THE FIRST TIME THAT I SAW YOU

Get Flash to see this player.

Description
This started out as a song about meeting a chick that you have everything in common with, then you find out that you really don't, so you break up and forever wonder how and why it all happened the way it happened? As usual I have a sci fi twist starring Harry Dean Stanton as a teenaged Frankenboy in love with a supermodel.

For added emphasis on the beautiful chick that "looked just like me", I put the recognizable riff at the end. It is an homage to one of my favorite bands ever. Homage means blatant ripoff note for note, right?

I tried something new with my vocals - I didn't do my standard 3 vocal tracks with one panned left, one right, one in the middle. I actually spent 2 nights singing on this. Interesting how much better it sounds to me when I came back a week later after the original vocal attempt. Does this make me a big fat weirdo?

Thanks for listening.

Lyrics
THE FIRST TIME THAT I SAW YOU
I SWORE THAT YOU WERE ME
YOU STOOD THERE JUST THE WAY I WOULD
I SAW YOU NOTICE ME

YOU WERE THERE IN FRONT OF ME
MIRROR REFLECTION - YOU LOOKED JUST LIKE ME
I CAN’T BELIEVE WHAT I SEE
I STOOD THERE FROZEN AS YOU NOTICED ME

CHORUS
AND THEN YOU CHANGED THE WAY THAT YOU LOOKED
I SAW YOU CHANGE IMMEDIATELY
YOUR BODY TOOK A DIFFERENT LOOK
NOW YOU NO LONGER LOOK LIKE ME

BASS/SYNTH BREAK

CHORUS
AND THEN YOU CHANGED THE WAY THAT YOU LOOKED
I SAW YOU CHANGE IMMEDIATELY
YOUR BODY TOOK A DIFFERENT LOOK
NOW YOU NO LONGER LOOK LIKE ME

I CAN’T EXPLAIN WHAT HAPPENED THEN
AND I DON’T KNOW TO THIS DAY
I THOUGHT FOR SURE MY EYES WERE WRONG
I THOUGHT THERE WAS NO WAY

TWO DAYS WENT BY (I COUNTED THEM)
YOU DISAPPEARED AND YOU CAME BACK AGAIN
THAT’S WHEN I KNEW THAT YOU WERE ME
I STOOD THERE FROZEN AS YOU NOTICED ME

AND THEN YOU CHANGED THE WAY THAT YOU LOOKED
I SAW YOU CHANGE IMMEDIATELY
YOUR BODY TOOK A DIFFERENT LOOK
NOW YOU NO LONGER LOOK LIKE ME

THE FIRST TIME THAT I SAW YOU.....

As I recall you are a tall thin weirdo
and - the vocal lessons have paid off - it just took a little while. I love how you are able to work this area of our musical world with such authority and consistency - it's as if the eighties never stopped. Excellent song Bob. The Model. Yes.

Tall Thin Weirdo
Waitaminute- "as if the eighties never stopped?"

Thanks bud - I'm trying to be a little more careful singing, not saying that I'm abandoning my sloppy vocal style, just taking a different approach to making the vocals fit into the song. The vocal parts are the hardest for me to make sense of.

The Model. Yes.

Strange and cool
I can only imagine what this would sound like if I had pipes like yours. I can't deny my passion for synthesizer sounds. The best synth sounds were from 20 years ago or more, so that might explain my retro sound. That's a big compliment, by the way.

Thanks for the listen.

Walkman
I still like the cassette!

I'm always trying to make the guitar sound (which is my bass running through a RAT pedal) marry the synth sounds. To me, they belong together. I've always loved bands like Tubeway Army and Ultravox that used beefy, earthy guitars with that synthesizer sound that was almost void of any human element.

Thanks for listening. I always look forward to your comments.

you're laying in some very cool hooks on the synths. I really like how you layer them all together to create something larger than the parts (ie..no heavy chords filling or washing over everything). Gives it a clean cutting alt pop sound. You vox sounds great btw.

No Heavy Chords
Thanks John. Your comment means a lot to me because I know you have great ears (seen pictures). I tried to do some different things on this song. One thing specifically was to try to strip the song of garbage filled tracks. I went for a cleaner sound than I normally do.

Thanks for your valuable comments.

Catchy. Quirky synths add to the "weird science" vibe. Sounds chosen work well together, and everything sits nicely in the mix. Like that bass. Credit card pick eh? Have to try that.

Weird Science
I'm 46 years old, so I'm not immune to Weird Science!

I prefer the quirky synths and I try for a simple and sweet bass line to anchor it all.

