Memory ( MJRF2010) Feat Alimar+Peter Greenstone

Description
At the end of 2004 a Tsunami devastated thousands of Lives in Asia. I released this track along with Alimar in Jan 2005. It remains still one of my most favorite tracks. Then in 2007 Peter Greenstone added some vocals to another version which we performed live into SecondLife on a dual stream.
Very sadly it is almost exactly 5 years ago and we are seeing the devastation in Haiti and it coincides with the release of this song again. So, this year I dedicate the song to the people of Haiti.

My indebted thanks to Alimar as always and to Peter Greenstone for their vocal additions in this new version..

Some may prefer the old version which can be found here: http://www.macjams.com/song/6221

The new mix is fuller with the addition of strings and a lot of fiddling about with a lot of effects!

Lyrics
MEMORY by Slim Girl Fat:

And as the night is passing by:
I cannot see the dream:
Its faded out of sight:

And I was holding on to you :
But felt you slip away:
I could not hold you tight:

And in my memory I'll see your smiling eyes:
You'll never cry the tears I do or see the hurt inside of me:

And we never knew that time:
Was shorter than we knew:
There was no warning sign:

Although I'm searching here for you:
I cannot see the way:
I dare not face the truth:

And in my memory I'll see your smiling eyes:
You'll never cry the tears I do or see the hurt inside of me:

A thousand times a thousand times
My heart will break into a shattered melody:
For all I loved and held so dear:
Is wrapped inside a memory:

And as the night is passing by:
I cannot see the dream:
It's faded out of sight:

And in my memory Ill see your smiling eyes:
You'll never cry the tears I do or see the hurt inside of me:

Mcboy.. ooh so good to hear from you! hehe yes it's been a while.

Again
Your vocals have a deep sense of certain caring and steady love, without pity or nostalgia. Peter's backing vocals grow in emotion and hint at desperation, almost like an undertow. The looseness of the vocals leaves me with a sense of how fragile it all is, how difficult it is to focus on working together, from a conceptual perspective, yet how important individual choices and actions are. A disquieting and inspiring track, both. Thanks for sharing this again.

Thanks
Tobin. I was in two minds whether to go with this mix to be honest. it has such a difference to the original, but I have to admit having both Alimar and Peter with me on the same track was too good an opportunity to pass up :)
Ed Hannifin said 2640 days ago (February 2nd, 2010)
Very Gabriel feel to this...
I like the duet vocals with Peter.... nicely done...

The lyrics are really strong, and moving....

Hey Ed
Thanks so much. I love Peters higher vocals on this and the wonderful bass of Alimars... it just adds a different something to the song which wasnt there before.
billykirsch said 2640 days ago (February 2nd, 2010)
Moving
Beautiful song. Love your voice, calm and sweet. I can feel the pain in Peter's vocals.
Music is flowing slowly like a stream, there's some sadness but also a feeling of moving forward in it.
I'm still thinking and getting in the skin with your lyrics.

Sadly beautiful. Slimmie, great to hear your singing again. And the addition of PG and Al is great.

This is a very strong song. One of your best.

Memory
haunting music, the lyrics are very deep and the harmonies are goosebump raising...one little criticism in that the clicky percussion kind of blew my train of thought as I was taking in the words...regardless, this is a very beautiful piece

SlimGirlFat said 2640 days ago (February 2nd, 2010)
agreed
The clicky sound unfortunately I forgot to tone down before posting it up today... ugh sorry about that.. I have a feeling I'll remix this again any way at some point in the future...
BUt other than that glad you enjoyed the song:)
Doug Somers said 2639 days ago (February 2nd, 2010)
Were this just an orchestral piece
it would have still got me 100%. But the vocals and the message in the lyrics is direct and full of chest smacking impact. It has a quality that pulls us out of the everyday and into the global perspective. And I agree with Ed, it has a real Gabriel feel.

Lovely song, wonderful production.

Thanks for raising the awareness and touching us all.

Great songwriting here...
You could probably do a polka version of this track and it would still resonate! Great lyrics and music...

You've always had a haunting quality in your vox, couldn't really compare to anyone. I suppose I hear influences, but your voice is definitely your own!

And I plan to use it again, heheh!

The Gabriel
type sound is mainly due to one element that is So distinctive in this track, far more so in the original version. I was a tadworried it might have 'dated' the song in some ways .. lol

Classic SGFitude, love your smooth voice, and it is so confident here. Peter and Al add nice counterpoint that really fill this out

at 2:10, the music gently washes into ELO/Beatles mode, really sweet.

So good to hear you all again! Grand smooth Slimmie style I love.

Drakonis

Wow
This is really good, not only is the singing lovely but the music is epic. What I like about the music is that you have very acoustic sounds along with electronic, best mix in my opinion. Beautiful track, well done, great collab.

I listen several times to make sure I heard all the "fiddling about!" Very wonderful track, thank you for posting the lyrics. Reading along with the singing helps me feel the passion of the Vocalist.

vibin
i'm vibing pretty hard off of this one. it's like your touching on the past present and future. i'm not talking about the lyrics because i'm not even listening to those. but the sound! it feels like the past was dark but the future looks so bright. the song sort of transitions into a more hopeful sound. i think you guys need to work a bit on production however. the way that the vocals hit my ears annoys me a bit. i feel like they should be more together. sorta like how the people of the world have come together. does that make sense? more rhythmic unison. keep working on this one and it will be epic!

Great song Slimmie!
and a sneaky way to get PG into the MJRF :) I think Peter's vocals really add a lot to this - really good harmony singing. Of course your fantastic lead track would have made his job much easier. I've just been watching a doco on stadium rock, and I can imagine this at a modern (but cool) equivalent to Live Aid. Lovely recording and performances. Beautiful!
Glad you could drop in at the festival.
Cheers from Oz,
Neil

Haunted and Hopeful
I was immediately captured by the melody... celtic and ancient... haunted yet hopeful... like the voice is coming across the centuries... first impression... as I read the lyrics... it's much more tragic....

nicely captured

Gorgeous vocals/harmonies perfectly evoke the wistful lyrics. Track reminds me of Genesis/Phil Collins. The lush synth sounds complement each other well, and the mix sounds huge. Great job!

Very solid
and powerful. Great song, good mix, solid vocals. I think it deserves a better ending though. Maybe a subtractive fade elements going down one by one until only the sound of the sea remains.
