Description
The lyrics are based on the last paragraph of the first chapter of "My Antonia", a book written by Willa Cather (you can read it from here). There's also a more or less obvious reference to a R.E.M. song.
This one took me quite some time and now, perhaps because of that, I doubt if I really like it. I lost the count of how many times I changed instrumentation, lyrics, vocals and even the idea of the song, but I think this one is good enough to leave it alone and move on.
Thanks Tokai for the early critic.

Lyrics
Erased

Erased
Going West to the West of nowhere
To this no man's land I stare
And this open sky is unaware
Is the dome of heaven

Erased
There's no road at the light of the stars
I don't care where I'm going tonight
Right here, what would be would be
Between all this Earth
And all this sky
Erased

I lost my religion this time
I touch all the stars with my hands
I'm now one with all and no one
I am shining, I'm
Erased

If I never arrive anywhere
It doesn't matter to me anyway
Between all this earth and this sky
I'm feeling I was
Erased

Dude!
If you listen to a song 8,000,000 times then of course you're going to grow weary of it. But if it's the first time you hear it like I did then it totally rocks hard. It reminds me of something between the Deftones and Chavelle(sp?) only heavier.

Personally I think this song kicks ass. Excellent!

Deftones
Thanks man! I really like Deftones and I think you are quite right, there's an influence from them here. I was thinking also of Welcome to the Machine (Floyd) and perhaps Tom Yorke and trying to adapt those styles to this song. One of the versions was with the voice one octave below, but it didn't sound right: too cool/cold.

A Cather-tic experience
Now THAT is a song. This is fantastic. Yeah, there's some Deftones feel, and I get A Perfect Circle a bit, too. But that's some of my favorite kind of music. Very impressed by the composition and arrangement. Good adaptation of Cather's prose. Tops.

Yeah, I love them too. Don't tell anybody but I used a song of them as a reference in the mix and mastering of this (my monitors are crap and everybody says is not good to mix on earphones). Of course, the result doesn't get close to the reference but it's better than it would have been without it for sure. This is the first song I use another as a reference and I think I'll continue doing it. It works.

I've been feeling a little nihilistic lately so these lyrics are speaking to me - very cool,
and the dark minor feel to the song allows you to express them perfectly. I'm feeling some Floyd in this and also AIC. Great tone on the guitar, although in spots in seems to undercut your vocal a little. Great job overall.

Losing My Antonia
I once wrote a song based of a passage in the last chapter of My Antonia, probably 15 years ago! I'd totally forgotten it... Your song is much better, plus you got an REM reference in there. Great spacious mix, e-drumming, guitars...the list goes on... Nice work!

I discovered the book from a citation in the definition of the word "erase" in thefreedictionary.com. I only read the paragraph from where that citation was taken. I went and read the last chapter of the book after your comment... I think I will have to read it all. Powerful.

When that tone changes, it changes everything. It was dark, then it got brutal. Well done. This track is huge. You should be walkin tall, man. Funny you should post a VanGogh pic as the artwork. The artist Rousseau once said "If I don't know what's wrong with a painting I turn it towards the wall and don't look at it for 2 weeks. Then I turn it around. If I don't know then what's wrong with it, I never will" --and he's right--Distance and time will give the answers. Don't give up on this gem.

Man, you are so nice. I love you liked it. *Comments like yours* is why MacJams is so fun :-)
You got it right with the term "jam" for this. There was a proto song before this one: a very soft folk ballad (yes, true :-) that sounded nice, but didn't have anything else. But it was nice and wanted to have a song that my wife would like (this is a recurrent topic here at MJ ;-), so I tried to recover it and, one weekend afternoon, started to play on top of that acoustic guitar one instrument at a time, jamming and making variations here and there for 5 minutes (the original length). I came up with around 5 different grooves/instrumentations based on the original track. At specific points, there was something I liked in each one of these variations. I cut those segments and put one after the other. The idea was to find out which one was the one I liked the most to use it in this folkish thing, but I liked them all! :-) Then I said, what if I try to give this frankenthing some kind of structure. After that I forgot about the folk song and started working on this one. In the end, it's a jam, and I think jamming is where the most creative things could happen because one is open to take risks and make mistakes. The trick, I think, is to jam really free without thinking "this could be a song..." and also learning to jam alone, which I somewhat learned by accident (another one) here.
Thanks Nick!

