My Car (Is Adequate)

Description
An ode to my VW Golf I wrote a few months ago and just committed to Logic... I'm not sure about a lot of my arrangement + mixing choices here --the busy-ness of it all, the slap echo on the chorus vocals, the very artificial-sounding Ultrabeat. (I could go on and on...) So your comments are much appreciated. As always. But maybe even more than usually. If that's possible.

Lyrics
It's a hatchback '99
The last year of the old design
Bought it for a song at the secondhand store
Some folks might think it's plain
Thumb their nose at the dents and the coffee stain
As for me I never wanted much more

My car ain't gonna win the Grand Prix
But there was room enough for you
And that was good enough for me
Maybe it's my duty to the auto industry
To replace it
But I can't face it
No, no, 'cause my car, my car,
My car is adequate

I'm not like those other guys
Who trade her in at the first surprise
I take my time and I like to be sure
So I can't understand
Why you scoffed at my open hand
As for me I never wanted much more

My car ain't gonna win the Grand Prix
But there was room enough for you
And that was good enough for me
Maybe it's my duty to the auto industry
To replace it
But I can't face it
No, no, 'cause my car, my car,
My car is adequate

Love a Golf :)
but not a big Ultrabeat fan (although I think there are more natural sounding kits lurking in there somewhere).
I love the title line "my car is adequate" - cracks me up. I'd think this is more "alt pop" than folk (even contemporary) - an interesting set of lyrics.
Production and vocals are terrific, but something makes me wonder whether the lyrics might be better served by a less polished backing - just a thought.
Great vocal!

to me and it make sense actually ...nice work

Like it
Like songs that tell a story and this tells a nice unusual one. Reminds me of Dean Friedman a bit. I could hear an alternative version of this with just acoustic guitar and vocal, I think it's strong enough to stand up on its own.

Had me grinning
Brilliant work!

Very clever setting the lyrics in a very serious melodic structure.

Wonderful sense of playfulness and irony.

Cheers

Another great one!
You always seem to choose a distinct perspective on things, and these little quirks make your songs seem to stand out. Very solid songwriting, with a sort of different subject. I actually really like the Ultrabeat beat that drives this. It's sort of adequate too. Reminds me of pistons clicking. Maybe lay on another drum part at that point, something to build up the song. Did you use vocoder on the harmonies? That sounds cool, very slick. Sort of Kraftwerkian... Like Neil said, maybe the music is so much less than just adequate, it's hard to imagine the singer traveling in a merely adequate car! But as one who travels in an extremely adequate Hyundai Elantra, as long as it gets you there, that's all I care about!

Michael,
I have to say that your productions are amazingly deep and wide sonically. There is a crispness and separation to all the instruments in the image and in frequency. All together it makes all your stuff really listenable. I got lost in the song and so I didn't notice right away the minimalist Ultrabeat support. However, I will say that even though a better drum backing would probably make the song even fuller, you seem to have a talent for using whatever you want and making it sound good. I had no problem with the vocals at all.

The folks above
put so eloquently that I can't add to what they said. Let me add though that I liked it very much!

It takes a special kind of mind...
...to come up with a song like this....

Nicely detailed lyrics, reminds me of some Richard Shindell songs... I like the guitarish sound in the left channel against the piano in the right at the beginning... And then the nice separations in the stereo spread that continue throughout... Makes it sounds neat on headphones... That processed vocal in the right channel is kind of neat, too...

"My car is adequate" IS a great line...

Can't really weigh in on the Ultrabeat question.... Doesn't bother me on headphones, I don't know if I'd be more bothered over speakers...

Cool song
Your vocals are really great. I like the mix; I think it is about right. The lyrics are sweet; they match the mode of the song very well. Good job!

You are a machine
I thought I wrote a lot of songs (just finished a song recording today, lol) but you are unreal. Very emotive lyrics and well written. I think this is my favorite song you have done so far. Tough to judge because you have some good stuff though. Love lyrics like this, which use nonstandard themes and words. Well phrased, and love the stutter beat verse in this one. Well done!

Very witty
lyrics. Enjoyed this.

At times (with a little more vibrato perhaps) I think I hear some Fergal Sharkey in your voice .. with some Bare Naked Ladies in style/humour.

All very well recorded .. top notch vocal performance too. Thanks for sharing.

Very Clever
Songwriting and to my ears this sounds great. I like the slap echo and Ultrabeat actually adds to the quirkinesses of the song and that's a good thing.

Adequate
Love the lyrics. Since you ask for comments...I agree with Neil and Stan and think the lyrics and quirkiness of the son stand alone so maybe a less polished arrangement...a simple sound with acoustic guitar and some drum.

i dig it
dude this is genius. i love the concept, and was rolling along with the hippie/folky vibe and then you chunk a gangsta rap chorus in there - love the low start to the couplets in the chorus, it could be 50 cent, especially with the electronic drum loop. I like the contrast so much that i'd let the drums fall out again after the chorus, that way you get that startling sound out of the 2nd chorus too. Also like the michael2 robot backups. very creative dude, thanks for the fun DL.
