was 'agit-musical'!

With your wonderful production job this is the musical equivalent of Panavision and Technicolor. A very powerful song - fine work all round.

Great song Dick -
I really like your vocals here - relaxed and to the point - serious business with a bit of weariness. And that guitar lead is just amazing. Good luck with the whole project - looking forward to further installments. Nice slide guitar in there too - pretty classic feel all the way around. Mr. Pink would approve.

You have a way with words Dick
and for pleading cases for the hopeless. We can only hope your efforts are not in vain my friend.

It always seems that once a bureaucracy gets an idea in their heads to do something to, "Help", the little people, there's no changing their minds. After all, they are the elite in our societies are they not. They know so much better than we what is good for "Us" Rubbish I say, but then who am I to question the "government" about anything, I'm just one of the little people after all.

Great track on all parts, especially the lyrics and vocals Dick. Kudos to all that contributed to this. I sincerely hope it does some good my friend. I hope it helps to bring the power back to the people.

Great musical bed as well, indeed this is an excellent song.

wonderfully overstated....
well you asked for that. it's great. i love the 'how do you sleep' sections especially. you're really comfortable with the lyrics too and that's a real art...because if you don't sound confident then everything falls apart. it reminded me of supertramp in places. just hit the guitar break now...very impressive. and it's a great bridge too....so everyone did a great job. and yes...very floyd too.

You know, if you just go along to get along you might get free rent in exchange for changing the lightbulbs and pulling rotten hair from clogged kitchen drains. Or ... You could keep making music as good as this, and sleep well. Really good one. You also make GarageBand sound like Logic here, nice job at the controls.
