Lyrics
I want a girl who smells like gasoline
I want a girl who don't know the difference
Between a handshake and a smile
She'd love me for a while
Then she'd drop and watch me bleed.
I want a girl who thinks she's far above me
I want a girl who doesn't think I matter
And when she's telling me sweet lies
There's no good in her goodbyes
She sticks around just to push and shove me.

Masochistic love. Give me some more.
When I get analytic of all this masochistic love
I can only beg for more.

I want a girl who plays a wicked mind game
I want a girl who will just leave me guessing
And if I tell her what my hunch is
She will pull none of her punches
Leaving my heart broke and lame.
I want a girl who's not afraid to tell me
She don't find me the least bit attractive
She's just with me out of pity
But she's leaving 'cause it's shitty
Once again my ugly face has killed me

Masochistic love. Give me some more.
When I get analytic of all this masochistic love
I can only beg for more.

choice tunage
excellent pop tune, everything works, but I particularly liked the chord changes on the chorus. also the guitar part around 1:19. what kind of electric guitar are you playing on this one?

Thanks
The guitar on this one was probably my beat up Squire Tele that I use as a backup. Well, I've used it as a main guitar on a few tracks here, too. I think it's the guitar I used on my cover of Dolby's "Half a Million Miles".

4 Track
Well put together song. Great changes. Radio station quality. Really dug the lyrics. I guess that means you did an excellent job with this oldie. Joined your new page btw.

Thanks for making my Sunday

are you going to eventually redo some of these "oldies"?

revamping to the oldies
Some of them I will redo. Some of them have a really lo-fi quality that just wouldn't work revamped. I've been really studying up on the recording process for the last two years and I'm getting better, but there's a charm in just plugging in and taking the first take no matter what. Or at least it appeals to me.

I was 21. Skinny and mopey. Just like the girls like 'em. I do love the Clash, but wouldn't blame them for this one :)

a lennon garage sale
and i almost missed it. all a cool pop song needs is some muted guitar and a whistleable melody. love the phrasing and the killer lyrics: 'she's just with me out of pity/but she's leaving cause it's shitty/once again my ugly face has killed me'. classic.

A lennon garage sale
great way of putting it. My roommate at the time was really in to the "There's no good in her '"goodbyes'" line until I let him know I lifted it from Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons, with a bit of license.

Gasoline
Great melody and lyric. Agree the changes on the chorus really lift the tune. I dig the stripped down feel, just the acoustic and bass. Totally works. Ever heard Marshall Crenshaw's "Cynical Girl?" Maybe the definitive word on this topic, but I like your take, too!

Cynical Girl
I do love Marshall Crenshaw, but must admit I hadn't heard the song until you pointed it out. Funny that both were done about the same time. His is naturally definitive.

You
used to be good..............and still are of course. This is a catchy hit.
It would be nice to hear it reproduced. Im guessing you have less free time now, than when you did this. This kind of music has always appealed to me.

You should hear
what I'm going to sound like. It's all downhill from here. I actually do plan on redoing this one. I'm just having trouble with the music. Direction-wise I'm kind of at a loss. If you have any ideas I'd love to hear 'em!

Interesting title
Kind of warns you of what's coming. I wonder, was this done tongue in cheek or was there a, I don't know...girl in mind when you wrote this? Interesting work - thanks for sharing - Sig

haha
It's from a mopey period. I had just broken up with a really sweet girl who was really an angel. So I figured a guy like me should only be with girls that smell like gas and are impolite, etc. Leaving the sweet ones for successful guys that drive BMW's.

I haven't listened
to the song yet, but the title had me rolling. I'm trying to drag the curser up to click on the start button. Nice Klee like art work. Yours?

The lyric are fun too. It, to me, would have a little move weight on it with some drums coming in a bout a third the way through. It's cool as is. Makes me think of times around the camp fire along the beach with all the accouterments for a real good time and having one.

Fun stuff here, keep on ............

The song definitely needs something to round it out. Thanks for listening. And I don't know who did the art. I don't even know why it was in my pictures folder. I do like it, though.

Love bites:
I never learned how to make music be "happy" inside four tracks -- I'd bounce tracks into hiss-oblivion. But this tune has great bones. This is a great, grizzly little anti-love bite in the acoustic-rocking tradition of a younger Nick Lowe. I always look forward to your posts. Never mind the "bones" comment, this is more like a good wine, it blooms as the air hits it (meaning it builds well).

Thanks, Bob!
I love my 4 track and actually want to record on it again soon, but using Garageband has forced me to be a little more disciplined in my approach. I used to insist on things peaking at about +5. Thanks for your comments!

the difference between a handshake and a smile
E-Bear,

when you strip your songs down to these very bare bones, you reveal your strengths as well as your weaknesses, hence the 4 tracks. Well, all I see or hear is very powerful lyrics, enviable vocals and roots rock guitar that I totally love.

Now I want to grab my Tascam 4 track and try to do something as cool as this!

Keep 'em coming!

Saw the post by racerat and had to hear the original. Great job on this one. DLed and Fav'd. Killer oldies vibe with a rock edge. Excellent songwriting and a great performance. The slipshod delivery of this song really works.

Love it.
Somehow, despite having three hard drives and backup software, I managed to delete the version we did of this one. We need to redo it. Actually, though, I think this plain 4-track version is better than what I recorded in my "fancy" studio.
