Description
This started out as a recording of a heartbeat that I ran through a bunch of effects and manipulated. I sent it to Kevin and Bryn and they each started to tear it apart and twist it into something new. After a few times of it bouncing around between us, we decided to do a group APOD version, and 3 "solo" versions.

My version is not so much a song as it is a soundtrack to a scene in an imaginary film. The title pretty much sums up what is going on in the scene. Sometimes I hear everything working out okay at the end, and then sometimes it sounds to me like the guy is doomed. You be the judge of that.

I( didn't use any synths on this at all. Everything was done with filters, reverb and delay. I incorporated chunks of sound files that Kevin and Bryn sent, and some other manipulations I put together. Probably not for everyone, but I had a great time doing this one.

Here is a link for all of the versions that we did together and seperately. We like to refer to it as the Steampod EP:

I was listening to the EP on my iPod walking
in Park Slope today when this came on and I started looking in the sky for the planes. I love how this atmosphere is so complete and seductive. Great use of the many raw materials. This has been a fun project - a mini LIOLI - thanks for starting us off with the heartbeat.

Nice
one!
Very realistic atmosphere. It has the exactly right amount of tension.
It can be proudly called a cinematic soundtrack!

P.O.W.
Definitely good film soundtrack sound design. The tense, eerie atmosphere might be good for a dream sequence or a flashback sequence.

aha
i knew there was a more appropriate term for this sort of thing; there should be a sound design category. thanks for the listen and the comment.

Excellent Michael
I would never have guessed we could have got so much mileage out of a humble loop
Amazing
What is even more amazing is that we could have got even more (but we had to stop somewhere)

right?
a simple recording of a heartbeat (a poor quality one at that) really went a long ways. as Kevin noted, this turned into a mini-LIOLI challenge.

men running, forest, breathing
'soundtrack to imaginary film' could describe the bulk of your work, and you're one of the few people i've ever heard who can get away with it. your 'soundtrack' compositions are serious stuff, and i always enjoy them at a time when i don't listen to much instrumental music at all.

thanks
very kind words indeed. i go back and forth with instrumental music: sometimes I just love sound, but then who can deny the charm of a couple of voices at work. Thanks for listening.

so
glad you liked this one, I assumed it would probably be a little "not fun" for some to listen to. but then again, I know that I can't be the only one to listen to stuff like this.

Soundtrack
Yep, but no need for a movie: the images are already there.
Experimental, concrete. Incredible there are not synths. First time I stand to listen 6+m of this kind of music. Man, are you going to record the next incarnation of DSOTM next year?

it is reaaally long huh? i started to make it morph into something really angelic sounding, but it would have been twice as long at that point.

captures the attention
Listening intently with headphones. I picture this guy hiding in an alley while waiting for the soldiers to leave, so he can escape. I think they walked on and he survived, but then, I'm a sucker for happy endings. This was cool, Michael!

that's usually where i go to. at the end when you hear the truck and the dog barking (and the music gets a little major sounding) he gets back to his own camp. mission accomplished. thanks for the listen and the kind words.

fitting
this past week i was watching WWII in HD. rare footage from soldiers perspective. usually I'm not into war stuff, but man oh man. this would of made a great soundtrack to some parts of it, so much surrealism in war

Great
mix on this, nice spread and pans, liked all the sounds except I was not able to put an image to the 'rustleing' sound. if they are footsteps I think I would have added some running, and a little concrete perhaps, but everything else is clear and solid. Good use of Freesounds.org, I enjoy that resource as well.

Chill Out Noir
When I read the description I thought this might have similarities to PF's On The Run but thankfully this is in some other space altogether. Actually the closest comparison I'm getting is the KLF's Chill Out but with a distinctly darker turn. This is excellent work indeed, intensely atmospheric repaying repeated listenings - and such a great bunch of collaborators.

Freesound is such a wonderful resource - I used it extensively for an sound installation project I did a couple of years ago.

elegant use of found sound
Just happened upon your "cinematic soundscape"--this is so cleanly and artfully executed. For some reason it made me repeatedly imagine being in a modern orchestral concert hall--don't ask me why, it must be something about the nature of your arrangement that made me think of modern "classical' music. Plus I totally want to visit freesound.org now!

Behind Enemy Lines
I think he has survived so far.. whew, no one from the train saw him! That dude with the machine gun must be chasing him. Uh oh I think he might be hopeless, I'm pretty sure he got shot. He's bleeding out, and now he's losing consciousness. The machine gunner got him after all! Interesting story.
