Description
Haven't posted in a while. I've had a bit of a dry spell lately. But since I'm coming up on my one year MJ anniversary I wanted to post something for auld lang syne. So I dug into the archives for a track. I recorded this back in 2006 long before my MJ presence. A little ditty I wrote for my wife, Suzanne.

John Whitehead, lead vocal &rhythm guitar
Deb Carlson, harmony
Bob Carlson, Bass
Stephen Gammell. lead guitar

Lyrics
Skippin’ Stone
words and music by John Whitehead

You’re the reason why
And the honest truth
My boon companion
And my main excuse

You’re my pair of aces
And my short cut home
I’ll be your alibi
‘Cuz you’re my skippin’ stone

You’re the ground I walk on
And where I’ll make my stand
I can take the punches
‘Cuz you’re my corner man

You’re my flesh and blood
You’re my walking staff
You’re my best defense
And my better half

You’re my own true north
And my daily bread
You’re my driving wheel
The song in my head

You’re my pair of aces
And my short cut home
I’ll be your alibi
‘cuz you’re my skippin’ stone

first things first...what is a 'skippin stone'....no wait..i'll google. BRB. ok...so according to wikipedia your wife is a 'flattened rock that you'd like to repeatedly throw into a river'. hey....whatever works. anyway, john....another gem from the master of simplicity. all your songs seem to ooze a natural goodness...like you're constantly at peace with everything. i like that. very easy relaxed vocal harmony....and perfect execution as always.

'Tis a bit of an obscure metaphor, but as a kid I always loved to skip stones (still do!). Lovely when you get one to skip four or five times.
That's the lilt and lift that Suzanne has brought to my life. Anyhoo, thanks so much for the listen and the comments. I was feeling sanguine when I wrote this. However, I don't claim natural goodness or feeling more than occasionally at peace. Working on it, though!

Heartfelt, perfect
What a wonderful song, and sweetly authentic sentiment... Your singing, playing, and arranging are so pleasant and listenable too; really enjoyed this one from the archives!

Yeah, this is perfect....
I've been really hungry for a nice, tight, well written song lately, and here it is....

I love the lead guitar on this, and I love the lead and harmony vocals. Great airy mix, nicely subtle bit of organ in there...

Thanks for this....

Ed

Just played it for my wife...
...and she likes it, too....

What's the chance of getting the chords? Or am I going to have to sit down and figure it out?.....

Stuff
Did this on in a real studio with some pretty nice mics and good pre-amps. Couldn't for the life of me tell what they were, however.

Did this track live, in a circle everyone playing together. Harmony singer is a great singer that's why she sounds so good!

Yes, that's a real Hammond B-3. This track was produced by a great Minneapolis musician, luthier and producer, Gary Bartig. We recorded it just with guitars, bass and vocals and he decided it needed a little something more. Se he brought in a pal and he layed down that organ part.

I've been singing and playing since the age of fourteen when my brother Paul was working his way through the Beatle book and needed someone to play with. From Paul I learned to fingerpick, play barre chords, and to sing the melody while he sang harmo... [see more]