Email me your address and I will mail you a pick that you could use as a template for future rock moments.

Thanks for listening Dave. It helps me so much with the songs to come, whether or not you realize it.

Fall In Love With Your Sister
Oh Vic..... You're my most favorite weirdo!!

Wow, thanks for the excellent advice. Close and comfy. I just listened to the mix spread wide and it sounds ugly and really disconnected. Normally, that's something I strive for....

Thanks Vic. I appreciate your advice so much. You and very few others see where I'm headed and always help me realize I was going South on my Westward journey. I'm always grateful.

Das role model
Stripping it down, and letting it breathe are the true mark of the man who knows what he's doing and doing it well. You totally own the 80s.

I really like the lyrics in the chorus.

The singing lessons went well, obviously but what happened to german accent lessons ?

German Accent Lessons
For me, the synthesizer rich music of the 80s disappeared way too soon. I just love synth sounds and can't find a reason to stop using them.

I wasn't sure what people would think of the lyrics to this song. They sounded terrible in my German Accent.

Thanks CJ!

Bauhaus
.. if they'd had a sense of humour. Love that 80's vibe Bob, cracking guitar stabs, great vocal treatment and above all a sense of fun. I love those "Amiga" like synths - it's like an 80's krautrock band collided with the demo-scene and Gary Numan came to tidy up.
Brilliant.

Bauhaus Comedy Act
Thanks Paddy - I actually think that Bauhaus was a funny bunch of lads. People misunderstood their music as being only dark and "gothic" without realizing the humor (the dark humor) that lies beneath the dark soil. Think about it, Bela Lugosi's Dead - That was a joke despite it being a brilliant 10 minute gothic hit.

That's my thought anyway.

Krautrock Yes! Numan Yes!!

Thanks Paddy!

Thanks Anne.

I'm trying harder to make the vocals sound, uh, normal, rather than so offensively difficult to listen to. I'm not growing up or anything, just trying to do something a little different so people don't start saying, "oh great, another 5X song with that same vocal misery again and again and.... blah blah blah...."

Buzzy, bizarre and beautiful - That's my new mantra.

Plain Drums
Hey Jason, thanks for the comments. I "modeled" my drum pattern after a very famous electronic band that attracted me to their music because of it's very emotionless computer sound. Very repetitive, simple and void of soul. I made a separate midi track for each drum sound so I could control the individual sounds better than having a single track and trying to make all of the sounds EQ. This is a relatively new technique I'm using and I'm finding it to be perfect for my electro-bang-a-tin-can-with-a-spoon sound I seek!

the musical equivalent of readi whip
love paddy's comment about this sounding like Bauhaus if Bauhaus had a sense of humor. right on. already told you how much i like the vox but i'll tell you again, i like the vox. great concept too. i have a theory that everything we look at and like we feel that way because it reminds us of an image of ourselves that we find attractive. but then sometimes we change our minds about what we want to be when we grow up. why do i like you again? Anyway if this tune came in aerosol packaging i'd eat it directly from the star shaped spout and then i'd huff the can till i died.

Hook!
As simple as they hook is, it's brilliantly played. A bass through a rat you say? That's big, fat, weird and wonderful!

The vocals seem a lot more cohesive than usual. The hard work paid off.

Hook
THE FIRST TIME THAT I SAW YOU
YOU SCARED ME WITH YOUR HOOK...

My big, fat arsenal of sound is typically my bass running through the RAT and my simple rusty hooks.

I realized when singing last night that I don't always have to go with the very first take. I tried a few tracks and kept the best two adding a slight chorus on one of them, kept them both panned center, dropped the volume on the lesser of the two and added a single track of some higher pitched "harmonies" also centered and slightly chorused, reverbed and a bit of echo on the end. That is the secret to my "cohesive" vocals, thanks for asking.... Oh wait.... you didn't ask, I just rambled.

Thanks Pete

Thought I'd take a break from helping Mr. Eko build his church to listen to this tune. It's like "The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face" grew up, felt a trembling in it's knickers and read a few social philosophy books. Those synth lines are really, really cool. Good job, mate.

Chilling little track, Bob. The vocal is great but kinda cold, which gives the song a nice bit of distance. The song has a very strict beat, which to my ears gives it, along with the keys and guitar, a nice little 'tubeway' sound... its almost as if the paint's peeling offa your walls!

this is great. your voice sounds frikkin good. and did I hear you do a little major/minor chord thing in there. you getting fancy on me? i loved reading how the guitar is actually a bass, i used to do it the other way around (no bass, but i think i can make my tele sound like one - you got better results than I did). we need to do another collab soon.
