Description
MacJams reunion time! I originally posted this song January 3, 2005.

As I already remade another old song I still enjoyed generally, this was next in line to be cleaned up 5 years later. It's not as aggressive in the beat and a bit more spacious.

Jam on jammers!

Lyrics
I'm not the man I used to know,
He's gone away and let me go.
The further from myself I get,
I take a hold of regret.

For many years I tried to live,
But now I've lost my will to give.
And no one knows me as I am,
Holding out my cold hand.

Is it impossible to think,
the worst of me emerging.
From the depths inside my mind,
Torturous yet so fine.

I throw myself into the fray,
Can I only step away.
Hoping each and every day,
To find your beautiful gaze.

Do I surrender to this fight?
How do I retain the light?
It's dark inside, my vision lost,
You can make it all stop.

Forever, I will turn to you,
The magic from your gaze cuts through.
A clearing path into my soul,
You help me regain control.

Watch the rain clouds form,
The state I've seen before,
The puppet master pulls my strings,
perhaps he's always been with me.

And something builds inside,
A temper I can't hide away,
If all it comes down to is this,
I feel your gaze releasing it.

This song takes me back
Nice electropop tune. I get the urge to turn my lights on and off in time with the beat. Great job with this on all counts - vox, beats, chorus, and mix. I'm getting nostalgic already.

Thanks for the entry to the festival. Dloaded for future enjoyment.

Doug

So, So, So Gooood!
Such a great mid-80s EBM feel at the beginning with a minimalist synth bass and drum like Nitzer Ebb, and then you get all poppy and Ultravox-esque in the middle and end. Well done! This is lovely homage to 80s Synth Pop that was the music I loved so much. You really captured all that was good with synthetic sounds from that early age. This is easily my favorite song so far in MacJams!

Thanks grave!
You and I are so on the same page. I'm a big Nitzer Ebb fan and do love that blend of pumpy beats with a synth pop flare... Erasure, VNV Nation, all that good stuff!

DePacko Mode is back...
Good to hear your powerful music and great vox. At 3:06, your choired/harmonies have an almost ELO feel... takes me back to the wild '80s :-) Nice! Thanks for stopping back in for this.

I love ELO! I wonder if it was subconscious... as though Jeff Lynne said "Hey Packo, try a little of our flavor in there" heheh!

Clean and direct. Nice vocals! Great mix. I like how you developed tension with the lyrics... until you reach the cure. Well done.

This was always one of my favorite Packo tracks .
The remix is excellent beautifully balanced. Love the chorus and just reminds me what a great vocal range you have. This is SO playing in my car!

Vocals very compelling
Man, I really enjoy your voice. I like how this mix forms a audio frame around your vocals and never diminishes it, even as it builds. I dig the rhythmic nature of your melody delivery, especially your use of syncopation and the way you end your lines before the downbeat. Solid track, simplicity and inner power. Quite wonderful, really.

very wide & full sound...
the beat throughout; your vocal is dynamite. And the varied changes are strong elements that make this song move and soar. That chorus is just so good....

cheers
packosmokes said 2817 days ago (February 2nd, 2010)
Thanks dadai!
Wide... I love that response. Wide and full is always my goal... to fill up those ears which seems a bit tricky digitally as space doesn't truly exist, it needs to be artificially generated.

Thanks a bunch!

Dancing my A** off!
The first thing that strikes me about this tune is how rich and full the mix sounds -- wrapping around my headphones with power, yet clarity.

You *DO* have a great voice! Your style suits this tune perfectly. As McBoy mentioned, this has some elements of Bowie.

Artful handling of drum track and other percussion; lots going on but never cluttered.

GREAT chorus!

That's probably the area I push my mostly, trying to achieve a full, clean mix. It's fun to go back and revisit those old tracks and try to find a way to bring them up to date.

:)
I'm finally getting through the MJRF songs after a bit of a lay-off. This is really well done. I missed this musical period (we had a child born at the start of the 80s and the decade seems to have disappeared from my musical memory. The closest to this I remember is ELO which is a bit earlier I suspect - nevertheless, a very good recording.