Fantastic production!
and then there's the song itself, which is seriously classy. I love the instrumentation a lot and although there are a few flat spots on the vocal (but then again, this is a pretty ambitious piece of work) I really think you've done a fantastic job on this.
Excellent stuff - you've got such a great sound here - everything is beautifully clear in the mix, and the kick drum is loud and clear (not always easy to do).
I'm impressed.

but I'm so happy you mention those flat vocals! You got it man! That's why I'm not really satisfied with this song. Sorry, there's no prize though... ;-) But now I can talk about that. (I guess you are not the first to notice those vocals, but you are the first to not worry too much about the ego of the singer... Well, now that I think about that, you DID worry, and I thank you ;-)

It may sound strange II
(crappy connection here so posting in parts)
This song was/is really a challenge to sing for me. It's at the top of my head voice and slightly below my falsetto range (which is good, because my falsetto sucks). The result is that 1. have to make an effort to sing it, 2. get tired after 5 takes at most, 3. I have to tell my family and to leave the apartment before I start singing (there are no neighbours right now so there's no risk of cops).
There is also a problem with my monitoring setup. I think there's a very short delay in the feedback loop and I can't correct my voice on time, and I enter in a mode that automated control geeks would describe as self induced oscillation. I think there must be a problem in there because, if I'm not already tired, I can sing the song quite well in my acoustic guitar (perhaps a future post), but when I go to record it over the GB project it's horrible.
A partial solution for this problem was to use one of my ears on the headphones and the other without headphones. That's the way I made the take on this post. Much better than before (believe me), but still mmmhh... It seems the problem now is I don't have a tonal reference near the tone I'm singing, so I'll need to add a reference track just for singing. Now, that's for the next attempt.
Right now, I'm going to follow racerat suggestion of taking a 2 month vacation from this song :-).
Besides that, I love you liked it.

I read only the first and last chapters almost by accident (the last because Michael pointed to it above), and I found those little snippets of magic in the last sentence of each. I don't know: I think if I read the whole book maybe those phrases would have been diluted in the whole. That's what normally happens to me.

Space Western
I have a couple of plausible reasons for the western space feeling :-) Actually, more than a couple. The guitar in the beginning, it happens somewhere in the west, there's sky (space) all around, and the loneliness.
Thanks for the reflection on your feeling. I was lonely, specially when I was a teen. But it wasn't too bad, those forests and clear skies helped me somehow then. I think that's why Carther's words resonated on me. Sometimes I like to feel a little (just a little) lonely ;-)

First I love your lyrics here - they point to something large and profound. And the photo so works with your song. The driving sound is great and I'm a happy guy, then you lay down this killer solo at 3:00 and later in the end of the song. This is really powerful overall, and a really good mix to boot.

It's great you mention the 3:00 solo. I think that's a particularly self-indulgent part of the song: I love it but is a whole minute and it's not precisely a showcase of dexterity. Now, if you liked it it's not self-indulgent anymore! Thanks for your ears and the d/l.

Thanks Steve. If you say the blend is ok there must be something I did right. *Your* mixes are awesome!
I was experimenting a lot with the guitar on this one (it's all the same guitar, except for the drums and vox): different effects, picking, progressions, strumming, etc. It was real fun trying all those things. Then it was simply glueing together different pieces like a collage. It was interesting to make the transitions sound smooth though.

love the slow dark strains of the music, and the lyrics slowly paint over all the windows of hope, leaving the listener in the cold black mental box of solitary confinement. your singing timbre here drips with the razor-sharp tone of the "scorpions", a very good sound coupled with the guitar work. i can see why you have such a following... may i join? too late, i already have :-)

Mental box of solitary confinment
Wow, it feels pretty bad when you put it with those words Ed :-). On the other hand, it is surprising that the previous version of the lyrics was about that same feeling, although they were almost completely (except for the title) unrelated with this one.

