Lyrics
I was raised above the Mason-Dixon
Back in the days of Richard Nixon
I still recall the ski to school
In the winter’s white and blowy cool

Now I've got the Southern wife and Southern kids and all
But deep down I’m ashamed
When I say “Y’all”

Great-great-grandpa fought the First Manassas
He survived so that his genes he'd pass us
But if I'd tell my story true
I'd admit he wore the Union blue

Now I've got the Southern wife and Southern kids and all
But deep down I’m ashamed
When I say …

Y'all be good
Y'all be kind
Y'all come back now, y'hear
in your own sweet time

Now I live a Southern life, and to a Southern grave I'll fall
But deep down I’m ashamed
When I say …

You have an incredible way of telling a story with music. It is just some of the best stuff I have heard all around. It is a pleasure to have a dialoge with you and your talent.

Simply awesome
This is a great song with good melody line and chord progression. Very good guitar playing and I like the piano fill-in as well. Last but not least, the passionate vocal is a definite credit. Thanks for sharing / Mike

intimate
The proximity sound of the guitar and the vocals make this song an extremely intimate experience. Like I might have said before, you're really a master in controlling your voice to express just that right emotion on the right spot. Well, it might be half-baked as it is now, but it already tastes yummie like a chocolate milkshake. Splendid post again.

Intro guitar very moving
Lovely and introspective. I listened several times with headphones and without. I'm a fan of the piano and violin accompaniment. Your guitar and vocals are pristine! I don't care for the organ sound in places...or is that from the sustain pedal on the strings?

Yowsa!
Nice! That second verse particularly could have used the deesser a bit but as per usual for your recordings this is pretty pristine and very nice. I am not a bit fan of the string part here, and would have preferred that bit being played by the organ by itself. But it's okay, I s'pse.

I like that....
...you tell the truth in your songs...

Great song, well sung and played. Nice phrasing in the guitar and vocal.

My nit will the same as Jim; I'd prefer the organ and piano without the strings, or find someone to get the highest quality strings you can get, orchestrate 'em, and use them sparingly.... That truly is a nit, though... The song comes through, and it's a solid song....

Nice rhyme on 'Manassas'....

Really enjoyed this
My great grandfather was a Pennsylvania volunteer, and much of my family lives in North Carolina...so I can relate. And this song does not sound so half baked to me! Thanks.

bless your heart
GREAT tune man, not half baked at all. Love the concept, and you make these quiet tunes seem so effortlessly good. You really pick up where JT leaves off, honest northeast rural folk, "pretty and witty". Your voice is in top form. Great sparkly production too. I've got most of your tunes on my "sunday morning" playlist, they're a real pleasure.

Excellent
vocals! You have one awesome voice. Your guitar and piano is pretty darned solid as well.

I really like the song as is. I'd be really curious to see what it sounds like with a very simple drum accompaniment ... one with perhaps a light rim shot snare. It may enhance or it could detract, but I'm just curious to see what that would sound like.

Anyway, very nice work!

Wow!
I'm very glad that you got on my radar with your recent visit to my page...then I noticed guygroove's comment about your song just now.

Because this is excellent! Guitar and vocals are top-notch, and the mix of piano, organ and strings are nicely integrated with the live aspects.

This song tells a wonderful story, and the music vividly reflects a Southern flavor with gospel and country elements woven in.

Really fine work!

amazing...moving
Wonderful, emotional journey through time. The choice of instruments supports the story and your voice carries the song effortlessly through this melancholic landscape of hills and valleys. Very happy to travel along...

intense
Hey there,
This was intense to me,-lol worked and went to school up north and most of my clients all up north during my suit and tie days, but raised near manyasses,va (lol) now back down in south and with a southern wife, and up the hills doing a southern life-but proud to say Ya all,you got a sweet and smooth vocal, and the guitar really shined in this,I think the piano added some cool flavor, but a violin would have been cool too!! or fiddle as they say in the south-lol Great piece, real unique!!!

KY
Born in RI and raised in KY, so I can relate. Great Great Great uncle fought in the Civil War in blue alongside Custer (yup he fought for the Union)...but now for the song. Lovely pickin, touching sentiment. Really magnificent organ. The recording quality is tops. Great mix. Stereo field placement is nearly flawless. Color me impressed.

Courage
You are a brave man Michael. I don't know if I ever could write something like this.
Performance and production is pro.
Regarding the sibilance, did you try to sing not directly to the mic but pointing somewhat to a side of it? Same distance and all, so the mic proximity effect is not affected.

I was
pretty sure I had faved this earlier today. Anyway, all taken care of now.

This is beautifully done. Shades of lots of stuff I love. For some reason tonight, I'm really enjoying the tension of honesty vs conceit here (do you really have that grandpa, or did you invent him for the sake of an excellent rhyme?!)
Great title, too.
I'm a fan!

Y'all
What a wonderful slice of Americana! I hear some of Randy Newman's bite and Tin Pan Alley classicisim in this. But then it's all your own, as well.

Wonderfully simple but evocative arrangement; spot on choice of instrument voices.

The left turn into the chorus is really seductive. And what a beautuful chorus it is.

Then there's your singing: understated but powerful.

This hits the bullseye, Michael. You should be very proud.
