Description
Not as much a holiday song as it is a winter song, but it's as close as I'm probably going to get.

This is one I actually wrote last year, but just couldn't get going. I'd recorded a rough draft of the song and just never finished. This is a complete rework except for the drums and bass. This is also the first music I've been able to make in a month because of an injury to my hand. Still not completely up to speed, but it felt good to be able to play a guitar somewhat again. (It's like the old joke "Doctor, when my hand gets better, will I be able to play the piano?" "Sure," says the doctor. "Great! I was never able to play it before!" *ba dum ching*)

Anyway, while it's not necessarily a holiday tune, I still managed to pack plenty of my trademark holiday melancholy into it.

So, enjoy!

Lyrics
Winter Star

©2008 Joseph Gurner

Silent night, lonely night
Waiting for another day to end

One more drink, then I hit the road
there’s no place I gotta be

I’ve been lost for too many years
I’ve lost count of my wrong turns
The path ahead is cold and dark
So shine your light, Winter star

Lead me home, Winter star
Some how, I’ve lost my way
shine your light on the road ahead
Winter star, lead me home

Silent night, cold night
Seeking warmth in another soul

one more laugh, another smile
There’s no place that I’d rather be

I’ve been lost for too many years
never wanted to be found
The path behind me is cold and dark
You shine on me, Winter star

Lead me home, Winter star
Some how, I’ve lost my way
shine your light on the road ahead
Winter star, lead me home

I wasn’t looking for a way back home
home wasn’t really there
So I wandered in the wilderness
Looking for a lonely face

to be my Winter star

Lead me home, Winter star
Some how, I’ve lost my way
shine your light on the road ahead
Winter star, lead me home

I knew that joke was coming :-) melancholy yes, but still full of warmth and shades of the season. Great job on the layered voices.

what a trademark!
But, yes the holiday doldrums hit us all at one time or another. I love your vocals on this. They fit the song really well.

Winter
Great opening, dragged me right in! This is epic. Great melodies and arrangement throughout, yours is naturally laid back performing the melody with precision - with the surprising addition of backing vocals which I have not heard a lot from you before. The refrain has many layers, and is really good, powerful. The guitar is adding another layer of melodies, and is very well performed. This is really good Joeseph!

If Crazy Horse....
...was working on their cover of 'Closing Time', it might end up somewhere along here....

One neat-o, Neil Youngish chorus there, Joe.... You do the whole yearning thing like nobody's business....

good writing
i liked this, joseph. the line "I’ve lost count of my wrong turns" stood out for me. solid singing and good harmony. i could go for a little less busyness in the music - cuz the vocal melody is fine and strong enough to be the focus for me. i apologize for getting to your music so late in the game. glad i did!
