Description
Last summer I heard of a really good friend passing away, He died of complications of esophageal cancer and he was beating it... He died in the operating room. I got the news the same day that Michael Jackson had died. I was, 'Who is Michael Jackson?' Charles loved to play boogie Woogie Piano and did so whenever he went to hospitals, clinics and Treatmet centers that had a piano. I knew Charles since high school and we were roommates at one point in college. While I was at his memorial service, I ran into a lot of friends from those days long ago. Johnny and I used to be in band together in Jr, Hi and High School and occasionally jammed together in Austin a time or two when I would go for a visit. He die about 2 months ago while he was setting up for a gig there. When he died he was doing what he loved. Today, I heard about Dean. I knew Dean since 6th grade. I was the guy who turned him on to his first joint. After that he fell into a long line of addictions and was so far gone that after high school his parents had no idea where he was. I know that I should not feel responsible but instead of saying, Hey, Dean ya wanna get high? I could have said, Dean, this really isn't for us, is it? It's amazing how when peoples paths cross just how much influence we can have. Today, I was moving my piano back into the living room where we had pulled the carpet to expose the oak wood floors. Thinking about Dean and my other two friends who have died this year, I sat down and started to play. I pulled the mic from the studio area and recorded this. I was feeling rather reflective today. The piano was a gift from my grandfather to his new bride. It is a Wing and Son Grand Upright piano made in 1909. That piano turned 100 this year. This has been a year of bitter sweet. While I was cleaning the sound board I found an old key to the mantle clock that we used to have. My brother has that clock now. I wrote him today and told him i found it. I think it's been missing for 40 years.

another day
this reminds me of being a kid...locked in the piano room and fiddling about instead of practicing...and wondering how long it will take for the next hour to pass. i like that you can hear your fingers on the keys.

ANDY - this is BEAUTIFUL!!! I had NO idea that on top of your other gifts, you're also a terrific pianist! I hear the "mandolin felts" you were telling me about yesterday - very cool sound, how special that you recorded on your 100 year old piano. a beautiful, reflective improvisation - thank you for sharing it with us!

Music is about feeling
Just about feeling some times. And this does it. I've been in this place too, and it's the music that comes out of being in this place that often means the most to me in the long run. This is such raw emotion that I don't think you really need ask for more out of music making.
Oh and I could go on about technical stuff, but I'll just say that the piano sounds wonderful and the recording is pretty sweet, roomy but not too much so, intimate but with a nice sense of the space inside the piano.

Wow...
Very organic, it flows but keeps me listening to its solemn twists and turns, thinking introspectively about the lives around me... and then the end as it speeds up and then resolves was a satisfying conclusion. I love the old piano sound, so nicely done. And this brings me to a serious question... is there an instrument you DON'T play? Wow.

Andy - this is such a moving piece of music
my heart goes out to you as you reflect the losses of the past year. Your playing is wonderful and immediate - I like how there is a distinct turning point at around 3:15 that seems like an affirmation.
I saw the film A Serious Man yesterday. I highly recommend it.

Sincere gratitude
to all. I didn't really know how the news throughout this year effected me until I sat down and played the piano. I wished that I could get it right and fix all the musical anomalies to make this work. Much like how I wish I could have been a better friend or made more of an effort or... but such is life. I am amazed and rather pleased that you think it is a significant piece. I wanted only to make it real for my friends and to let them know in a way that I never did that they passed through my life with my love and friendship.

Wow, Andy....
Reading the story behind the song while listening made me feel it even more. The bittersweet feeling of having lifelong friends and hearing about their departure from this earth, very powerful emotions here. And the fact you're playing on a 100 year old piano makes it even more so. I liked the little excitement at the end- it replaced the melancholy with hope. :-)

Beautiful
Even without your description, this is a beautifully moving and melancholy piece. You can almost hear the character that has surely built up over the years of the piano. I disagree with your comment that this is not a great piece. It has heart and emotion that really shines through and that's what makes greta music.

I think
Jim summed this up for me in his comment above. I can really relate to the sense of loss you're feeling about old friends Andy - unfortunately, the older we get, the more it happens. It's good that you can encapsulate your feelings like this - so meaningful without words.

An improvisation
born from inspiration and reflection. There is some light-hearted playing but also a great deal of regret, I am guessing. I'll play this a few more times. You are something, Andy. I'm so sorry for the losses. Thank you.

Sweet Sorrow
As with any great piece of music my first reaction is to ask this of myself, "Why bother even playing music when clearly you will never be as good as this?" followed by emulation. Great song Andy.

Thanks Andy...
for the reflective piece of music. The type of composition that gives me pause... a good thing. And thanks for the background info. I too am witnessing a dear friend struggle with cancer (not looking good). I'm afraid that will become more of a common occurrence in the years ahead.

Real nice piano playing, btw.

well first of all
the quality of this recording is excellent for just pulling a mic out of your studio and setting it up next to a 100 year old piano. i immediately was able to get a picture of you in my mind, bent intently over the keys, letting your feelings flow out through your fingertips. this music is full of emotion and all the wonderful imperfections of improvised heartsongs. i especially love that you left the end noises on here. a perfect closure to this bittersweet goodbye. beautiful andy.

serendipitous...
Sounded like the piano was longing for a player to let his or hers feelings out on it, and in turn help the player express oneself emotionally in music. I believe that...

The fate of others have connected you with friends from the past and that's not a mistake. I love what raw emotions can produce such as this piece has. When I was little girl seeing mother play so beautifully, it was only right that I inherit her piano and play it to give tribute to her, like you have with this contemplative piece. I’m so a fan now :) patty
