The Long Dark Night

Description
This is really depressing... but it turned out well, I think. Sometimes tunes are just sad. I'm glad I don't really feel this way! I promise I'll post something upbeat next week to balance this one!

Lyrics
David McCord
The Long, Dark Night

Am I naïve to believe that if you leave…
I’ll be all right?
If it’s true that me and you are really through…
Here comes the night
The long, dark night
The long, dark night

So what’s it mean when you dream in between
Black and white?
(If you) go away, how can you say that it’s OK?
Here comes the night
The long dark night
The long dark night

Bein’ lonely Isn’t only
Being all by yourself
When there’s no one
And there’s no sun
There’s just longing for somebody else
When you can’t see the glow of the light that you know love was making,
The world will grow dark as you feel your heart is now aching…
Breaking.

What can I do without you? It won’t do…
to put up a fight.
What went wrong with our song? Now you’re gone…
Here comes the night.
The long dark night
The long dark night

Wear a mask when they ask of the past…
and keep out of sight
On my own, all alone, love has flown…
Here comes the night
The long dark night
The long dark night

Bein’ lonely Isn’t only
Being all by yourself
When there’s no one
And there’s no sun
There’s just longing for somebody else
When you can’t see the glow of the light that you know love was making,
The world will grow dark as you feel your heart is now aching…
Breaking.

What’s it mean when you dream in between
black and white?
If it’s true that we’re through, what will I do?
Here comes the night
The long dark night
The long dark night

A touch of French Chanson here
I could Jacques Brel singing this. Very well done. Nicely restrained strings and great vocal.

Lyrics aren't bad either!

Cheers

au francais ?!
That would be cool - but all those rhymes stacked up like that would be a translation challenge and a half! Jacques can sing English - I wouldn't mind. (Thanks for the compliments.)

Sad, but not mopey
You pack considerable drama into this song and your singing of it! I like your arrangement of this--string dynamics are nice and I like the "lead" acoustic guitar in the R channel. Enjoyed!

Dark Night
Very evocative, gypsy-esque atmosphere. I especially like the guitar work on this. Very
cool chorus. Really nicely executed concept and production. Well done!

I like the gypsy feel....
...and the lead guitar.... I also think the dark cello line works nicely and subtly...

The lyrics are strong, as is the melody, and I like the vocal....

Good one...

Acoustic
Really nice song. Very strong guitar and vocals work. The synths are one-dimensional and kind of lessen the impact of the authentically personal aspect if the song and performance (in my ears). I'd have kept this acoustic or added a more intimate supporting line like a solo viola/cello thing. But I enjoyed the track. Solid writing, playing.

Just a folk singer. Well - mostly a folk singer, but I like to try just about every style a middle-class white guy from Mid-Michigan can sincerely try. Be sure to check out my "band" — I used to play R&R with these guys back in the 70s, but now we'... [see more]
