The Devil Beat Me to Her

Description
Since my last song was about my daughter, I figured it was time to say something about her mother, who as it happens, is one helluva cook...

Lyrics
The devil that you know can be your only friend
But when you open up, can't close that door again
The devil you don't can be your enemy
But there's something about eternity

Tell the truth now, what you cooking
Tell the truth now, what you doing
Tell the truth, I know you're cooking up, cooking up something with that man

I saw her in the garden / "Miss, can beg your pardon?"
I meant to make a bargain / But the devil beat me to her

The game was done and over / We drank each other sober
I asked her to come over / But the devil beat me to her
The devil beat me to her

I took her out for dinner / Though neither were beginners
Soon I wed my little sinner / But the devil beat me inner

From Addison to Irving / Smoky Mountains undeserving
Was maddening, unnerving / That the devil beat me to her
The devil beat me there...

(I love her but I can't save us alone)

The devil that you know... [repeat from intro]

Tell the truth now, what you cooking.. [repeat from intro]

Influences...
Thanks Fete. I have to admit that as I got the tracks down it occurred to me that the influences, the sound, is like: a hallucination of early Joe Walsh in a "lost 1970 jam session" with Led Zeppelin during Zep's recording of the acoustic side B of the 3rd album.

BTW the "her" in this tune's my wife. (Daughter was the last one!) Thanks again!

Outstanding Post Bro,
Love the way you finished this one up. Bass line sounds nice and punchy, drums are about as good as it gets, and the slide is to die for. I even love the way the vox came out !

And yes, I can hear the Joe Walsh influence in this, but also a little Charlie Daniels too.

Great track Bob, I love it.

HAW-HAW! "EVEN" the vox!
Thanks, Big Bro. When you say "even" the vox is good here, we should let people know that you and I have had long conversations about my vox-phobia and I've decided to NOT solely be an instrumentalist.

But Charlie Daniels? What you smokin?! I still say I'm clearly ripping-off Joe Walsh's vox from the James Gang and "The Smoker You Drink..." era. And on slide, I grew up jamming to Zep, and learned slide from Page's simple, distinctive riffs.

Vic, I actually thought AFTER I was done that the lyrics could have used just that twist -- where I somehow "beat the Devil out of her." But that just comes out so wrong.

No dobro
Scott, thanks. It's not a Dobro; it's my plywood Yamaha special I got for my 10th birthday in 1969. I was noodling around and decided to "pinhole" it. I left just that one guitar take in, doubling it and overdriving the right channel more. (Likewise I doubled the vox and added a more OD-ed version on the left.)

there's something about this i really like....it sounds like you have a sitar in there. i mean i know you haven't...but yeah...it's really guru hallucinogenic. great bass....great instrumental variation. i like the empty spaces too. top notch finish. so i'm thinking sgt pepper meets kula shaker meets robin trower. great production. top song. well done.

Bob6stringer said 2825 days ago (December 28th, 2009)
Lots to say about your comment:
--"guru hallucinogenic" is a fun term... I was actually considering putting "psycho-acoustic" in my intro notes!
--RE: "great instrumental variation" and "empty spaces," I worked hard on both despite this being a tune with very few tracks: one acoustic guitar, (doubled and FX-ed), some vox, a bass and then string and drum loops. I did try to make it varied and accidentally left-out some little vocal bits and effects that were in the mix, but got turned-down somehow. (For example, the word "Miss" in the "beg your pardon" line.)
--Any mention of Robin Trower has to get a special thanks. I played Bridge of Sighs 'till daylight shone through the grooves on the vinyl. Ah, to re-live the Seventies, when guitars ruled the world.

Cleaner Booms!
Thanks, Mark. I'm always amazed when someone with your guitar aptitude shines favor on my tightrope walks between taste and showing-off my limited chops. As for the bass, it's a huge thing to use a real one here and on the last tune. I previously used guitar and octave-lowering effects that resulted in awful-fidelity "bass" parts. On Joe: I was such a huge fan of pre-eagles Joe... he was under-appreciated in the 70s.

Hot stuff!
The music, I mean... :) This is a great pleasure to listen to, and yes I hear the Zep-slide, really sweetly done here and has your own crisp style. Vox are great, and the "telephone" EQ seems to work, and you're hitting all the notes nicely. Great work there! And I think I get the allusion to the garden and the devil, as my wife is also just a stunning cook... and the song's a great compliment to any dish.

I can't let your great compliments pass without saying thanks, Eduard, and acknowledging your wife's cooking, too. I met my wife in a beer garden -- Murphy's Bleachers, next to Wrigley Field, after a Chicago Cubs game, but "garden" definitely works better for the song, as you point out.

drank ourselves sober
the acetate recording booth production in the intro is absolutely killer, and the cool thing is that the vibe it creates stays with the song, even after the sound widens out. also love the lazy bass line and the phrasing with the space between couplets, creates a very nice 70's southern rock type groove while staying true to the blues structure. And the playing is terrific. really cool tune dude, like a down home version of the black keys.

Burning lyrics
What a great idea for lyrics. I dig the whole "at the crossroad" devil feel, which works so well as a concept with the lyrics. "We drank each other sober " and "the devil beat me inner" are just great. I enjoyed the track a ton. I thought the "tell the truth now" section could have been used more to break up the main verses. But totally dug the whole idea.

Bob6stringer said 2809 days ago (January 13th, 2010)
I'm digging the feedback
Thanks, Tobin. I struggled with adding more "tell the truth" midway through, and might revisit it; ScoFugate surprised me with some live Ludwigs to replace the loops. A third option is not an "or" but an "and:" Do both. That is, I could contort the blues riff (probably without the vocal) into the major, folkier "bumper" section to foreshadow and tease the blues riff's return, but not beat the devil out of it. Too hypothetical to imagine? If not, your opinion's welcome.

This was going to be a blues song, but my effort to make it original turned into... this. I may try again, net time dusting-off my old Teisco Del Rey. The neck is gnarled, but the slide won't care; the strings still go in a straight line from bridge to peg.

Sorry Bob, but it's taken me ages to get here for this one. Leo Kottke guitar sounds - must be the pinhole mic making it sound like a 12 string. I'm enjoying the bass track - I never think of you as a bassist, but the bass here is really well played and inventive. This really moves Bob.
Glad I eventually got here.

Love the slide. Great mix of traditional blues sections with more melodic parts. The fade-in is such a simple and effective devise. I also like the transition from a delta blues vocal sound to a more modern sound at :16. Great melodic bass line (very McCartneyish). The way you open up the bass at 3:50 is great (love the octave jump). I love the power of the riff at :40. Works well the "tell the truth" lyric. Oh, yes, I am the male Dinah Shore.
Haha.. re: that slow vibrato, I was going for a male Dinah Shore... Anthony Newley ... Joe Walsh, don'cha know. The first few lines were iffy. RE: the "climbing" strings, that makes the whole thing for me... they spooked me one night while I was dozing off, in a REM state, listening to an earlier mix.

But where's the criticism? I'll add some: As a singer, I'm not a bad guitar player. Kind of like having a face for radio. The first intro vocals are shaky, shaky. From there, I got comfortable in the quirky vibrato, it was something I never tried before.
