Description
Thanks to Andy this really beat my expectations. His playing is so emotional and inspired that he drove me to places I had only glimpsed in the past. I created a very basic sketch of the song with drums, bass, and rhythm guitar - keeping it as simple as possible just to lay out the structure and changes. I sent this to Andy and asked him to go wherever he wanted and let loose on it.
Well he certainly did that - and when I got his file back I realized that I had mistakenly deleted the GB file of the backing tracks. As a result I had no choice but to rebuild the song from scratch - but now I had the privilege of following his lead. The result was the opportunity to hopefully create something with more engagement and exchange than might have otherwise happened. The only loops are the DOD drums.
Thanks Andy - and thanks to all of you for a great year. Looking forward to this new one we've just entered.

The title refers to Robert Wyatt - the original drummer of The Soft Machine.
The artwork is by my wife - Lisa Beck

Andy impresses me more and more with everything I hear him do. I'd like to think that the community has lit a fire in him that we all get to share now. He certainly has gotten around and brought a lot of fine work to a variety of songs. I'm really glad to have the opportunity to work with him.
I'll give Lisa your regards.

Grooving jazz rock
Lots to be enjoyed here. Great basic groove, and plenty of cool soloing, even bits of bass solo.

I was happy how the bass came out - hope it's not too loud. This has been a year for learning how to play the bass - not a steady instrument for me.

absolutely great
Andy's sax playing reminds me a bit of Jan Garbarek's style. What an enjoyable piece of funk jazz. I also love the rhythm/beat changes that appear at surprising moments. I'm always a sucker of the dialogue that spontaneously happens between the different instruments in this kind of music. And here's it's no exception. Enjoyed it to bits and pieces. Splendid work.

then again I've heard Andy bring whatever a song needs to the table. I appreciate that you dug the abrupt changes - I was on the fence for a while. Thanks for dropping by.

2010 Year of the Bud
That reminds me that the same thing happened with my tracks for Tikipod and as a result I had do them over, with what I think are better results. There is probably some element of truth about having to let go... and it is a good thing too Bud, because the guitar leads and statement/answers are like we are in a little dive and we're getting this eye-contact thing going. The collaborative process that you set in place and your credibility as a musician and just being a great guy is the reason why this still worked- even after the deleted files. I am your saxguy, Bud. You call, I'll haul.

If I get going here Andy
they'll tell us to go get a room.
This was so much fun to do and really came very readily once I listened to your sax a few twenty times and got a sense of what you were up to. I love those conversational moments that occur. If I were a better musician it would be easy and likely overdone - but rather than being forced - there's a certain grace at work sometimes. Speaks a lot to the natural flow of your playing. I love it when you make the sax laugh.

It really wasn't so bad. I had intended to redo my parts to work with Andy's track - just didn't expect to rebuild the drums. That was the biggest challenge - but also a big pay off. Next time I think I'll just ask Andy to blow free with a click track and see where that takes us.

Nicely done, this arrangement is a great example of space and time by Bud. Great job of making the best of what is available.
No excuse for Andy though, the mystery horn was placed in the mix sweetly, he will hit the changes, once they are written around him, lol... just teasing Mr. '09.
Great job fellas, I don't feel so alone now on the jazz stuff.

beating expectations
man love the guitar bits in here. the ascending notes at :48, the funk at 1:24, the almost off-time strumming at 1:50, the distortion lead that comes in at 2:28 behind the chirpy organ. great bass playing too, i like the way the bass at times mimics the sax and other times plays a melody opposite it, i wish i had the patience for jazz, cool stuff.

Jazzed
You are killing me with the jazz stuff bud.

These last 3 tunes of yours are amazing. It's hard to believe you're not playing regularly to a full house in some small dank, smoke filled club night after night. Your playing styles seem to suggest a total familiarity with each other. That back and forth-ness that you expect from a good band. Wow.

Hats off to you guys, because I can't imagine how you managed to capture such an authentic sound of a couple of guys improvising and just jamming away IN THE SAME ROOM!!

big bravo
i really like this groove.
you guys took your time exploring different patterns,
and i was interested the entire time.

there's a sax guy used to play with keith jarrett i drooled over.
you give me that same drooling feeling here, andy.
what an ear to what's needed/not needed
and what a heart to play it/not play it right!

i wanted more definition from your tracks, kevin.
there might be a few issues with the timing and pitch of the GB files against the sax,
but i got a good hit of your swell guitar at 3:05, and wanted more of you shining thru.

big thumbs up on this one - excellent pairing of talent, would love to hear another mix with sax offset with more/louder guitar.

What a week....
I have to apologize for not getting to this sooner....

But guys, this is very cool in every way.... I love the drums, the bass, the groove, and the guitars, and then the sax is so nicely fitted in that this doesn't come across as "rhythm section with sax on top".... It's all intertwined and textural....

This REALLY perks me up, just listening to it...

Can imagine this live.
I just listend to a remix of this song which I described as "David Bowie having a drug-induced dream that he was John Coltrane". Now it's a real pleasure to hear the original. It's definitely jazz, but it rocks too. It's kind of like if Acoustic Alchemy and Spyro Gyra collaborated on something with a hard rock edge. Wonderful sax tone. This would be a great song to see played live.
