Description
Haven't had much time for music lately, and I have some personal stuff going on right now; this was a pleasant diversion today. First song I've done on my own in awhile. This is a long, sad, space-rock song about a break-up that happens when 2 people are just fundamentally different. Was thinking of a friend when I wrote it.

Tried out my recent no-brainer synth purchases (XILS3 and Ultra Analog). Went with shoegazer as it is heavy on the "melodic sound effects" i am so fond of.

Lyrics
he never left his house
he never spoke
she couldn't live like that
so she went away

last night he reached for her
he called her name
he tried to speak with her
but it's just too late

the circle comes around
many have been broken
we all love in our own way
you say you need a friend
say you can't remember
being lonely

he passed her on the street
she said hello
he tried to make amends
she just smiled at him

things seemed to go so well
just like before
but then he saw the ring
and he knew she was gone

the circle comes around
many have been broken
we all love in our own way
you say you need a friend
say you can't remember
being lonely

he felt he wasn't needed
he lost his reason to exist
what could he have done
to keep her happy, make her stay
then he saw her smiling
she was happy and so was he
if someone else is with her
and makes her happy, then so is he

the circle comes around
many have been broken
we all love in our own way
you say you need a friend
say you can't remember
being lonely

thanks so much. i was feeling like the vocal mix could be a lot better, but had to get to work (and had an itchy trigger finger). there originally was a guitar part, but it didn't do anything for me, so it's on the cutting room floor now. thanks so much for the listen.

So great to hear a new solo piece
you create such a complete aural and emotional experience - while at the same time stretching out on some new toy. This great Michael - the watery synth effect on the chorus is perfect and the special chord (like my tech talk?) that hangs on lonely (must be a diminished something or other) gives it that Beatles sophistication. Fab.

thought about throwing this one to the POD, but I needed to blow off some steam in a fast and furious manner. the new synths are fun (you can still get them at audio midi for next to nothing). the XILS3 is way recommended (think of those old videos for Roxy Music with Eno just plugging in patch cords). That chord is just a minor chord, with some accidental stuff in the background making it sound intentionally clever (no such luck). thanks a bunch for the drive by.

Hey Michael
First of all production note: this is crystal clear (as in the seperation and placement of all the voices and instruments) - I think its the 'sharpest' sounding thing I have heard you do. Great!!
The song: I agree with the beatles/flyod comments - but I think this is so much more than that. Great melody and great arrangement.

Excellent use of time and space my friend

thanks so much Bryn
i used a lot of 3rd partys tuff on this one, and some instruments I made in EXS. the piano is an upright by Imperfect Samples, the Mellotron is a $29 cheapie by Sonivox that I threw a hi/lo pass filter on, the dulcitone is by a company I can't remember, but they also make the only ship's piano I have ever found. everything else is the UA and the XILS3. thanks so much for your kind words.

First of all, and kind of off topic....
I love that graphic....

Great song... I'm really getting impressed with slow tempos lately and how hard they can be to get right.... This one sounds like it just naturally IS right, not like you had to work to get it right....

Has some Lennonish qualities, and some echoes of Chris Bell in the melody and vocal quality.... Well written lyrics....

Ed
michael2 said 2799 days ago (December 18th, 2009)
haha
it is a great graphic huh? i find it hard to resist the allure of working on a slow song, for some reason they just speak to me. john lennon and chris bell (more so than big star) are 2 huuge influences, so thanks very much.

thanks a bunch, very kind. this one actually started out as "what would peter gabriel do in 1981?" and then turned into "what would happen if John Lennon was in OMD?" and the rest is history. I think I'm going to go work on a cover of OMDs "souvenir" now.

i love this. a real headphone feast. those watery synths are really cool. sorry things are tough for you right now. i've realized for myself that sometimes, when i'm in turmoil of some kind and looking for a song of some sort to soothe my soul - sometimes there's just not something exactly right on my iPod. and what I end up doing is creating something myself. that process of creation usually helps me release some of whatever gooberish stuff is bottled up inside. anyway...enough outta me. this is beautiful. i hope it helped in some small way. it helped me!

Listened to this at work and now on my second listen at home on phones. What a lovely song. Love the pop ballad against the undertow of trippy synths. Feel the ache and longing in the slow tempo. Just really well written, played and sung.

best song i've heard in a while
so well produced i could easily have bought this off the rack. Loved the synth-warble and the chord progressions. liked how the vocals and the piano matched each other. I also thought it had hinds of the previously mentioned musicians, but definitely it's own thing. downloaded. but I would have paid 99ยข on itunes if it was an option. Thanks, Brian.

thanks man. it's all MIDI except for the bass and my voice. actually wrote the chord progression the other night when playing piano for my daughter. pretty simple chords, just changed the inversions halfway through each chord (think it makes it seem like I play better than I do). yu are a very kind commentator, thanks so much. now where's your next MIDI-fest?

gorgeous
First of all, I love the chorus. What a wonderful progression. The lyrics are direct and unvarnished, which I like. The synths inject a wonderful dreamy spaciness to the track without owning too much real estate, a hard balance to attain, well done. Nice movements from fullness to space and restraint, adding that delicious tension. Finally, the mix is perfect, I mean really. especially the drums and percussion, just lovely.

Beautiful stuff.
Really like the vox.
Such an excellent mix.
Like Sigur Ros but with much more melodic direction..and that last chord on the chorus is brilliant.
I recognize that circle from somewhere.
Is it from Osho or the I ching or something like that?
Anyway

this is one of the best I've heard in a while... vocally and melodically beautiful, this is really one to be proud of...
pretty perfect actually, it's hard to single anything out although the "bubbly synths" are obviously cool. the "clever chord" stood out for me too. and I don't even like Roger Waters or OMD that much!

With a new Lennon film out this week in Oz, this fits well into my head at the moment. You have a real mastery of simple melody - a very good thing! You manage to write memorable songs without having to resort to any tricks or fancy footwork. Very impressive post M2.

Wo, when did we get that Genre? How cool. Reminds me of Paul Simon's "Old Friends" and Ginsberg's navel gazing on Johnny Carson.

Such a sweet John Lennon feel, clean and transparent, straight thru dreaming into something real that few of us can actually touch but all want to feel. Have you ever seen the documentary on Henry Darger, "In The realm of the Unreal"? Reminded me of that. Its a free stream on Netflix if you have that service. Totally dig the more emotional aspects of this track, the dramatic moments, the sense of real life nipping at the fringes of song, of behind-the-scenes yet can't-really-communicate aspect to this. Very nice.

A Fantastic, Holistic Umbrella of Doom!
Man, you are talented at presenting a whole package that carries a mood. I can only compare the holistic umbrella (or pall?!!!) you cast over this piece to the "A Ghost Is Born" album by Wilco, a few albums (and lineups) back. REALLY you need to hear that album.

I need to hear more... feel free to memo me to suggest your favorites to me, a guy whose sensibilities are mostly guitar-driven. (The no-guitar mix here didn't alienate me one bit, this is a fantastic arrangement.)