The initial idea of the song was about my frustration to express myself, and because of my silence, I was already erased. Some people call it writer's block. To me feels like terror.
I liked the name and the chorus, but I was completely sure that the idea sucked (nothing worse than having a song about how hard is to write a song) but I didn't have a better one. Then, looking for how to pronounce the word erased correctly, I found the citation that ended up in these lyrics. Lesson learned: it seems that one needs time for happy accidents to happen.

Thanks for joining!

From the moment the drums came in I knew I was in for a treat.

I really like the atmosphere you create here.

To be perfectly honest, I can't say I was too thrilled about the vocals - there were some good spots - but the guitarwork and overall feel of this really makes up for it.
I also like your sense of dynamics here, like around the 2:10 mark where you bring things down again. It really gives the latter half the contrast it deserves.

I'm hearing some weirdly awesome mix of Porcupine Tree and Deftones in this piece and I have to say: I like it.

I agree with you about the vocals: some good spots, but I know there are a few others that sound quite bad. I have some homework to do and figure out why and fix them.
I also really like the elements of the mix you heard, and the thing I like the most about it is that is weird :-).
I did a lot of research about drum programming for this song and I was amazed by Gavin Harrison's videos on youtube. Of course, the drums here are soooo far away from that monster.

Very full mix
This demonstrates outstanding songwriting and even better production. Your vocals go a tad off tune at times, but due to the style of music I think it's supposed to sound like that. I couldn't sing this song, so I am quite impressed. Reminds me a little of Muse. I really relate to the lyrics, but I think the lyrical structure is too repetive. My few criticisms are extremely minor, and with a good mastering this would be a professional quality recording.

Vox
Man, you are too kind. The vox out of tune is not supposed to sound like that :-). I decided to post the song anyway because I was exhausted by it and was afraid that, if I left it in my disk, it would be forgotten. I guess I found the problem why I couldn't get into those notes (not a problem of reaching them, they are lower than others): just bad breathing technique, no more air to support the notes. I'll fix it sooner or later and post it again.
Mastering... Well I'm using only GB plugins to do it. I downloaded the Ozone trial and it sounds great, but it's not in my list of priorities now. Some day, maybe, who knows. Suggestions welcomed (specially what is the thing that made you think about mastering while listening: I could learn ;-).
Thanks Aaron, I appreciate comments like yours, kindly pointing to trouble spots.

great song and sound
woah, the guitars are killer on this. you effectively sell some very odd and creative chords changes throughout and it makes for a very original and captivating tune. I do understand the A Perfect Circle references but this is something great that stands on its own.
good work, I'll be listening for more :)

Dan
Thanks for the listen and comment. This was good experiment but it took me some time to get it right (and was stretched to my playing limits in the process). In the end it was worth the effort.

Hey Billy,
...going through the tunes one at a time...Daniela says she REALLY likes this one.. I give it the rare and coveted triple D award: Deep,Dark,Delicious.

DDD!!!
I love that triple D award! :-D
I think I know why Daniela likes this one: a walk on the beach in the medanos of el vivero on a clear summer night can make you feel like this.
Miramar has magic. (too ;-)

love it, Excellent job mate. The vocal is perfect for this and the sound is outstanding. This is a big song with a huge sound, no wonder it has had so much attention.

Steve
Thanks man. You gave me an excellent critic when this one was embryonic. I still think the vocals could be better. I guess I'll re record the verse voice parts some day. Besides that, I'm quite happy with it.
So nice to know from you again.

Hey Steve
Thanks man. Glad you liked this one. I think this is one of my best (well, not a lot to compare with). I'm starting to make peace with a couple of slightly flat notes in the vocals.
Cheers!
