Knock on Wood

Description
i love those old don williams/john conlee/jim croce 70's romantic ballads, so when paddy asked me to think about lyrics for a romantic tune for DVP a while back i wrote a tempie song instead. it's a grown up song, and i don't do many of those, so i'm going to send it my wife's way for Christmas. Bob says this is my "muskrat love" ha.

Eric of "lennon714" fame lent the fingerpicking and that sweet electric piano you hear in the verse.

Lyrics
God as my witness
i've lived enough to know
that i've left a trail of heartache behind me
like blood on the snow
i can't believe that i don't spook you
i can't believe you stay
the sunrise every morning surprises me
less than your sunny face
and i'm amazed by every day

don't look a gift horse in the mouth
let sleeping dogs lie
don't cast no doubts
i know i'm tempting fate
but knock on wood
and let me say
that you, might be a wonder of the world
yeah you
might be a wonder of the world
yeah you
might be a wonder of the world

you're not some
wide eyed girl just
loosed from her daddy's keep
so it beats me to tears how come you
took up with me
i can't believe that you don't quit me
i can't belive you stay
the sunrise every morning
surprises me less than your sunny face
and i'm amazed by every day

chorus

can't imagine how she'll react. Great song and really effective arrangement and performance. Your vocals sound great. Nice additions from Eric too.

Muskrat Love
This song has come a long way from the original idea and it is really cool that I am such a good friend that I got to watch it go from one stage of development to another to another, all the while still staying on course seeking the same final destination. As you might imagine, I suggested some really disruptive synthetic spasms in the middle of the song where the listener gets to take his or her breath. With a kind and compassionate, "Dude, shut up", I witnessed Craig avoid the temptation to turn this into another robot love song.

Funny thing is, I like it any way!

Eric was so in sync with this tune from the conception that I knew his guitar and piano parts would work as well as they did. You guys work well together. Every think of joining a band?

Seriously, I was just testing you to see if you'd copy me. No really, seriously, great concept for a song and another stunning vocal performance. The "sunrise/surprise" lyric is wonderful. She's gonna love it.

Was in the mood
Great time to listen to this. So direct, and mellow. Some nice vocal delivery and Eric played a Lou Reed thing behind you, which was perfect for this tune. Really tight production.

Craig, there's something about your voice, something unique and special.

eric
is the lou reed of his generation. the thing about my voice is that fair to middling quality that is so lacking in those who have great pipes. seriously though thanks man i'm glad you liked it. it's taken me a while to be comfortable enough with my voice to do a tune like this so glad it works for you.

Vocals..
.. amazing vocals again dude. So much soul in there. I get a Glen Campbell/Jimmy Webb vibe from the verses which is just sooooo cool. The chorus is pure tempie up to "but you..." when Jimmy and Glen come back for seconds.
Top stuff and lovely playing by Eric

alright!
long live tempie... very, very enjoyable to listen to as usual.
this actually reminds me of one of the seventies "Tims" eg Buckley or Hardin. or Maybe Hardin singing a Buckley tune. ;) however the spacious arrangement and subtly funky touches are pure Tempie.
anyway, great arrangement and L714's contributions are quite tasty too. thanks for the listen and d/l.

cool
i was jazzed that paddy threw that glen campbell nod out there but Tim Hadin oh boy...that's what i heard in my head as i was mowing the grass and writing this tune. i could do a tim hardin lounge act, i would love that. glad you liked it dude

Love this. Great heart on the sleeve ballad. Really dig these lyrics. This has got that Countrypolitan thing going. Love the horns and guitar arrangement. Yeah, sing it pretty, brother!

One nit: for me the "Gift horse in the mouth" section verges on parody. I appreciate your wild inventiveness and like it as a left turn, but also wish we didn't lose the ballad feel...because it's so good!

knock
glad you got the countrypolitan vibe, i've got that sound stashed away in pretty much everything i do. glad you like the lyrics too. i didn't want to go 100% ballad because i'm not a ballad guy and i wanted the song to be honest, that even though i'm singing the tune for her it's for me too, so i won't deny myself a swing through some territory that pleases me, but just for a moment, then i head back into the traditional...does that make sense?

Mr Mellow
perry como was the only one who could be mellower.

a very smooth Time/Life '70's song. I think you nailed the style really well. a poofy shirt with a medallion and chest hair exposed, plus flaired slacks would make it the total authentic package

all kidding aside, this is a great tune, sentimental lyrics plus the vocals deliver graciously.

Nicely done Craig.

this is so far apart from what i normally do that i'm trying not to hate it. i don't know if i can handle my vocals hanging over the edge like that. i want to redo it like tom waits or something.

wow
This is out of this world! I didn't know you had even posted it. I haven't checked my hotmail account in so long so who knows what other gems I'm missing. Anywho, this is such a great song. Perfect amounts of Tempie lyrics to keep it real and those tidbits that are you trademark. Those horns. Good lord. How do you make them sound like that?

Muskrat Love
Yes, I get the comparison. LOVE the refrain/chorus, and the words are fantastic. This is a terrific late night tune - very nicely done. For the inevitable production suggestion, I'd be taking a little more time with cleaning up the background noises in the soft sections. Overall a lovely post - I'm guessing your wife will love it.
