Description
Hey kids, time for another DVP tune. Paddy is feeling romantic these days, so he suggested a Don Quixote theme and began tilting at some dramatic guitar. I found that dusty book with my school notes scribbled in the gutters and did a quick re-read. Man, what a great damn book. As relevant today as it was 400 years ago. So there you have it. The end result tremolos like a chihuahua and kicks ass like an Andalusian rooster. And is of course about unrequited love, because what isn't?

Lyrics
i left my home to find a purpose
some reason to live
those stories crying on the bookshelf
so easy for them
to shame my life
i'm a writer of a kind
i write with breath and blood
i'll damn well prove i've got a story to tell
a better tale than i'd find
in their weak spines

dulcinea dulcinea don't you lose heart
i see you staring from your cold tower like the north star
dulcinea dulcinea don't you look away
from the mountains to the plains i've sung your name

i guess that crazy's what they call you
when you know what you want
and you'll fight for it yeah
i see the world the way i made it
so easy for them to criticize
i'm a fighter of a kind
i fight with love and blood
i'll damn well show them what it is to live and die
by one's own hand
i'm my own man
i'm my own man
i'm my own man

dulcinea dulcinea don't you lose heart
i see you staring from your cold tower like the north star
dulcinea dulcinea don't you look away
from the mountains to the plains i've sung your name

through the sails of a windmill
like a flickering move star
there you are
there you are

A strong depiction of Don Quixote--
He comes across much more heroic here and less ridiculous than I remember him! Makes for a solid and convincing rock tune. I really like the pace and mood...

i always thought that
the strength of don quixote is that he chooses to live a life of imagination in the midst of the daily mundane. life is short, it's not a bad idea...

glad you liked the mood, this is definitely the most atmospheric type thing we've tried to do. thanks for the listen!

Pace and mood...
... this was the hardest for me. Slowing the pace puts pressure on my guitar playing as you can hide a multitude of sins with a 160bpm punk rocker but not here.
Craig gave us a really heroic Quixote here it's true, but he feels like a 21st Century hero, flawed, fragile but certain in his beliefs.
Thanks for listening

I like it!
I like your lyrics a lot. There is a great drive in them, and the vocals carry the lyrics in way that make them stand out. Both the vocals and the songwriting reminds me a bit of Neil Young, and I could have mentioned a lot of other references if I just could remember them:). Looking forward to hear more!

hey
we'll take a neil young comparison. Paddy's in the UK and i'm in the U.S. so combine those two and you get Canada. Thanks for the listen and glad you liked it! I'm a selters fan...

Neil Young
... yeah there's always been a common ground between me and Craig in terms of influences, Neil Young being just one of many. The lead vocal Craig delivered here is nothing short of exceptional. I know he'll blush at those words but his voice here takes the little tune I recorded up to the next level.

Great lyrics. I like "write with breath and blood". The doubled vocals work well, and the heavily chorused guitars convey the mood perfectly. I'm hearing the Neil Young in here too. Great job overall.

breath and blood
i really like the idea of a person writing the "novel" of their life by living it. that's an umberto ecco idea that he got from julian of norwich probably. glad you hear neil young too, that can't be bad!

Doubling
There's a lot of doubling in here. Craig's high vocal and my low one, doubled guitar all over the place it's true. We aimed for atmosphere and mood. The words Craig wrote are some of his best and I'm happy he chose to share them with me on this one.
Thanks for your kind words man

Perfect guitar?
Fetere if you heard all the takes I binned you might change your mind about the "perfect" guitar!
Production wise I've come a long long way in a short amount of time. I work hard at getting the tones and shapes of the song, finding space in the mix for each instrument. Time spent on it can help to pull an interesting piece into the realms of the fabulous.
Craig's voice is so easy to work with, needing very little reverb or compression. His dry vocal track would startle you with it's consistency on these takes.
Thanks for your kind words.

Killer
The vocal treatment on this is so good. The melody, with it's unexpected peaks, moves the story. Glad that Paddy got the romance bug. I'm also a big fan of that subtle guitar work. Works really well with the steady vocals.

vocals
i keep trying to expand the range of my vocals but i always feel i'm just stretching them thin. 'course neil young has done ok by stretching thin vocals and that's probably why the neil comparisons have rained down on this one. i tried to get right up on the mic and give it some feeling. glad you liked the melody too, you're one of the guys on MJ who set the melody bar for me.

Subtle and steady
Craig is hiding his light under a bushel. Here (and I've told him so) is one of his best vocal performances ever. The tone and emotion in this performance is incredible and that he shared it with me on this song is a wonderful privilege.
As for my guitar work, thanks for the comments. I find it difficult and frustrating to play with subtlety, not being a natural. I'm particularly happy with the lead motif before the verses. I'm pleased that the romace I wanted to achieve came across.
I always hang on your words Eric, thanks for the praise.

Sweetness
You had at me at the first tremelo. Great band sound. Killer chorus. Dig the big bottom end on this. Guitars just right. This hits the sweet spot throughout. Like a guttering candle at the end. Nice.

isnt that
tremolo cool? paddy did a great job dialing in that tone. same for the band sound. i agree it hits the sweet spot, especially in phones. love your guttering candle analogy, very cool.

Guttering candle
Man of all the comments left this one drove home hardest. I can;t take any credit for Craig's stupendous vocal or his beautiful melody, but I'll take the guttering candle every time. There's a song, called "Cow" by Sparklehorse, the ending of which I have always adored. The outro here was an attempt to achieve a similar fragility, a sense of the band breaking down. I'm pleased you heard it and even more stoked at the beautiful way you described it.
Thanks for listening

A Better Tale Than I'd Find
In Their Weak Spines -

Mucho impressive lyrics and as everyone else seems to agree, your vocal performances are so good. A great guitar sound and overall mood.

Excellent work guys. Craig, you're really showing us a different side of your singing abilities.

a different side
nah its all the same side, just changing the lighting. people tell me i look best in the dark. glad you liked it dude, i agree the guitar sound is tops. paddy has taken to his guitar god band role like a platypus to the great dividing range.

The platypus speaks
He can play it down all he likes, but the boy sung good! Like you, Bob, I think he's pushed his vocals to another level. Who'd a thunk the Tempie-meister had such a deep deep heart? Well I would. He's just found another way to sing it and I hope to mine that seam some more.
As MJs first official guitar platypus I say go Craig!

Good stuff guys, but Craig, we've been more than tolerant of your "side project" with Paddy. It's time to get back in the saddle and return to your duties as vibraslappist with your real band.
