Snow Circus

Description
This song is kind of meaning-challenged, but I had some music and no words. I heard a scientist on the radio talking about "snow surfaces" and I thought he said "circuses". I just free-associated on that to try and get some lyrics.
My initial thought was to try for a dull, monochromatic Canadian psychedelia, but it didn't really come out psychedelic at all.

Note: I am reposting this.... I had to fix some distractingly loud crash cymbals and weird-sounding drum fills....

Lyrics
cold grey gunmetal sky
sun pale cataract eye is staring down
better get on my way
and trudge through the ice & slush of this town

oak tree stands in the park
murder telescope eye is staring down
on a branch in the dark, theres a
hawk who never gets tired of waiting around

I'm on my way to the
Snow Circus
hey everybody
come on & see.
it's a miracle play nothing moves,
everyone hides, it's beautiful
it's closed every day
it's just better that way, if I have to be truthful

I'm on my way to the
Snow Circus,
hey everybody
come on & see.

in the parking lot someone asked me
are you running from a situation
I told him that i'm just in a hurry
i got some inside information
I heard they got a
Snow Circus
Hey Everybody
come on & see.

friday night in tablature
man you have the coolest indie rock/power pop sensibility. love that solo that riffs on the melody, reminds me of pavement. the 'parking lot' break is sweet - that's the kind of thing that takes me right back to cruising around with the boys looking for some kind of trouble to get into, cranking ourselves up to it with some dramatic rock and roll. i'd pay for this stuff if it wasn't free. as it is, downloaded, with pleasure.

thanks much. the lead tone was a preset from guitar rig 4 called "nickel power"...
emulating Nickelback perhaps... I hope not :)

Another chance to listen and comment
Glad you reposted this. I heard it yesterday but was too distracted doing something else to listen closely enough to comment. I meant to come back, but I know I would have forgotten if you hadn't re-uploaded it. Good quirky americana alt-rock track with solid playing and vocals that fit the music quite well. Interesting lyrical imatery.

This has got a great vibe, I love the vocal performance and the melody. Compliments the atmosphere and bouncy guitars of the song. Very cool.

Hi Mike
I deleted the original tune very soon after posting.... there were just a couple of blatant mixing mistakes that I missed the first time around!
Glad you liked... I'm coming around to your way of thinking re: the screaming thing.

I Always
like checking out your tunes. This reminds of a cross between 60's pop and folk rock. I was gonna ask you how you got the jangly rhythm guitar tone , guitar rig? Enjoyed this.

guitar rig
Yeah, the electric rhythm guitar part is a setting called "Crunch (HB)" (I assume that means humbucker?)
Glad you liked! Your characterization of the genre seems pretty accurate... I'm a pretty major Byrds fan.

This is a terrific song
for any circumstance, but particularly for the twin blizzards we're currently enjoying in the mid-atlantic states. I love your sound in the rock arena as well as the fiddle/banjo axis--the furthest thing from dull and monochromatic. (And I would have totally been into the cowbells on the bridge, but then, I'm not the king of good taste.)

snow
it does seem that there's a lot of snow on the ground in North America right now....
The cowbell would have been alright, but I've used that trick on a couple or three tunes already, it would have felt like a crutch!
the King of Good Taste... there's a song or a band name in there somewhere...:)
"The Kings of Good Taste" LOL

What's good?
The vox, drums, guitars, the lyrics and everything. That must mean it's a great song. And it IS. Unforced and so fluid.

This may be my favorite of yours. Love it

Hey LL, thanks very much. I found it kinda hard to put the drums together (tapped it in with the keyboard this time instead of using loops), so the kind words are appreciated!

what was the name of the band...
that did " runaway train"?
your vocals are a perfect match for that guy.... i only hope you comb your hair, case it was something i think he felt got in the way of his schedule.. i liked the beach boys chorus vocals. this is a really fun song. solo was well placed and better played. great post!

vocals
Umm let's see now... Dave Pirner of Soul Asylum was it? I would need a lot of Rogaine or Propecia or something to get that much hair. Probably lethal amounts in fact.
I only wish I could get something approximating Beach Boys for background vox, but that's the kind of vibe I like....

Like Craig said..
.. it's so cool to get such cool tunes for free. I'm hearing a relaxed Posie vibe here - I guess that's the Canadian thing. Love those Matthew Sweet style guitars and the slightly off kilter drum work. The solo rocks big time - but no cow bell??? :-)
Faved. Awesome.

cowbell
maybe I should just give up and put cowbell on all the songs.
I'd prefer the drums not to be off kilter but I had a bit of trouble tapping them in on the ^*&*&'ing keyboard! :)
anyway, glad you liked!

I'd go
to the snow circus. You sell it well. And I say it all the time, but damn... when Fountains of Wayne runs out of ideas they should pay you for songs because you're on par with them. And that's big in my book. I'm also really impressed that you are as good as you are on guitar, but don't feel the need to flaunt it all the time. It keeps your rhythm work loose and fun. Great work, man.

yes, the snow circus sounds quite exciting doesn't it LOL.
I have to play a whole lot of takes to get an acceptable guitar track but I'm glad it sounds alright... thanks for the kind words... you're no slouch yrself in the pop songcraft dept.

Very XTC!
The feel of it has such a cool XTC vibe. I was thinking that until the guitar solo began. Then I started thinking THIS IS SOOOOOO XTC!!!! Which of course is an extremely cool thing.

I wasn't consciously thinking of XTC but I sure listened to a lot of their music when I was a lad.
I heard "senses working overtime" on the radio yesterday and thought... my god how does someone write a song that good?"
thanks for listening!

Just what i needed...
Kind of blur, kind of blind melon... but f*****g refreshing!!! just what i needed for this hot summer. Got to admit production could have been better for the lead guitar... but song writing was just amazing
