Description
12 mics
3 guys
live

the arrangement on this tune is still evolving. As is my recording process. We go all live now...some well placed ambient mics to go with the close micing...do the vocals later....

it was really important to my bandmates that we make something that was a true representation of what we sound like live....and they were very right. But it is not easy....the joy of overdubbing and making things perfect it different from th feeling of accomplishment at making a descent sounding live recording...

Let me know how it sounds thru your gear, please!

best

Smooth Jazz is right
and tight. Very nice and excellent recording and mix, all expertly played. It's an honor to be one of the 1st to comment.

Sounds real
good Z. I think the recording quality is excellent, I can hear everyone clearly, nobody is overpowering the other guy, good mix/placement of mics. Nice easy going melody, superb execution from all band members. Tight. Like it!

excellent
makes me fel good the sound is happening for you! I have found that while recording this way is FULL of pit falls, the honest energy you capture is an even trade off for the lack of total performance perfection. We have yet to record on a day where we are all really firing together...but when that day comes, we will get the recording we are looking for. Even on days where we are playing MEH, we have gotten some good recordings....thanks for the listen!!!!

Hey Fran,
it`s sounding a bit foggy, especially the guitar.
Bass could have a little more low frequency.
Overall I miss some clarity, I think!
Not just here... :)

first off
love the playing...beautiful melody and improv......i listen thru some studio grade headphoones and also monitors...drums sound nice in the mix...the percussion shaker was to upfront..the bass should be panned slightly off center to the left....the center is crowded in my opinion...but the overall sound through monitors was nice....thru headphones the bass lacks clarity(eq)....its an ongoing process to get that great live sound...but u r getting there....nice playing by everyone!!

first off
just read IGM comment....so i'm not alone in my thinking about the bass eq.....separating it to the left a bit will help the clairty some along with eq....the guitar could use some mdhi and hi boost or an exciter....u r getting close....!

ah the shakers
were played simultaneously with the drums...this no odubs at all...so they were with the snare on it's track and really close to the mic...
i have not tried putting the bass off center...but i will give it a shot. To me, I am getting a good capture of my amp's tone, and I have several eq presets for it. I lot of the high end I toned back, cause i get nice highs from the condenser mic i have in the room, and that also grabs alot of the cymbals...I hope someday to have a proper recording area to set up so we can separate some and get better definition. But I am learning, and I am totally psyched to be able to this AT ALL!!

Thanks for the input McB and Iggy

Sweet performance, Fran...
Wish I'd been there.

Except for the shakers (I figured they were close to the mic, as you said), I hear a nice balance between the instruments. Nice overall sound which could use a bit of work, I suppose. I'm no expert on this stuff...but I see where McBoy and ICM covered the bases on what I heard, too.

The guitar tone's a difficult one to capture in a live performance recording, in my experience. Don't get me wrong...it sounds good, here...but it lacks the presence of the highs. Especially with that axe you're playing on. I love how it can handle those frequencies. I'm sure it came through clear as a bell in that club...just as it does on your mixed recordings. Getting it on digi...that's something I leave to the techies...which I guess is your job, now, wot ho?

it's funny
when i play slide on ruby, I use the bridge pickup, with the treble rolled back to about 6 or so...after recording this take, which i thought the guys played really well,i realized i was playing with the neck pick up, but i had neglected to roll the treble back up, so yeah, this is a muted version of my tone...i have had a LOT better luck lately, since i put the sennhieser git mic at about 1 o'clock on the speaker hole of the amp...MUCH more accurate sound grab....i learn...i forget...i re-learn...maybe it sticks....i wish we could record everyday for a month or so.....and this was recorded at the drummers house in the room we rehearse in...

1:00 on the speaker...

Great tune Fran
This sounded good to me. Can't tell you why. I have no useful technical pointers for you. But like Duke Ellington said, "If it sounds good, it is good."

are smiling and this sounds great Fran. I see some ideas about the mix below but you need to understand this recording is a major accomplishment and you should be very proud. What a great band.

Listening in Chat...
If you can duplicate this recording environment and mix, I think you could definitely put this on a CD. It is well-balanced, spontaneous, natural-sounding, and very full!

Wow.
This is nice Fran. I like it. I'm listening tru phones. I notice the shaker is a bit loud and the geetar could use a bit more treble.

Overall..a bit more mixing and I think you will have on hell of a live recording.

Sounds really good so far Fran.

Thanks for sharin' it.

How it sounds?
Sweet! Sitting here with a Mackie monitor on each side of me, with my eyes closed-

Drummer is straight forward
You are on (my) right side of the stage
Bass comes through nicely. What's kind of odd is that it also seems to be very slightly biased to the right. Maybe I better get my left ear checked out, lol!

Very nice track!
