Away In Black (MJRF2010)

Get Flash to see this player.

Description
This is a totally different take and approach on the oldest song that I still have posted on this site. It was a rough incomplete demo thing that seemed to miss the deletion of some of the older songs that i had from the first year.

I added and redid the lyrics for starters, the chord progression is pretty much the same, but beyond that is a whole different thing.

I'm not sure if this really is a prog rock piece or not. i have no idea what to list it under.

Lyrics
Away In Black

if i was buried in pain
could you dig it out of me
if i was set adrift
will you anchor me
if i was left for blind
could you help me to see
if i was deaf to the world
would you still speak to me

and black as the night
blindfolding my sight
and black asorbs the light
blindfolding my sight
black has washed over me

cynical and weary of life
can you liberate my soul
broken and shattered pieces
can you make me whole
forgotten dreams are empty
can you make me full
locked away in the dark
is there light after all

and black as the night
blindfolding my sight
and black asorbs the light
blindfolding my sight
black has washed over me

every color is lost to black
would you bring it back
everyday i fade to gray
could you light the way
if i gave it all away
would you buy it back
if it was yesterday
would it make you feel okay

and black as the night
blindfolding my sight
and black asorbs the light
blindfolding my sight
black has washed over me

Away In Black
Some of the phrasing reminds me of Jethro Tull, and I hear some Floyd in here as well. The dark lyrics are cool, and your vocs evoke the mood well. Like that descending arpeggio on the acoustic.

I hadn't thought of tull, but since you mention it, i hear what your saying. I don't know why i sometimes write dark lyrics, maybe they are easier to write.

thanks for the listen!

Like the way you pace yourself
I agree about the Jethro Tull comment Dave_M made, but I'm also reminded of some of the "Birds" early work.

Very cool song Vic, I love it. It's going D/L as we speak.

List it under "VicProgism"
There is some amazing clear, crystal clean sound coming through the speakers. Love those guitars... and that solo 'verbing in the break.. like cool water streaming over the rocks, very fresh.

Vic, your unique style is on display in this remake. Great ending, btw...

First post with my epi les paul. i ran it though the course. the solo was thru the neck pickup btw. sweet sound. it was interesting to go back in time and bring the song to the present.

it kind sits on the fence between some styles i guess. lately I've been getting into creating my own synth sounds in logics sculpture synth. pretty exciting for a guy who isn't all that synth savy in the first place

Very, VERY nice. Lovely guitar work in the verses. Beautiful soloing. Acid dipped razor blade power chords in the choruses.

Yup! A worthy offering for the festival.

Be well bro!

i remember
this one, great sounding version. I hear you're using all of your new L9 skills. guitars sound beautiful. what are you doing different on your guitars lately? they seem so much warmer. i'm going with psych mpre than prog on this one, but there's often a very thin line between those 2. sounds great Vic.

See Emily Play
The jangly guitars and tight verse really feels early-70s Pink Floyd, very cool... and sure enough, Mr. Gilmour comes out on stage at 2:00. Not Prog, but almost quirky-ballad-like... and definitely very, very well done.

Prog rock works for me!
Nice variations as you evolve the piece Vic. Maybe that's what makes me think of prog rock. Love the guitar solo at the 2 minute mark - reminds me a bit of Mike Oldfield. There's a lot going on in this mix - you pull off the sound of a large band with aplomb. And the acoustic guitar at the end - very fine work.

Cheers,
Doug

You might not think so....
...but the opening cadences actually are phrased and sung against the guitar in a way that's very reminiscent of Gregorian chant....

I like the swirling keyboard with argpeggiated guitar and acoustic guitar at the guitar solo....

I also think you're getting a neat, smooth vocal sound on this...
