I Believe

Description
The genesis of this song is worth some back story. I wrote a gospel tune, "I'm Pluggin' In" as an excersise in form. I'm not a believer but I like the gospel genre. I played it for some folks including a pretty doctrinaire Christian. He admonished me for playing something "I didn't really believe". I thought he was full of crap and told him so. But it got me thinking, ok what do I believe?
This is still a work-in-progress..still test driving it at various tempos, with more or less syncopation, etc.

Lyrics
I Believe

I believe in the mystery of a billion stars in the galaxy
The swirling constellations and nighttime animations
Dreamers and lovers who ponder the whole universe
The whole universe

And I embrace the human race and the dignity of wizened face
Despite our contradictions and self-destructive fictions
There’s still a noble spirit, and I hear it in voices of children
And I see it your face

I don’t believe in angels
I don’t believe in ghosts
I’ve knelt before the altar
But wouldn’t eat the host

I’m not a true believer
I’m cynical at times
But simple acts of kindness
Can sometimes make me cry

I believe in the power of love, not the kind that comes from above
But seeps up from the ground and bubbles like a fountain
If faith can move mountains than the world keeps spinnin’ on love
Keeps spinnin’ on love

Wanna hear my name called
Whispered on your lips
Marvel at baby’s fingertips

Speak my mind,
Not be afraid
Count my gold
In these friends I’ve made

I believe in the mystery of a billion stars in the galaxy
The swirling constellations and nighttime animations
Dreamers and lovers who ponder the whole universe
The whole universe

And those lyrics
make you (in my eyes) more 'Christian' than a lot of 'Christians'.... Lovely words that the guy you mentioned should have been able to read as worshipful, if only he'd been the 'God Fearing' man he purported to be (some are truly blinded by 'the light'). This is a great song and beautifully performed, regards M

Echoes of 'Lord Of The Starfields'....
...and I get it about asking that question, "What DO I believe?" I've been thinking of writing a book called, "What I Think I Know", and I think it's coming from that same place....

I really like the guitar playing on this, and I also like your singing... Both sit nicely to left and right in the headphones... And the song itself works for me.... It could get clumsy with such long lines and being at the start a sort of 'exposition' song, but it bops along with lightness and melody...

Is there a bass in there? If there is, it might benefit from another dB or two, or a bit of compression... And just because I listened to this after listening to several other MacJams pieces this morning, I'd say the whole mix could come up a dB or two or take some mastering compression... The natural tone of the mix itself is really good....

Happily downloaded....

Thanks for the comments and careful listen, Ed. I really appreciate your great feedback.

Bass is synth and pretty wimpy. It could use a boost. And overall volume is a tad low.

Thanks for the reference to the Cockburn song. He's always been a fave, but I didn't know that particular song. Cheers!

yeah he was full of crap. but hey it worked out because it prompted you to produce this. and this is great. the composition is solid but the vocals are stellar. great backups too, really hear shades of Don McLean in this tune.

I don't think that a song must embody your own beliefs. I think it's good that you went through the exercise too. "I'm pluggin in" is done very well. But I would like to encourage you that there is a God who loves you deeply and he is very accessible. Just plug in! (HA HA). "I believe" is also very nicely done by the way. I really enjoy your simple folky style. I so relate to this type of sound.

john, your song construction is so sophisticated around simple tunes....a real talent. and again i marvel at how succinct your lyrics are and how they say so much in such a short time. 'but i didn't eat the host' made me laugh out loud...a) because it's such a gem...and b) because of all the jesus people who might be 'offended'. what do you believe - how about what bertrand russell said; remember humanity...forget the rest.

these lyrics are terrific
and now I know how to pronounce the word "wizened." I also love the bridge with the angels/ghosts, altar/host couplets. I agree with Feter that this soung seems great as is and pretty "done."

Oh brother you did it this time
excellent set of lyrics and a great response to the challenge set before you. This production sounds really wonderful - but this really could go in many directions - it's a powerful song.

A super song! I think you've put into words what a lot of people think. The easy-going tune fits like a glove and the gentle harmonies set it all off in a fine arrangement. I could say more...
Thanks for letting us all hear.

good for you
beautiful songwriting. love the lyrics. wonderful guitar playing and harmonies. for the feel of the song, the tempo you played it at was right, but the lyrics are a little wordy and seem to get squished sometimes so maybe a slightly slower tempo would work a little better. but man, this is awesome.

John
I normally concentrate on music and production when I'm listening critically. After hearing the first line I went to your lyrics .... and stayed there. Your sentiments resonate very true with me.
Getting back to the music and the production though, I can find no nits - lovely guitar work, well recorded, and some very capable vocals.
I like this a lot.

LOL
The I believe, I don't believe thing... I live in the bible belt and often it is a notch way to tight for my taste. The people around here can really get on the high horse and then turn around and commit a rash of sins and not have a second thought. Anyway loved this.

I've been singing and playing since the age of fourteen when my brother Paul was working his way through the Beatle book and needed someone to play with. From Paul I learned to fingerpick, play barre chords, and to sing the melody while he sang harmo... [see more]
