Description
Greetings to all of you at MacJams. Happy New Year!

It has been a very long time since I have posted anything. For more than a year I have been busy composing and arranging music for recorder ensemble, harp with recorders, brass ensemble and horn ensemble -- and performing with a group of recorder players in the San Francisco bay area.

I subbed with Phantom on the road from October until the end of December. The day after my final show in Ft. Lauderdale, I found out that my dearest friend Laura (from Nevada City CA) had died.

We were very close and I feel her spirit here on the land which she owns and where I currently live, in The Woods of Northern California.

In dealing with my grief, I fired up ol' GarageBand for the first time in ages!

It is so wonderful to have this tool at our ready disposal, making and sharing music here at MacJams.

The initial impulse for this piece came out of my fingers intact as an improvisation, with three basic synth software sounds from GB. I have then spent the past two weeks polishing and editing, and adding percussion.

One of these sounds is called "Blissful Stepper". It is the driving force of this work, and lends its mood and tone to the music.

I realize that life goes on, and that Laura would want me to enjoy it as much as possible. This piece is in her honor. It has some sadness, but sweetness as well, and a certain urgency to move forward. This pretty much sums up how I feel about my life.

I hope that you can relate to this piece as well. Enjoy, and thanks for listening!

Good to have you back.
I hear a couple of minor seconds, but on the whole this is a upbeat, forward looking piece.

You're only using a few sounds, but there is enough variation among the repetitive elements that I stay fascinated by this music.

Btw, is it our classic background that you and I both don't use a lot of percussion in electronic pieces? After all, if the rhythm is clear, there's no need for hamfisted drums to emphasize the obvious....

Vic!
I'm the first to admit that a glaring weakness of mine is how to handle drums/percussion. Totally out of my element. I spent hours listening to the various electronic loops in the jam packs and picked favorites, then weeded them out gradually. It did seem that I eliminated the heavier, pounding beats first. This particular set of sounds "wanted" minimal percussion accompaniment. Thanks for listening!

Thanks
I appreciate you stopping by and commenting.

You bring up an interesting point. The original GB file was very "raw", not quantized at all because it was an improvisation. I then spent hours lining everything up and synching velocities. Perhaps I went too far with this!

It does sound cleaner, but maybe your ears picked up the fact that it was adjusted quite a bit. Perhaps I'll be less meticulous about it next time. Thanks for listening!

Blissfully stepping out...
Perhaps there is a message there? :-) Definitely a contemplative thoughtful piece, but with upbeat momentum. Not at all something I would expect from you, but then, I guess not many expected my "ic42" stuff either :-) This is a very enjoyable listen, nice voicing.

I am very sorry to hear of the passing of your great friend. But she continues to live through you in these beautiful ways.

endless stairway
After reading your description I would have expected a different kind of track, but after listening carefully and trying to feel the qualities you mentioned I could really appreciate the qualities you've infused this wonderful, carefully playful and dynamic synth track. It's interesting to hear how your approach to a relatively simple structure is completely different from a musician with less musical experience - very unique and minimalistic - with an inert sense of purpose and forward movement. To me it's the subtleties that make this track so enjoyable. Thanks for the post and background story, thought provoking and inspiring.

Parichayaka!
As always, I hoped that you'd stop by here. Thanks for your comments which never fail to reach a deeper layer of perception.

It seems that the common reaction to this piece has been one of surprise, probably because of my description.

Laura was a complex person (in a good way!) who also had many layers. So it turns out to be even MORE fitting that this piece is unexpected. I'm so glad that you appreciated its subtleties.

I'm glad that you found your way to this piece so quickly (I was going to email you the link this morning). You actually *MET* Laura and spent wonderful moments with her in a short period of time, and I will always treasure those memories.

I've been feeling a bit stuck and putting this piece together has provided some forward movement. So far, 2010 has been quite challenging. But life DOES go on! :-)

One of the best things about MacJams
is that we expand our comfort zones and listen to genres we're not familiar with, or think we don't like very much....only to find that through personal connections with other musicians here, we listen to their tracks and then realize that *ALL* kinds of music have a common denominator.

Thanks much for stopping by!

made me think that the waves of this music continue to expand ever outward to infinity. Memories of lost loved ones live all around. You'll see or touch or hear something that will remind you of Laura. I'm sure you've experienced that. I could have listened for longer and would've lost track of time. A different sound for you...
... Love the vocalizations and modulations. Very complex textures nicely contained in a pleasant structure. The sound field has a very nice spaciousness... uncluttered.

The subtle pauses are carefully resolved in each section.

Crafted like a sculptor knowing when to leave marble and take it away in the right places. I'll learn that some day!

I like the mood and the feel of this composition/improvisation. It's a good thing for us musicians to have this tool at our hand. We can use it as a way of restoring ourselves with letting the words we're unable to speak, come to live in our music.

This is
very different in its construction to what I am used to. I like the use of a 'voice' as the percussion, like a shaker, going on in the background fading in and out and the whole vocal effect surrounded by synths very interesting ,very good.Nice.

Jarvoid,
I've always liked the synth sounds whose effects are percussive -- echoes, delays etc. But the danger might be to OVER-use them in a piece...I think I dodged a bullet on this one, by varying the harmonic and rhythmic textures. Glad you enjoyed this!

I used to listen to Mannheim Steamroller
a lot back in the early '80s -- they were among the first groups to use a higher-fidelity LP mastering technique (my memory is dim on the specifics, but I have a feeling it was some sort of digital). I liked their use of orchestral instruments combined with electronics.

