Winter's End

Get Flash to see this player.

This is a song I wrote this week (10 - 17 January 2010) whilst my better half was away oversea. I've returned to using Logic Express 8 as the reverbs I wanted to use don't seem to be achievable in GB '09. There's a lot of guitar in this track, I think at one point there are 5 guitar tracks overlapping. I've spent quite a bit of time mixing this one as it initially felt very muddy with a lot of instruments fighting for space in the frequency spectrum.
I've picked up a great deal of advice here over the time I've been visiting and I've put a lot of it to work on this track, especially EQing. I think I'm finally starting to get it!

There's snow upon the ground, a thaw is coming
I looked into your eyes, I registered surprise
The leaves upon my palms, they give me away

There's a saying where I'm from you never get what you give
Does it mean anything to you, does it mean anything to you?
Can you make any sense of it?
But don't make an offence of it,
You're going home ...

Straight on, straight on to Winter's End,
Don't look back, don't turn around
Straight on, straight to Winter's End,
Don't look back, don't turn around.

If you had your chance again, would you do it all the same?
Or would you be merciful, would you be beautiful?
Would you try to understand, what it is to be like me?
Would you do that?
Could you do that?

Straight on, straight on to Winter's End,
Don't look back, don't turn around
Straight on, straight to Winter's End,
Don't look back, don't turn around.

wall of guitars
Good one Paddy! Overall good performance and production, the mix seems well balanced.
Guitars sound great. The break where the drums lay out is effective too. You should post the lyrics though!

winter's end
i like the way you just leap into the vocals, every line gets emphasis until the very last word of the verse. Your vox have so much confidence these days. Terrific job mixing the guitars in the verse, really rich sound, great chiming back and forth between ears. break is cool too. i like how you just can't resist a giant chorus.

It doesn't matter
.. what I set out o make, that massive guitar chorus is never far off. Thanks for the props man. I'm starting to concentrate on the mix these days and it seems to be paying off.

What's wrong with muddy?
The more guitar the better I always say. This song has a heavy feel at times which is awesome.

Reminded me of Smashing Pumpkins a bit.

I grew up in the 70's and 80's in the south of the UK in an Irish family. I had always loved music but was never given an opportunity to explore making it for myself. About 10 years ago I bought an acoustic guitar and began strumming in earnest. To d... [see more]
