How do y'udu?

Description
Nothing serious. I'm banging on my birthday present.

An Udu is an African claypot drum. (A similar instrument exists in India, called a Ghatam.) You can slap the pot, but if you hit the hole in the side you get a really low boom. "The voice of the ancestors", according to some. This particular drum was made in Austin, by Keith Glowka.

nice present!
And attractive glaze on it too... and what a great collection of flutes behind you too, though I do see some empty pegs for more later :-) I also like the Escher-like interlocking mat above your head... definitely looks like a mathematician's pad, which is definitely meant as a compliment!

Glaze
I believe the colour of the glaze comes from slapping "natural ingredients" on the drum when it goes into the kiln. *cough* horse manure *cough*.

You're right about the empty pegs. I still "need" a couple more flutes.

Oh, the Escher-like composition is a small quilt, made by me mum. Appropriate indeed, in my abode.

How do y'udu?
Fine thanks, and you? Seriously, sounds pretty cool. I'll be interested to see how you work it into the mix of your new compositions.

let me get this
straight... a drum....with a hole in it...made from clay...are you sure it's not a monophonic bass occarina and you may just have made a little teeny mistake in the playing technique...all though it does sound good...

Yes
That must be it. A monophonic bass occarina. How could I be so mistaken.....

Lovely
Takes me right back to my years in India where I saw and heard some good clay pots' players.

Great tone and fine slapping.

Merci ! And best wishes, Vic
for the year to come.

Do you udu?
Well, I guess you do udu. And quite well, toodu! To udu is a fun thing to do.
But seriously, it does sound like you're having a lot of fun with your new toy. I'm branching into adenkum,(gourds) myself right now. But this has a really great sound, too, that you already seem to have gotten a grasp of.

Sounds very cool, Vic....
You really hear the ceramic-ness in the slaps and the deep bonk from the side... I hope this instrument reappears in other tracks at other times, along with other instruments....

Excellent post
I love seeing the picture of you - and imagining how much fun you're having. Great performance and I like the subtle enhancements you've added. Did you grab and sustain that last bass tone - or did it carry naturally?

Bass note
That sustained bass note, as well as the opening wash, are courtesy of a christmas present, the Synplant synthesizer. The udu bass notes are impressive, but not _that_ impressive.

Very nuanced
This is really cool. I love this sort of thing... there is so much you can learn about other cultures through just their rhythms! I have a claypot too, but it isnt designed as an instrument, but it somehow sounds ok. Also, going to have to look into this synplant synthesiser.... dang, my birthday too far away though.
