Description
I've had this song in my head for a while. It's a true story. Musically it's a rip off of all the music that influenced the story: skynyrd, steve miller band, john cougar, etc etc. Production is not as bright as some of my other stuff because i wanted the FM radio/cassette tape sound of tunes back then. Anyway here's to buddies.

Lyrics
funny how a handgun
bounces on a bench seat
one hand on the wheel
one hand on the pistol next to me
buddy len says we oughtta put that thing on a leash
that's the funniest thing i ever heard
he has to help me hold the wheel so we don't swerve

take a shot
take a toke
rural route friday night
killin road signs
and grinnin in the dashlight
back when friends were thick as smoke
i learned more from my buddy len
than any girl i've chased around since then

buddy len met a georgia girl
that had never been away from home
took her down to fla
lost her to a used car salesman with a cell phone
killed time for a little while
selling weed and reds
when a tampa judge sent him upstate
he chose heaven instead
and he said

take a shot
take a toke
rural route friday night
killin road signs and
grinnin in the dashlight
back when friends were thick as smoke
i learned more from my buddy len
than any girl i chased around since then

Thick As Smoke
Craig,

Once again your gift of story telling finds it's way into a song. You put the listener in the back seat of the wild ride, bouncing, laughing, coughing on second hand smoke....

I get a great nostalgic feeling from this toon. Yeah, the Steve Miller band feel of it brings me back to a different time in my life that almost parallels your adventure, only no guns and no smoke.

By the way, has anyone told you that you might win the award for putting the most syllables into a single breath? You're the best redneck rap artist I know.

Sorry about your buddy.

Bob

PS Glad to hear the Ratfink guitar strap make it's debut!

i feel sorry for kids
who can't count weed and handguns as part of their childhood experience. i mean where was sally struthers when you needed her?

Seriously BUDDY i'm just waiting for some time riding around in that vw van shooting holes in valrico's 3 road signs.

retro
Sweet retro R&R tune, yet with an up to date flair.

Cool axe work and great vocals. This is a very hooky, catchy song.

I really dig the semi-lo fi approach to the tune... that's very cool. I'm going to have to experiment with that sometime soon.

I'm glad I dropped by.

semi lo fi
when i first started hanging out around here i was into producing tunes that sounded AM. it drove all the audiophiles nuts but i thought those tunes had charm. Can't wait to hear your experiment, thanks for the listen and glad you liked it.

"funny how a handgun bounces"
is a great way to start a song--the lyrics here are classic--and I don't really mean classic rock. Love the stripped-down performance--the unpretentious vocal and arrangement updates it beyond steve miller/skynrd territory. The instrumental part 1:25+ is cool, and I like the electric guitar tones. Personally, I want more aggressive, or louder, drums, when they come in at 2:00, otherwise it's a little too polite for a song that can stand some more power without being overwhelmed. Could the chorus "take a shot.." part come back one more time after the instrumental bits? I'm into the Southern-white-soul vocal sound you get on words like "heaven instead"--maybe on a final additional chorus you could embrace that vibe even more.

Not that I didn't enjoy it as is, 'cause I did--lots. Listened 3x in a row.

man
those are all good suggestions. i might bring the chorus back on another version. i like to think of MJ as a workbench - i always post a "better" version to my web site. www.thetempiesound.com if you're interested. there's a nice picture of angelina jolie out there wearing a tempie tank top if nothing else.

I get the part about tokin and drinking shots. But we didn't kill our road signs, we just ripped them off. But after we bagged our quota it would have been fun to blow the hell out of one or two, so I envy you that experience. Great lyrics here man... took me back, and well sung. I really like the line about choosing heaven instead. I agree with Michael on the drums, and I think the bass could be up a little too, but I like it the way it is.

Story telling
The lyrics here really paint a full picture, music has echoes of early Beck. Things never got quite as free in rural England though I remember 4 bombed guys in a car parked in the middle of a rural Devon lane, sharing a jar of honey while listening to "Shine on You crazy Diamond"....happy days!!

the coolest part of that
is how wide open everything seemed right? 4 guys in a car listening to the radio and passing a jar around in the middle of nowhere and in that moment everything in the world was a possibility, how cool was that?

i like the way you say "no messing about". when i was 12 i used to put on a brit accent and walk around rural america mumbling like keith richards. didn't go over so well. glad you liked the tune, i was happy to discover your songs the other day. always happy to hear somebody who's got their own thing going on.

Production not bright?
I beg to differ, I f***ing LOVE this sound here man. This is Tempie at its roots with a massive guitar riff and some smokin' hot vocals. The lyrics are fantastic man, real storytelling with heart and soul.
And man that guitar strap sounds good!
Dude this is you in another league. This is airplay ready, surprise summer hit, top down, chicks in shorts 'n' bikini tops totally out of sight Southern rock at it's best.
I salute yo u sir, for the first MJ smash of 2010.

lol i knew you'd get it
our generation was born nostalgic. nothing better than a feel good summer southern rock tune when it's 15 degrees and snowing outside. And you're right, aside from "why is it you didn't want me?" this is probably the most radio friendly thing i've done, and i had a good time doing it. i think i'm going to continue in this direction a while.

killing road signs
Brilliant song! Downloaded. I'm trying to think if Lou Reed wrote any with that progression, he must have.
Anyway, I so love sub-three minute catchy pop songs with guitar solos. production seems perfect to me. I like how you didn't over-sentimentalize the story, not that I would expect you to, but some people might! I don't know if you write short stories or that kind of thing, but I'm sure you would be very good at it.
cool when you bring the beat back after the kickass guitar solo.
I'll have to google that guitar strap thing, the comments about it are confusing me.

i think
maybe everyone has written a song with that progression. this sounds so 'just got my master's degree' but i'm writing a novel. i wanted to be finished by my 40th two weeks ago but didn't make it. almost there. anyway the guitar strap is just a way cool ratfink design strap. but you remember how new sneakers made you run faster as a kid, the new guitar strap makes me a better player.

the atmosphere of the car driving through a big country and the darkness around and the friends faces lit by the dashlight.this is great story telling that evokes a time ,gone, and the place around it''georgia girl that had never been away from home'' is a line that shows the character of the two friends and how life can just take people away.this is the best writing david

What a period piece this is. You have certainly exposed your roots herein bro! (And some of mine as well!)

I love the raw, underproduced sound. A wise choice. Enjoyed VERY much!

This has a real
American nostalgia feel, we were never allowed guns (probably just as well considering how we were!), so can only guess what that was like. We had peashooters and catapults though if they count.
Really enjoyed this Craig - catchy as always.

The main instrumental mix seems a little quiet compared to the leads then they come in. Not sure the cause. The lyrics are KILLER and the delivery is crazy good, tight pithy and fun. The music is certainly derivative, but you know that and outted yourself already on that score, but I had fun, went along for the ride and really enjoyed the story!
