Description
This is actually a kind of improvisational sketch from a year or two ago but the performance quality was sufficiently good that I felt I could post it here. It's a short piece but I believe it packs quite an emotional punch considering. I'm not sure if I'll develop the ideas here or not in the future but it does represent I direction that I'm very interested in exploring namely developing pieces for performance using live and looped violin.

Always enjoy...
listening to your posts. Nice improvisation and a very satisfying combination of a rhythmic base for some inspired soloing - can easily imagine you playing this live for a poised crowd.

Circles
I knew I'd love this the second I saw your name. I have a predictable complaint - ok, that was the opening - where's the REST?? (i know, easy for ME to say). I hope you will move forward with this great idea and wow us some more!

I know, I know...
At this moment I'm not sure that I'll do anything more with this, partly because I like its brevity and partly because I've another recording project in the background comprising pieces in a similar vein (some of which will definitely need "the rest..."!

Cheers

Actually...
...there's no looper on this track but it obviously lends itself to looping.

I've got a Boss guitar effects unit which has a built-in looper but I haven't explored this much yet. I might look to get something which offers a greater range of options like Loopstation (which looks wonderful...)

Thanks for listening in

YES x infinity
Sorry for that loopy title up there... but indeed I can envision myriad pieces that you could spin off of this idea. Great backing "loop", nice improv over the top, and just as you wound it down, I heard a whole band sliding in to take it up a notch, drumming, pennywhistles, bass, just kicking up the dust like crazy... hope to hear your parallel project come to fruition then!

Much enjoyed
There are some minor irregularities in your melodic playing (probably an accident resulting from your improv) that produce a rhythmic pulse that contrasts slightly with the underlying driving pulse of the assompaniment. This is not a criticism. I think it's very cool, and it is one of those nice differences between a human musician and a MIDI instrument. I don't mean to put a magnifying glass to your playing (god knows I don't play violin), but I would like to encourage you to emphasize the human elements of your playing and don't ever try to sound like a computer. This is some really good stuff, and I'd like to hear more.

The thing that scares me...
...when I create pieces like this is what happens next? Do I learn the improv to recreate it live or do I trust that'll I do something I like as much in the live context...?

I just love...
...multi-part music like this... I think it sounds cool...

Great just how it is, and I'd love to hear what you might develop from it...

You win either way, Martyn...

I wish I had
the ability to improv as well as this. Very VERY cool!! I have seen good players take advantage of the technology like loopstation and the results are nothing short of amazing. I believe you to be one of these players and would be very eager to see what you could do with one, based on this piece alone. Mostly because I have yet to se a violinist use one, only guitar players.
Peace

I'm aware of...
one or two fiddle players who use loopers. For me moving in this direction just grew out of improvising - I found my self using GB to record repeated figures and then jamming over them and it occurred to me that I could do this live with a looper. I think it will be a lot of fun when I finally get there!

Thanks for listening

Good idea, great little sketch
Of course, I'd love to hear more, but it is actually pretty cool as a teaser or a short filler. (actually reminds me of the 'outros' on public radio) Nice and melodic with a bit of a bite.

Short and sweet
I like exploring the power that can be achieved with a short piece but having said that I realise that I do need to learn how to develop ideas better.
