Lyrics
he was the lost brother
he was the lone bother
he only knew one star
and he looked back too far

he was the lost brother

the said go back to the road
the road from where you came
we cover up the road
there is rain and hail upon your name

we wish for another
one who does not bring shame
we would push you out further
from where the death that came

he was the lost brother
he was the lone brother
they said go back to the road
go back to from where you came

there is a world of wonder
that they would never know
into their world is sown
a time of stone and snow

he was the lone brother
he only knew one star
he was the lost brother
and he looked back too far

intense vocal delivery
this song definitely has a well-focused vibe--foreboding, maybe. the repetition of the structure adds to that nearly-menacing feel. part of me yearns for more structural, harmonic, or melodic variation; but then it might lose some of its impact.

Personally I don't think it needs a bass guitar, in any case, but I'm just one listener...

Gruff..
.. Tom Waits like growl works really well. Like the live feel, the air in the guitar, the feel of the room. This is wonderful as it is - I'd leave it be rather than tweak it. Great lyrics too.

you are
your own living bass, mate. What a decent mileage on that voice. So I agree with Michael, no bass needed. The Tom Waits comparison is evident, but in a way I think you surpass him in honesty. And I mean that.

thanks a
million for your comment.one of the reasons that i thought bass might work on this song is that i thought that the bass opened up and broadened another song that i have posted here ''a heart is gold.35 mile walk ''.any connection with Tom Waits is deeply welcome,''ON THE NICKLE ''is just one of his that had a big impact on me.once again thanks and i will listen to your songs

hey david
i don't know if you've ever listened to ted hawkins but you have an uncanny resemblance and i mean that as a huge compliment. your voice is intense and this is a great song. i don't think it needs any other accompaniment but if it nipped off somewhere for a few bars it would really bring it out. having said that it kept my attention. 'into their world is sown a time of stone and snow' is a great line. you don't describe the song - i really would like to know.

this song
is set in a kind of post war devastated landscape in which there is no returning to home.thanks for your interest in my songs and i will look into your work and also find ted hawkins. there may be foreboding here as Michael said, but i hope some liberating can be done as well.once again thanks david

Such
a powerful voice. I can hear you singing the soundtrack to a movie about the Civil War or about any war. There is so much emotion, angst...in your delivery. Wow! powerful. Thanks.
