Lyrics: SonnyJim

I’ve got a plan
I’m going to take you out today
There’s always lots of time here in my mind
To say the things I’ve got to say

I want to show you
All the secrets I have found
And all the kind and simpleminded things
I keep buried underground

But it seems like
We never spend any time
Feeling fine on the line
Going round inside ourselves and singing
La la la la la la la la
La la la la la la la la

I wanna know
But then it all just slips away
And I think I’m tired and always wired
It turns out its been just me singing anyway
La la la la la la la la
La la la la la la la la

I like the soundscape on this....
....including the big, reverberant guitar... Then the guitar break towards the outro, with a touch of Manzanera and Summers.... The bass is subtle and easy to miss, but at the end it pops up and I realized how essential it was to the feel... Great vocals and lyrics...

Over the headphones...
...there's a little more distortion than seems intentional, especially in the left channel.... I know you're effecting the voice, but I'm wondering if something somewhere is too hot....
racerat said 2737 days ago (January 23rd, 2010)
distortion
Thanks for the constructive criticism Ed. Right you are. The left channel is a bit hot on the vocal and it is the processed sound that is at fault, a result of the plug-ins used. Did my best to correct it, but pulling back on it too much just made it too clean sounding. I decided in the end to go with sonnyjim's intent and let the meters be damned.

this is why i love doing collabs so much... i feel like i write better to music composed by someone else so i have a fresh take on the vocal... this track is really good in a what is mainstream indie sort of way...

sonnyjim did an amazing job with the vocals on this I think. When I got it back from him I was taken aback by how his vox had totally changed the mood. One of the fun things about collabs, always an unexpected evolution.

Nice sounds
I like the way the voice blends with the spacey vibe to the song. I think the space flute at the beginning was a little too high. Other than that perfect.

Nice one.

Mood Ring
The first thing any good song will do is evoke an emotional response from the listener… no matter what that is. I get that from this song big time. It changed my mood ring from purple to green, whatever that means. Seriously, I always look forward to your songs. It’s never the same thing twice. Excellent work!

mood ring
Hey Eddie, as a colorist I'd say purple to green is warm to cool. Glad that the tune moved you, in whatever direction! Been trying to branch out a little in the genre department, sonnyjim always helps me see things in a different light and pushes our stuff into territories where I wouldn't normally tread. That's his gift. He really drove the mood on this one. Warm lush harmonies that take it to another plain.

Thanks for showing your beautiful mug my other partner in crime. I think Mr. Jim and I were separated at birth, we do sound alike at time, only in tone though-- in pitch, and the ability to build a wonderful melody, sonnyjim has it head and shoulders above me. We also fight like brothers (well we did in the old days anyway) He's a master.

Really pro stuff
Love like "feedback" trick going on. Great choice for vocal effects. Bass is superb regarding the sound.

Sonnyjim EXCELLENT words.

One gripe: I was waiting for this tune to just exploded, ala Ridd Sorensen. But in no way is that a put-down.

Dig this one a lot. A perfect length. Could have easily gone on too long.

Great, great work. Inspiring. Might have to rip this one off. lol

Thanks LL.
1. I appreciate the song length comment. That is a gripe I have about a lot of stuff on MJ. Way way to many 5-6-7 minute songs.... "get in, say your piece, get out" is my motto.
2. Break out: The temptation to fall into the soft-loud-soft model is always there. Always whispering in your ear "hey, wouldn't a crazy loud distorted guitar go great. right here?" But you must stay strong...;-)

Ed is correct!
Give that man a cigar!! And I take all the blame for the distortion (unwise plug-in decisions....).

I have been sitting here with new mix ideas popping into my head, too. Maybe we should enter this in Chikoppi's CollabBlab Contest? It's a pretty simple song, after all, and should be able to withstand some changes, yes?

Deepest thanks to all who've commented; I'm very glad to have this arena....

Nice collab
Love the serenade to the simple beauty of shared time that just can't quite be put into words, combined with an inability to have it happen. That radio EQ used on your vocals gives me the sense that you are distant from your desires, a great conceptual choice, sonic irony. A wonderful collaboration, guys. In my ears, the ending was a disappointment; around 3 minutes I wanted a return to the vocals, as a recapitulation or coda that gave the track a more substantive end. But a wonderful track.

