Description
Rust. Nothing a little WD40 can't fix.

actually this song started out being a acoustic song. after adding a couple clean electrics I decided I didn't need the acoustics. Out they went. Then after adding a few support guitar tracks I decided I didn't need all the clean electric parts so..out a good chunk of them went. After deciding to add some synth tracks I once again found I didn't need all the clean electric stuff so ... out with more of those. so from folky to electro rock

for the distorted guitars I dug out my old Big Muff pi pedal that I bought back in '74. still works after all these years

Lyrics
Rust

rusty gears will grind down when you're not in motion
and the world will seem like it's slowed down

rusty wheels no longer spin the same way
there is no easy way to get around

wipe the rust from your face
shed the rust from your skin
clear the rust from your eyes and see

rust never sleeps, i heard those songs before
and i keep going back there to hear it once more

rusty doors remain closed i forgot for so long
that those doors were there anymore

wipe the rust from your face
shed the rust from your skin
clear the rust from your eyes and see

rusty joints they just don't act like before
and a trail of footprints leaving rust on the floor

rusty springs they wind down when you're not in motion
and the world will seem like it's wound down

wipe the rust from your face
shed the rust from your skin
clear the rust from your eyes and see

This just
jumps right out at-cha. Has a lot of timelessness to the overall sound and theme. Really well executed vox here. For greater impact with those longer notes try a little of your own vibrato. Not the mechanical effects. Gees this has me going back into, The Hollies time period.

Another great song. You seem to improve all the time with your productions. Think I'm gonna take a keeper on this one.

jumping
i chose the synth mostly due to it's bouncy nature. I did spend quite a bit of time in the final production phase. mostly taking bits here and there out. I'm not sure of what vibrato you mentioned, since there is no vibrato effect on anything. but maybe i am mechanical after all. :-)

thanks for the time to give it a spin.

Hard to believe I am first - you really have a lot going on in this piece - lots of ear candy. I really like the bridge / solo section. Interesting lyrical topic, as always with you. I think you have one of the most recognizable styles here at MacJams. Nice work, Vic - Sig

one reason for my ever changing the tracks and cutting was so different parts would come out a it more defined. so true, a must for headphone listening.

the lyrics i left for a wide varied interpretation. it can mean a lot of different things.

thanks again Sig

Great
Very nice arrangement, and although I can not put my finger on this song, I really like it. Love the vocal melodies, which almost brings a Bowie'ish level to it all. Well performed, the solo is a killer as are all guitar parts. It has a lot of small diamonds, suck as really nice drum arrangement. This is really great!

i spent quite a bit of time on this. It went through quite a big transformation as i continued searching what i was really wanting out of it. a lot of it came down to breaking it out into elements.

Awesome ...strong theme ..great structure ...
this should be on the radio ..a whole generation
should listen to this ..a very true solid style .
the use of the guitars and the bass against the
vocal just perfect ...I couldnt find the electro
sounds annoying as usual on many songs on the
radio ...you just let them speaks to your music
a true gem as always ...thnx alot for sharin !!!!

structure is the key word. there is quite a bit here that is just parts that make up the overall picture.

cool
that's a neat process for building a song that you described.
I've heard that Prince made some songs that way.
Lots of good things inside this one, the singing/melody is great, likewise the bass part and arpeggiated guitar parts.
great production as usual.
enjoyed!

building song bridges
it all was a matter of leaving options open. after adding small riffs and getting the filter sweeping synth in I figured i probably didn't need all the guitar tracks, especially in the verse and some where cut out of the chorus as well. the big thing to me was that i had more options on how to handle the bass and let it do something on its own.

thanks again for listening, i appreciate it.

Excellent work Vic
The synths work really well and the guitar work is or your usual high standard with a wonderful range of sounds and textures.

Lyrics are very good and I found them just a little unsettling and that shows the class :-)

yeah, the variety of sounds was a big thing that i was going after. originally the song was mostly acoustics and started leaving me a bit board, so out they went.

the lyrics are, i hope, vague enough for different views. actually, my perspective was, that when i play the guitar its mostly for coming up with a new song or for recording. one weekend i was just taking some time to just play some old favorites and found i was pretty rusty at playing them. hence the rust never sleeps album reference

Lovely mix Vic
Yet again you have made a clear and warm mix with great ideas and guitars. I'm interested to see you use a Presonus Firebox - I've been thinking of trying one (well a Firestudio in fact) to see if it gives me cleaner vocals. Lisa (ledeb) said it made a big difference to the way her Rode mic sounded when she moved from her old Behringer to the FB - any suggestions.comments?
Great song - love the way you use riffs to make each song stand out from the crowd.

Hi Neil
Presonus is 24 bit, so that's a good start there and the mike pre amps are clean and leave plenty of headroom. at least in my working with it. But, I also spent 3 evenings re-recording the vocals. I usually start out rusty at the beginning, since i only sing when it's recording time.

the firebox actually has more inputs then i can actually use. plus a larger headroom for volume, you don't need to crank the heck out of it to get a good signal. I'm on my 2nd box so that says a lot.

My only nit with it is that there is no on/off button. but that hasn't really been a big issue overall.

Electro Harmonix rules!
Some great guitar sounds here. The synths sort of have a hard time getting heard, that's always a difficult balance.

Enjoyed.

this box has been through a lot over the years and hasn't lost it's sound. they rarely use geranium transistors anymore. back when i bought this electro harmonix was the it effect company.

true, adding vocals and guitars did mask some of the sweeping synth, so there is a fine line of acceptance.

I
can never keep up Vic, every time I call in there are another couple of songs from you!

I love the way you have used synths here in this song mixed with your wonderful guitar sounds and playing. Not always easy as synths can have quite a powerful sound, they can sometimes 'take over' but you have managed to produce a great song with them that is again very different from your other songs.
I love the way you are always coming up with something new but still keeping the wonderful Vic Holman sound. A great achievement and I also admire how quickly you write and record songs, you are quite prolific and I'm a big fan of your music, great stuff!

Hi Bob
i spent quite a few evenings on the mixing to get a balance going. with the synths i found i had to keep cutting out alot of guitar rhythm tracks so it didn't get to thick on the overall song. I use to write and record a song a week. These days i go at a slower pace. I believe this one was 4 weeks in the works. a little bit here and there.

Thanks again Bob

i though it was worth mentioning how the song came together. it's not my usual process to change the whole concept. But I felt in the end it liberated me some ways.

the whole lyrics/vocal thing came about a week after the music was done. when i play guitar it seems it's only when i create a new song and record. so when i sat down to just play some songs i felt rusty playing them. that started the lyric idea. although it should be open enough for inturpratation

bass lines
i really like the synths and how it leads into the fuzz guitar at the intro. and i really like the bass lines - nice. i especially like the backing vocals...

i hear you about the process you describe. i've thrown away lots of stuff for the sake of the final mix. in retrospect it seems like a waste, but that's the only way to get there.

Helluva piece of gear. I'm jealous.

Lots of spooky melodies going around MJ these days. Love it. The synth parts are killer. Don't laugh, because I'm serious, but it reminds me of Taco's version of "puttin' on the ritz", which has always been a favorite of mine. Robot noises and scary melodies. Better than chocolate.