Well well well!
What a nice surprise to see a new post from Cameron! I suppose I'll also go on record saying this does feel like a different direction for you. I think the rhythm is actually spot on, nice subtle groove backing the pops of those chords.

It does feel a bit on the experiment side, would've loved to feel some higher highs and lower lows, but that could just be me and my "singles" sensibility.

It's truly great to see you composing again and hope to see more posts from you! Music can be quite the coping mechanism, can't it.

PACKO!!
So great to see one of the first MacJammers I ever met, still here! I hope you are doing well.

Point well-taken about the highs & lows, which would have added more "punch" to this piece. I actually considered doing this, briefly, but decided to let the music stand as is.

As for my composing, I've been doing much, much MORE of it over the past two years, which is why I haven't participated in MJ as often lately. I've got a huge back-log of work begging to be recorded. So THAT is my goal for 2010.

You'll be up to your ears in submissions with recorder ensemble, recorders with harp, harp and horn, and horn ensemble here on MJ in the future. Maybe a few piano and electronic improvs thrown in. Consider yourself warned! ;-)

Best wishes.

In fact, it is USUALLY the case in composition. After the initial flurry of creativity is past in a piece, I often take out more than I add later. Then I go back and take even MORE out. My partner is a composer and he does the same thing. Thanks much for your comments!

Always seems like
when I hear your tunes I hear something special. Lots of great depth in the modern sounds. LIke the computer sounds as well. Nice bounce with the vocals. Great way to use the vocals and how they jell with the organ wormy synth. Cool percussion to go along with that and the list goes on!

Way to Go!

It took awhile...
...for me to recognize the vocal quality of the theme's initial voice...it's endearing and blends so well with the scope and mystery of the other instrumental lines.
A fine tribute to a friend...

It's interesting
because I wasn't consciously aware of the theme having a vocal quality, but it really does! I just thought it was a neat synth sound. Thanks for your observation and kind words.

I saw your name...
...in Chat, Cameron, and realized it had been ages since I heard anything from you....

It's great to see something new again.

Your music always gets well past my abilities to feed anything back that's descriptive, so I imagine that it all ends up sounding the same, but...

I really like the polyrhythmic feel of this.... different beats on different instruments working against each other... I've probably said this before, too, but I continue to really enjoy the timbres that you employ in your synth pieces. I think that you and Miss Chaos are two people on the site who really get it about synth timbres... You never sound just bloop and bleep to me.... There's texture to what you do....

Texture, too, in the mix. It's not a 'natural' soundscape, it's wholeheartedly synthesized, but it's both wide and deep for all that...

I like the deep bass tones.... It's hard to tell the dividing line between melody and rhythm on this piece, but I think that's what's cool about it...

Good to have you back, Cameron....

Ed

Thanks, Ed!
I remember first meeting you when I posted "Hegira" back in early '05. Your son really liked it as I recall, which was flattering (wasn't he only 13 or so then?) Anyway I've always remembered that a young person liked my music, which was a great honor for me.

You always manage to be VERY descriptive, Ed.

Wow, Miss Chaos! I do remember her great synth textures. Is she still around? I know she got married to a fellow MJer, right?

You're right....
Edge liked 'Hegira' very much, and came back to it often for a while. He was seven or eight back then... He still likes interesting synth things, and he actually came in while THIS one was playing and asked about it... I forgot to make the connection for him, but I will... My son still loves interesting synth textures. And polyrhythms. And Weird Al. What can you do?

I haven't connected with Miss Chaos in ages, but she pops up... She DID get married to a MacJammer, and once again my memory fails me...

Nice tones Cameron
Interesting the way you have wound the loops around each other and I think you did a great job on the percussive elements
I can imagine this as a musical part for something like Miami Vice for some weird reason (although it actually reminds me more of Tubular Bells)

particledots...
interesting idea about Miami Vice! I didn't see that show (although I remember when it was on) so I don't know exactly what you mean. However I do remember Tubular Bells (by Mike Oldfield) which I was impressed with back in the Exorcist in '73.

The only loops used in this piece were the percussion ones, which I proceeded to overlay, chop up and rearrange.

Thanks for listening & commenting!

Hello Cameron
I'm sorry to hear about the loss of your friend Laura. I think this piece is a very touching and appropriate reaction to your grief. It's got a restless positive energy which I find very endearing... life indeed does go on...

Your Feelings
show through in this peice of music, its really nice to listen to. I sometimes gloss over people that are entirely electro, but I'm really glad I gave this a chance. if you like this kind of stuff, you should check out Ultima Thule podcast in iTunes, great stuff for meditation, relaxation, magic mushrooms, or whatever.
Thanks for sharing Cameron, liked it!

Lots of breathing room here
There's the tones (Blissful Stepper is fun), but the spaces in this piece really intrigue me and make for a playful and uplifting composition. I like how you've kept the low frequency beat energy way down so that the rest seems to float in a cloud of coloured shimmering, and yet you still achieve a captivating sense of rhythm that thoroughly engages the listener. Nice contrasts and phrasing between the staccato and legato synth textures with little scrubby cymbals here and there for interest. The conversation between the bass tones and the vox like synth at 3:13 is fun. A fine piece sir!

I'm so sorry to hear of your loss. This work is a most fitting tribute to Laura's memory.

It's great to see you back posting Cameron!

Take care,
Doug
