Mephistophelian Grin

Description
I picked up a midi keyboard for Christmas and this is the result. It's a lot more piano based than my other stuff as I'm trying to teach myself how to write songs on piano. I'd still like to expand on this tune a bit -- I think there's room for improvement. Anyways, enjoy!

I love playing fast! It's a shame that it takes me forever to get it right though. I'm going to try and bust out more piano based songs...I love that instrument too much!

Key whiz
Your playing is excellent. You have ideas that challenge the listener, always a good quality in my book. The production values are high. I think I've said this before, but I think the sterile perfection of the drum track detracts from the songishness of your work. Sounds more like an exercise. Don't get me wrong. I like the piece, but I'm suggesting trying a more realistic rhythm track to bring your work to life.

drums
Thanks for being honest about the drums -- I appreciate that sort of criticism. Anything to improve the music. I'll work on adding some room mics and some reverb to liven it up a little bit. I think I get stuck trying to go for clear production in the drums and it ends up sounding sterile. Thanks for listening!

Very nice
Aside from the excellent key-playing I was also paying close attention to the drums. Sounds superb on both counts :)

I have to say that hearing pieces like this really make me wish I could have continued with my piano lessons.

I'm looking forward to hearing your next tune using that new keyboard.

very good drum programming, but try to humanize the drums. the bass theme is the same you play on the keys. probably another bassline make it more pen. but i can hear, you are a good musician - very good work!

Drums and bass
I've actually redone the drums in a new mix that i've done and I think they sound a lot more lively and human-like. I agree with you on the bass; I'm going to try and write some more interesting bass lines to go along with the piano. Thanks for listening!

Outstanding
sounds and techniques ...there are elements of Rick Wakeman coming through to me...but that is 'cos I is mostly an old fart...but seriously I think this has juice...but I have found that you need to be aware of the difference between playing of piano and keyboard.....because keyboard often has sustained voices ,pads etc you do not have to play it polyphonically ...i.e it is okay to play one handed .....OI who am I ...don't you listen to me ..just keep on keeping on...I go lie down .....NURSE the Screens.....and a large braaaandeeee !!!!

sounds
I do need to be aware of the difference - this was my first attempt at polyphony on piano however. I'm still trying to figure out the whole keyboard and piano world so right now I might be stumbling around aimlessly. Thanks for listening!

Michael
this is really well done. I like how you've stayed away from what most of us are doing as far as instrumentation goes. I love how you maintain such a strong rhythm throughout without using a traditional bass and drums "rhythm section". Very musical, very imaginative and very good listening - I'm impressed.

Hoping for expansion of variations
Great title. Cool photo of a photo. Nice use of rhythm. I dig the initial groove, the first half of the variations. I was hoping for more harmonic shifts to go along with the rhythmic shifts. The last third of the variations kind of peter out. Also, I would've liked terraced dynamics, pacing shifts, moments of density/harmony that give way to simplicity and then build back again. That sort of thing. Nonetheless, nice initial concept.

expansion.
You've got some interesting ideas for me here -- I'll look into incorporating them. I've already completely remixed this song but I definitely want to add some more parts. Thanks for the inspiration.

changes
I've refined this piece a little bit, making it more cohesive and having the middle chord progression make sense, along with giving it a bit more energy with a synth pad. I would like to explore adding some variations though. I'll drop off the latest version.
