Description
This one is a long time coming. I have been sitting on this for almost a year. Mostly because I wanted it to be totally separate from the others. Maybe it would find some new fans. I promise this is the last version of this song. This version is the original way it was played and arranged. I sent it to Yeman and we had a little back and forth about what he should do with it. He eventually decided to just do it as if we were sitting having a Jam and kept it very simple. This kid is one of the coolest human beings I have ever known, as well as one of the best guitarists I have ever had the privilege to work with. He made me sound capable and that is no easy task ;)

Yeman Al-Rawi Lead guitar
Guy Groves Rhythm guitar & Vocals

I had added other guitar tracks and even a midi upright bass line, tweaked and fiddled till I was blue in the face. I opened it this morning and went with just Yeman and me and our guitars. It was the simplest and best version of the take on this song I truly hope you enjoy it.

ok
since I have followed this through so many changes... I am back for the latest. I love the simplicity of the guitars and how can I not with someone so talented as Yeman and yourself, but I do have to say I prefer the vocals more on the others... I just feel the sentiment stronger in some of the other versions maybe because of the speed you sing them but that is just me. (see... still no better at musical terms LOL)

The One
I remember this is in previous incarnations. I really dig this stripped down version. Your voice is a great instrument. Loads of character. Totally pulls you in and makes you go the distance. I love the tone of the 2nd guitar--especially the harmonics (lovely!).

I would love to hear few more ideas expressed from the second guitar while still keeping minimalist feel. I could hear second guitar building, then stripping down at end.

Yeah...
Like our good buddy Tom (TG) said: "warm."

Nice and laid back approach fits the lyrics like a velvet glove Guy. You and Yeman sound very natural together...like this was something you two played out on the back porch on a lazy afternoon.

I like this version a lot!

Be well friend!

The one
Your style with this tune provokes self thought and introspection. I can imagine kicking back with a group of good friends and listening to this tune - all of us lost in our thoughts inspired by your very cool music. Technically, the imperfections add flavor to the live, sitting around with friends feel this piece has, and so therefore I don't think you should change a thing. Nice work, Guy, and thanks for sharing with us.

I think the song is well served
by the space you gave it without the bass and other tracks. It's pure, clean, intimate. The lyrics are inescapable - your message almost palpable.

Great vocal, crisp guitar work. Fabulous result here guys.

The One
The simplicity of the arrangement allows the goodness of the song the shine through. This reminds of "Nebraska" era Springsteen. Good hook, and I think you could have emphasized it more on the chorus, maybe with a vocal harmony, or maybe a change in the instrumentation.

KSA avoidance
It is so easy to add the Kitchen Sink (I go to Kitchen Sink Anon. meetings a lot)... and your choice to scale back to just guitars was probably the right thing... this sounds very warm and intimate. And yes, Yeman's quite a talented and big-hearted human being. Sounds like we have a couple of them here :-) Really nice piece of music, and perfect style of singing on this. Love Yeman's harmonic-plucks there.

WOW !!!!
How did I miss this "One". I've heard the others, or at least most of them, but this one shines in a special way. Most excellent Guy and Yeman.

Speaking of Yeman, you are right on both counts. He is indeed a very special person, and I agree with what you say about his ability on the guitar. He is, as we used to say, a natural, and one of the most gifted young men I've ever had the pleasure of knowing. The other thing that has impressed me so much is his willingness to work, and work hard for his craft.

What should also be said, is that you too, are among the most talented and versatile singer songwriters on MacJams, Guy, if not the most.

This is truly a case where the sum is equal to more than the parts.

An excellent collab you two,

Ed

michaeljayklein said 2441 days ago (July 19th, 2010)
Good work
Your vocal here has such a nice, cool tone and just the right amount of introspective delivery the lyrics require. Yeman's guitar work is smooth, and yet gently swaying, and both combined make this song breathe and flow beautifully. Also Guy--I agree, Yeman is real chocolate bar of a guy: I liked him and his music from the very first time and hope to work with him on something one day too. This is one of the best songs I've heard on Macjams in quite some time....thanks again both of you!
