Description
Michael Pool is a friend of mine from the early 90's. He hosted the Thirsty Ear Poetry series at some place we called the Dead Animal Club. There were stuffed heads on the walls. Deer, boars, etc... Michael invited poets and bands to his weekly event. I was lucky enough to have been invited to perform. I had a killer ska band (Hopscotch) backing me that night because my real band bailed on me. It was a great night and I performed a very different version of this song. There were over 20 people there that night. :^)

I didn't tune my bass nor my voice. I'm just having fun and had a tiny window of time to do it in.

I think Michael is in NYC now... anyone know him?

Lyrics
MICHAEL POOL IS A FRIEND OF MINE
HE IS SO COOL
I HOPE HE DO NOT DIE

MICHAEL POOL IS A FRIEND OF MINE
HE IS SO FUNNY
SOMETIMES MAKES ME CRY

I HOPE THAT HE GET
RICH AND FAMOUS
WRITING BOOKS
THAT REALLY SHAME US

WRITE GOOD STORIES
NEVER SCARY
MAYBE SOMETIMES
NOT TOO SCARY

TALK TO PEOPLE
IN OUR PLACES
IN OUR PAPER
IN OUR FACES

HOPE THAT HE GET
RICH AND FAMOUS
MENTIONS US
BUT DOESN’T NAME US

MICHAEL POOL IS A FRIEND OF MINE
I GOT HIS PHOTO
FROM ANOTHER TIME

MICHAEL POOL IS A FRIEND OF MINE
I GAVE HIM RECORDS
AND GAVE HIM A RIDE
(I GAVE HIM A RIDE!)

I HOPE THAT HE GET
RICH AND FAMOUS
WRITING BOOKS
THAT REALLY SHAME US

WRITE GOOD STORIES
NEVER SCARY
MAYBE SOMETIMES
NOT TOO SCARY

TALK TO PEOPLE
IN OUR PLACES
IN OUR PAPER
IN OUR FACES

HOPE THAT HE GET
RICH AND FAMOUS
MENTIONS US
BUT DOESN’T NAME US

Because of my buddy cj's recent publishing deal, I remembered this old song and recorded it.

My favorite line is, "I gave him records and gave him a ride"

I'm laughing.

It's Really Good, But...
It needs some compression. I tried it at home tweakin' yer MP3 on my old rattrap PC and that's that's when it really started singin'. The compression makes the guitars rip and brings the whole mix into your face.
cjdaley said 2692 days ago (November 11th, 2009)
unpredictable
Just when I said you were getting as sophisticated as Brian wilson , there you go back to basics with a sparkling punk number. the whirling voices really add something, though.

thanks for the nod.

Excellent!
Great fun Bob. Reminds me a little of the Kinks song David Watts (but only because it namechecks someone :-) )

Punk is not dead yet.

Fine work my friend and great lyrics "I hope he do not die" - classic stuff!

Cheers

Buzz
Michael hung his head when I performed a totally different version of this at his venue. I think he was embarrassed because, well, because I tend to embarrass people like him.

I was disappointed that the only thing I found was from an article on a band called Pee Shy. He gave them their first gig at his place and they went on to be big superstars.

I hope he hears this too. I haven't embarrassed him in years.

Thanks King!

That Sound
Tech Talk: My set up is a simple one - The Hondo II is plugged into my Rat pedal > Distortion set about halfway > Filter set about a third > Volume set a bit over halfway. The pedal runs into my sweet sounding Ampeg BA 110 bass amp that my awesome wife bought me when we first fell in love (It's the love that you hear). I mic the amp and run that into my Tapco Link.USB audio interface and that goes into the iMac. I don't use any effects in GB because I love the sound.

Thanks for asking Bryn

HEADBANGIN!!
I started out the night by trying to play some of my songs live, then I realized how bare they sound without a second instrument so I thought I'd go ahead and record this and see what it sounded like with 2 basses, drums and 3 vocal tracks. I decided not to try to add any synthesizer sounds, so that let me get this recorded and "mixed" in record time - just over 3 hours!!

Yeah, it sounds like just another 5X song!

Over 20 People
The great news is that my guitar playing buddy from Hopscotch bought an iMac. I can't imagine rocking with him on MacJams! I think I'll send this tune to him and see if it inspires him to join forces. Can't have too many good guitar players, can we?

Thanks Bud.

grasshoppers, not the drink, that's for old folks
see how much fun a lo fi punk song is once you've perfected your pop chops? it's like a bar fight after studying kung fu for a decade in tibet. love how you brought that one fingered brian wilson pushup to the dew drop inn and slayed the chorus. made me grin.

Dude,

I put my lyrics in the mp3 file so the 1 million downloaders can sing along!

Besides, I intentionally used poor grammar and bad spelling. So punk rock.

Thanks Vic,

I was desperately in need of something a little faster and louder than my last couple of songs. It felt good, but it was a decaffeinated night.

I think
it's great that the state of Florida is giving instruments and recording gear to the lamppost scratchers. Keeps them busy. I've seen what they do in those dumpsters.

Just kidding. I love it. It's madness. Makes me want to dance like Ally Sheedy (sp?) in The Breakfast Club. Dandruff and all. I wish Apple would re-release Gb 1976.

Double Trouble
The funny thing is, not only do I play the bass poorly, but I play it poorly twice!

I'm twice as bad as anyone around.

Breaking the rules, spilling stuff and keeping it fresh since 1984!

Fantastic
Hey Bob. This one got by me!! It's fantastic. Really energetic and fun. Your voice is full of character - I wish I could sing. And something that's often overlooked on Macjams - the lyrics are great. Quirky grammar really works here - has a Jonathan Richmond feel to it. The mock sense of awe is reinforced by the childlike phrasing - it's innocent and knowing at the same time. You sir, are a genius!!

Yes! I know Michael Pool from Tampa FL
I was a poet(& now an MFA'er) around when Michael created Thirsty Ear. You say he's in NYC? I'm up in Western Mass. now. It'd be grand to get in touch w/ him.

What a cool...
...vocal treatment for a punk song! I liked the stripped-down, bare-bones lyrics too; no screwing around, just says what you want to say about Michael Pool and gets on with it. Kinda sound like The Proclaimers on this one.

Michael Pool Update:
Last week Michael was googling himself like he does every night before he goes to sleep and he discovered a new result in his desperate search. Yup, this song. It allowed him to track me down and call me on the phone. MacJams is not just a place where musicians are getting rich any more, it's a public resource for people googling themselves and trying to reconnect with lost loved ones.

As you will also notice, 2001space was up all night googling Michael Pool when he stumbled upon this song.

People tell me I'm a matchmaker and I find it hard to deny.

Thanks MacJams.

Now if only there was a shirt I could wear....
