Man Divided

Description
A quick experiment to see if Reaper and my new Windows laptop are capable of providing me with mobile multitrack recording. The laptop works well but I'm still undecided about Reaper. It's not intuitive. I had to make a lot of compromises on this track, using my cheap LP copy and the Line 6 Toneport GX usb interface. I also had to use a dynamic mic. The result is pretty lo-fi.

What do you make of me?
I make this as a really strong track! Recording quality is not an issue here for me--this song seems to call for a looseness in structure and execution that the dynamic mic and the LP tone works really well for. I wish it didn't end so abruptly because the song successfully creates a certain mood that the listener ought to be "eased' out of, imho.

Thanks
.. it did seem to come together despite the crappy gear used. The ending is really me lacking the knowledge of how to do a decent fade in Reaper. Glad you enjoyed it.

I think sounds...
really cool. The vocals are a trip... throwback to something sort of Beatlesque. The LP copy sounds good, as do you.

Thanks Jack
.. I had intended something drastically different for the vocal but the gear kinda ruled the day. Glad you like it.

sounds cool to me
i like the lo-fi feel of this, sounds like you're using the limitations of the gear to get a unique sound. don't give up on Reaper just yet, there are some great tutorials out there. I have it on a windows laptop as well, and I think it's just getting used to another DAW (and another operating systems way of doing things). like the tune though.

Reaper
.. yeah I've gone back for a remix and there is a powerful DAW in there somewhere. The GUI stinks but there are some nice features hidden under the bonnet. Glad you liked the tune.

cool
sounds quite alright to me.
I kind of like the dynamic mic sound.
it's a good song and I don't think the sound quality detracts.
the only thing I thought might improve it is a bit more solidity between the bass and drums. not that I'm one to put bass and drums in perfect lockstep as some would insist, but it sounds somehow a little out of sync at times.
the guitar however, sounds perfect to me! I always like listening to your stuff.

Drum n bass
I think the slightly out of time drum and bass is caused by latency. This is something I've no experience of because, well it doesn't seem to affect my Mac at all! I'm going to have to look into ways round it on Vista.
Glad you liked the guitar. I constructed the solo sound myself from some Reaper plugins

I like the
casual feel of this and in parts there's a bit of Beatles in there.... the words are good and the performance too.... love the guitar sounds, but as was said, needs a more gradual end. Sound is OK with a bit more volume (maybe through Audacity?), regards M

Casual
.. thanks man. Nice words. You're right, more volume and a smooth fade. I've already put it through Audacity and addressed those issues. I may post the result here sometime. In the meantime if you want it drop me a line.

monkeys, carousels
dude, great track! yeah its lo-fi but that adds to the charm. love that "what do you make of me" refrain. i REALLY like your guitar sounds on this one, great tone and a nice discipline. also think the key works for you vocally - i like the doubled vocals too. i think this is one of your strongest tunes to date. real pleasure to listen to.

I spend ....
... days and weeks honing and fettling songs and this little morning's work gets "strongest tune to date"? Lol! Thanks for the props man, I thought you'd like the scruffy tangled tottering mess I produced here. I just need a little more air in the "What do you make of me" line.

For some reason
This reminds me of the 60's. It may be the combination of the guitar and the low sound of quality.

Fuzz
tone comes in and makes a nice transition, live drums or in DAW? Good composition, good lyrics too. As for Reaper, I dont know anything about it, but if you are looking for a very simple recording software,I recommend SEQUEL2 by Steinberg, its not as Pro oriented as Logic, Reason, Protools, etc. and has lots of built in fx, 1000's of loops, midi , drums, and come with a user friendly manual, no more pdf files to read through. I use it and I am no audio engineer, thats for sure! Look into it, Only costs about $99.00us, very affordable!

what do you make o' me
that line repeated worked beautifully - the unexpected high harmony there is delicious against the heavier mood gtr solo that follows.
i think your sparse arrangement is reaping big rewards. very unique song, mix, and pacing. thumbs up from this sister, anne

Lo-fi
This is great, man! A song like this begs to be lo-fi. There's a cool heartbreak with a smile sound to the vocals. In fact, I'd say this is a really cool twist. I'd like to hear you do more like this. Those drums and the half asleep guitar are making this a for sure DL.