I had to look up the meaning of Echolalia: meaningless repetition of another person's spoken words as a symptom of psychiatric disorder; or by a child learning to talk. This added another layer of interest to the lyrics. Nice.

Thoughtful
Tobin,
First of all thanks for the comment that was more than a sentence long. I think that thoughtful commentary and critique is a fading art here at MJ sad to say. maybe it's because we try to fav so many songs and just can't keep up with all the music being posted, but I think more like it it is people just being a little, well... I'll move on. I appreciate your critique of the ending. It is a bit weak, and just kind-of fades away instrument by instrument. I've never been very good at snazzy or even well considered endings. A coda of the vocals would have been my choice as well, I tend to go for a more predictable structure, but sonnyjim has helped me begin to break at least some of my habits. I had to look up Echolalia, too. SJ has a way of enlarging my vocabulary as well as my musical horizons. That is the beauty of collabs: a different perspective! Who knew? Thanks again!

nice
love that first line: 'i've got a plan/i'm going to take you out today'. what a cool, everyday honest line. this has a laid back swedish pop vibe that i really dig. i like the little rises and falls throughout, gives the tune a kind of geography. really well done all around, thanks for the DL...

Swedish Pop? I can't say I could put my finger on that genre. Any bands that epitomize that in your estimation? I'd like to try to hear what you mean. I like your characterization of the song as a "geography", a better and more interesting word in many way than "landscape". Thanks for the listen Tempie.

Man the bass sits so well in the mix
and adds so much gravity to this great song - fantastic tone and touch. All around the production on this is just gorgeous - I am so jealous - I feel like a neanderthal punker when I hear something this rich. touch
Sometimes, maybe it's all the late nights in the studio after the wife has gone to sleep, that I find I take great interest in the softer touch. A finger flick on a bass string, a harmonic on a 12th fret, a whisper in a pop filter. Sure I like to bang out the jams like an of us grey rockers, but there is something in the inch between silence and tone that is just so tragically beautiful.

jiguma said 2734 days ago (January 26th, 2010)
Great tune,
am especially enjoying the musical bed (the bass works a treat). Like Ed said, to me the vocal is a little too hot (and perhaps with too much fx), in fact I find the song pretty wearing on the senses - not much in the way of auditory variety. But then I'm just an old guy who hasn't listened to much music in this style. I also kind of miss the tops in the sound - seems very much mids and lows to me. Then again I've just done a kilometre in the pool and maybe my ears aren't what they should be at the moment :)

hot
The distortion is slowly eating away at my brain and my ability to be happy with this mix. The true tragedy at MJ is that you can't go back and fix a mix and repost it without losing all the fabulously thoughtful comments and kudos form all my friends here. That I couldn't bear. I'd rather sit with a unhappily hot mix. I'm so careful, but there is always that little thing that slips through. Yeah, I know there isn't too much variety in this one, but too me that was the point. I would have labeled it "shoegazing" if that genre was available---and is one that I really dig, btw.
Thanks for the honest critique. I really appreciate it, and always wish I had more folks like you around.
Best,
P

Lovely syn-orchestration
of this song; beautiful timbres, great restraint. Vox are terrific too--I do feel like even if the arrangement didn't "explode" the vox could have risen in pitch/emotional intensity later in the song to good effect. But I'm really impressed with both of your work here!

So cool
Listening to this is almost a relaxation exercise. Love the simplicity of the droning crescendo and how it breaks in the "chorus" with just 2 chords. The flying guitar in the end... just love it. Same as the lalala with the clean (non telephone) voice harmonies.

Sometimes I feel the same of what the lyrics say here with my daughters. Perhaps "just" singing is a way to expose those simpleminded secrets; music is so wonderful, an envelope for the most precious letters.

As a bass player
I have to object to the opening of this track. A bass can do more than play the lowest guitar string down an octave.

Otherwise a very nice and flowing track. The processed vocals are a perfect fit. Nice piano part and all that.
